I too will work on my section this weekend. I intend to give feedwater some new infestation of a less blocky and more importantly less snaggy nature. There are some serious clipping issues with that hive which i want to fix. Also i'm going to try and make it easier to get into the water tunnel but i'm not sure how right now but i'll figure out. Sometimes though the hive just gets right in the way when your in a rush.

The spawn point in the hole will also go but i think i'll keep the hole itself but again make it easier to get into and give it some interesting gubbins up there just to make it more interesting and a fun hidey hole

Given the nature of the infestation rather than redbuilding this one first accurately then redoing the infestation it'll be easier and less time consuming to do this part straight away, unless mendasp sasys something.

I think now would be the time to speak with a mod about stickying this thread. The nancy thread is chock full of people just bumping it or chiming in with input we've already had like five thousand times. So, maybe see if they can sticky it AND get it to load the first page every time you go to the thread. Then you could edit the first page to say (in huge red letters) "Suggestions or Ideas for ns_bast? Please read here." Granted it would only stop like five percent of the posts, but that seems worth it if there isn't too much trouble involved in doing it.

Be warned guys, and learn a lesson from Lazer's current troubles...

People's memories distort over time and they tend to remember things slightly differently from how it really was. No matter how faithfully or exactly you remake it most people will still find tiny differences and get upset over them. Just keep your chin up and keep at it because either way all the map remakers are doing an immense service to the community and even if we aren't always quick to show it we most certainly are grateful!

you should see the 3.0 servers, no CO maps what so ever yesterday, every one of them was ns_Nancy, and when it changed to another, it got voted back to Nancy.

I think refinery should have slightly more infestation than before. The lack of infestation in refinery (minus a wall or two) was one of Basts flaws in my opinion. It looked like someone had built this massive room, and then thought..hmm, would make a nice hive room, Slapped the hive entity in there and just left it.

I dont care what all you elite purists think. Bast could do with some minor altering, (and it will be altered eventually, if you want a balanced map that is....)

First, thanks to all to make a remake from this FABULOUS map.

QUOTE

QUOTE (Mendasp @ Jan 17 2004, 03:33 PM)

We are working with the 2.0 Bast as base, and well, the MS vent really needs some fixing...

A slight suggestion about that vent, there is a 'dead end' vent in engine, on the left hand side, put a vent from there to the wall which is furthest away from the CC, make it weldable too.

    Great idea.

QUOTE

I really don't see the revolving door to be a problem myself. Three points to think about:

    1) It slows down marines who would otherwise have EASY access to engine room hive.
    2) That room on the other side of that door also gives access to the whole map. Defending refinery as alien can be hard enough, but if marines have easy access to it from either entrance it'll be a pain too. Taking and locking down that room is a strat that ensures success for the marines, I've seen it all to often. You take that door out... 'rines will take it every time instead of rarely as is.
    3) Locking down that room means aliens have one vent into engine and one single route to refinery. It's a major strategic position. (Although pub comms always relocate to atmos instead... which is just silly IMO... that place is a deathtrap. Ahh the lure of money I suppose...)

Take it as you will, but that's my two (three?) cents anyway.

Anyhoo... this community continues to amaze me. First nancy... and now bast. I'm very amazed you guys are already taking the initiative to do this (instead of waiting for it to get close to the chopping block.) And looking good already, I might add. That's just cool.

The biggest problem making ns_bast not be playable, its the marine-start.
    1rst : The revolving door
    Making alien espace too difficult.
Yes, it allows a near ressource noddle, and a strat?gic-point. So what the best solution ? I thinked about a second-corridor going to the other-side of the room where there's is a BIG hole. But they can be other better solutions.

    2nd : The big elevator
    Making onos espace too difficult.
It make the server laggy, and chambers on it is a bad effect. The best solution is a non-brealeable glass, showing a slope (direction : revolving-door to engine-way corridor, neat N corridor | This will allow onos espace with BH )

    3rd : The corridor on the engine-side
This corridor allows a mass lerk-gazing. Less serious as in ns_eclipse, but more serious for skulk-rush.
The best solution is to let him as it is (about the weldable solution used is 2.0 version), but to make the way out a little far-away from actual CC

    4th : The corridors on athomespherique-side
Actual system is very good : only marine can go out using this corridor.
But if the elevator is replaced by a slope, theses corridors won't be accessible. One solution could be to make ladders, giving access only if a (weldable ?) wall is breaken...

    5th : The CC place
In most marine-places, the CC is placed in order for the comm to get out and build/defend his base.
Proposed solution : none. I think the possibilities are infinite, just think about it

Another post says that engine only gets out to maint aft. This is an other problem to think about....

Wow ! I'm in this thread since 30 minutes...

Check the CM forum. The sprite is posted there. It just got left out by accident, apparently.

What's "espace"? I've never heard that term before... alien espace, onos espace... what does this mean?

What, you mean land of dysfractionation, smoked omelletes, CYODC, and glasses of water that have mistakenly been dropped on the floor I am terribly sorry? Never heard of it.

I seem to be the only Fieari on the internet. If you see my name, it's likely me.

As for the word meaning escape... I considered that, but discounted it because I don't see how the rotating door hinders alien escape, or why aliens would want to escape through there. Generally, if aliens are attacking by that route, it's a committed attack... OCs are first placed in the Main Aft for a dug in retreat position, then gorges sneak in (hopefully with sens support) and build a foreward outpost in that small space, and aliens attack from there. It works quite well unless marines have seiges... which is a problem on EVERY map, not just bast.

I think an additional hallway to main aft would fix any problems anyone could have with the rotating door though... even if the additional hallway was ALSO a rotating door. At any rate, I'd hate to see the airlock go... that was always such an important part of the atmosphere of bast....

I like it... better. I can't put my finger on it, the lighting just seems more vibrant and less washed-out.

The ladder in engine is not needed btw. Onos get stuck on it and the height is low enough to allow gorges to jump it anyway.

Ok, I have to say it. Ive noticed most maps recently are more vivid, less "washed out", higher contrast, that sorta thing. You all should know what I mean. Bast was not this, that is what made it really nice, I think. Its a different style and by the looks of the pictures, you guys are not keeping with the original style. It does look nice, but its not what I remember of bast. Bast was very dark, lights and darks, no colorful lights as I see in the pics. Im starting to feel very bad about this project if it is not changed. Remember, its really nothing about the mappers here, its just a different style/taste, and it should be left as the original was, not the new mappers.

Time you must give it, yoda. I'd say lighting is one of the most difficult things to do because unlike the architecture they have no defaults to work with I presume. Bast did have it's share of "contrast" lighting (atmos comes to mind) and it's been a while since we've seen pics of the map because we play it so much. (I find screen shots never do a maps lighting justice.) Faith, you must have!

Edit: Just did a walk through... those red lights in MS did look unfamiliar... and they are... :o

I'm a mapper and understand all of what is going on, but geeze. I don't see how it's possible for those people to just make that one refinery hive. I couldn't stand working on one room for like a month. It just looks so insane... So much lighting tests, model tests, textures and sounds... Woo man, heartburn.

We've said for all our screenshots it's not finished yet an the lighting isn't final. We don't have relics lights.rad so we don't have his values for the map and we don't know what compile settings he used so we can't magically just get the lighting perfect first time round. Bast was in development for a long time and clearly a lot of thought has gone into it's lighting, we've had 1 week so far and a lot of the areas have just been the first pass. For instance that was drunken_monkeys first compile of the engine room so back up yoda and let us do our thang. We all love bast as much as everyone don't plan on making a remake that isn't bast at all.

Everything we do is subject to change.

As for bast having no colour it has pretty much every colour in the specrtum, greens, oranges, reds, blues, white, black, etc etc etc.

I don't know how do you remember bast yoda, but comparing in-game this remake and the original bast... I wouldn't say the original was darker...

And as MrBen said, well, the lighting is pretty hard to get it exactly like the original, you know. It has a bit more contrast on the lighting, but I think we are getting close to the original.

By the way, and as MrBen said, it's not finished. As you can see, the engine pic, for example it's still a bit dark.

With these remakes people always tends to say both things, and I mean: "Change it a bit!", "Don't touch bast or I'm going to kill you!!". You know, the pressure... And as I already said, our main goal right now is to rebuild it as closest to the original (obviously the lighting is not the same...) But for doing balance changes we are going to have to change it anyways... And I don't think people wants a hive like ref with absolutely no infestation... so we have a little bit of room for improving that kind of aspects of bast.

Repeating what MrBen said. We LOVE bast, and we don't want to take it over, or break it, or whatever, we aren't zee evil mappars stealing bast!!!. We just want to bring it back into NS.
