I don't think the displacement tool has ever really worked. I think what you see in mineshaft is just regular geometry, creating a mesh and just moving the vertices around.

That's because your other thumbnails were already rendered and in cache. Only the new stuff isn't properly rendered. If you didn't have the editor before well all your thumbnails will be bugged.
