Ok installed steam & ns. Finally get a list of servers & the pings are appalling! With WON & ASE I get best-pings of 130-140 (56k dial-up). With Steam server browser, best pings are 1400 or worse! Completely unplayable!
In the monitor window, options to stop downloading & limit Steam connection speeds are greyed out & the connection type keeps resetting itself to DSL rather than 56k dial up.
Has anyone got Steam working with 56k? Any help greatly appreciated!
Allright Ive read all the posts, and tried everything suggested. I can boot up and run steam just fine, I can get into and play every mod, including TFC, besides NS. I can even boot up NS and get to the splash screen. Whenever I try to connect I get one of two Errors, either my Map differs from the servers, or my client.dll dosnt match the servers. Ive installed both Beta3 and Beta3.03 and been screwing with it for nearly 2 hours now, if anyone has any suggestions that dont require deleating Steam and re-installing it Im all ears. I cant give out specs because these machines are in a Cyber Cafe, suffice to say theyre Pentium 4 and can run HL and all its mods just peachy. (Btw, 2.0/2.01 still works and runs just fine)
As advised, I installed the Steam + CSv1.6 package of Steam. All went well, I currently have NS and fmod.dll in the correct directories.
Steam doesn't recognize it. At all.
The program goes about as though nothing happened - not an attempt to find a new mod, nothing to suggest that I made any difference at all. I closed Steam, checked the processes menu. Nothing.
Any help would be appreciated.

Bah I've finally figured out why NS refuses to show up in Steam.
When you try installing the older version of Steam, it will automatically ask if you would like to install it into the C:\Program Files\Steam directory.
The newer, more rescent versions asks if you would like to install it into the C:\Valve\Steam directory.
NS would automatically try to install itself into C:\Program Files\Steam (or the equivilent on your pc), with no option to change the install folder.
So basically, NS is installing itself into the wrong folder.
To get NS to show up in Steam, move your NSP folder (the folder that has all the NS stuff in it) to your actual Steam folder.
At first i was sceptical to even install steam, form what i heard of steam-cs-users. But after a while my addiction to ns took over <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Quite often when i start NS in steam i get the "this game is not available, please try again later". I figured that one out, just 'Exit and logout', connect again and voil?, now it works.
The most irritating thing is the random-freeze bug. Whenever im playing ns steam can freeze. In the readyroom, while playing, after 1 min, after 1h, on any map on any server, anytime anywhere!

Have you checked your drivers? I recently installed the latest NVIDIA drivers and they were making HL crash like crazy. I've rolled them back to previous ones since.
I was just about to dl the latest nvida drivers, thx for the warning.

Just got hold of hl2 beta and I've been quite curious bout it. Downloaded it (1gb zip on a 0,5bit connection, took almost a day) Installed it. Hardly managed to create a map, even less play it.. that beta is way from beeing a Beta. It wasn't worth the time, so i removed hl2beta...

Hey guys! um ok i have steam dl'ed and i got the NS 3.0 v1 beta or something and i dowloaded that, and then i downloaded the beta 4 patch but NS dose not work! when ever i click on it in third party games it just comes up with Newgame load game etc like HL and when i click find sever no severs come up, so i tryed to run the training but when i do it gives me a error abotu missing comander modle or something! i had steam and stuff before when the beta 4 came out i dl'ed it and when i tryed to paly on a sever my client.dll was diffrent from all the severs i went to! need some help!

Hi all. As you can see, I am a new member, but one that has been reading all whats been going on lately.
Nuf bout that. Ecthelion, read ur post today, and i can say i have had this problem too. but everything seems to be sorted out (and Win XP is a big help). I had the exact same problem when trying to connect to a server, using my mum's work computer she brought home that runs Win 98. I quickly took advantage of the situation and installed my ISDN 64kb modem thats does not work with win xp into it. Now thinking i can connect and play with a lower ping, i descovered the computer could not run NS very well. Whip out my laptop and cross-over it to the computer.
In win 98 u need ICS (internet connection sharing). I enable it, and i can view web pages and everything from my laptop. Ping the servers fine, but as soon as I try connect, timeout error. Tried every trick in the book. My final conclusion was that my win xp laptop and the win 98 computer do not like each other, and their relationship violently ended with the pull on the plug on the cross-over.
Do u run win 98 on a ICS? connecting trough a LAN with an xp computer? Or do u have a firewall program (nortan or zone alarm etc.)
I solved my probs by connecting my laptop to my proper home computer which runs xp the same way i did the other computer. Connects fine (even with my firewall).
Im lost beyond no mother friggin end. I swear, im on the end of sticking magnets to my tower. I cant figure this out. I just want to play the darn NS mod. I have NEVER been able to. I used to have an exe install, a while back, spent 10 hours downloading it, and everytime i went to install it it said not enough room, but i had like 3 gigs left. Now i have steam. Theres new ns install files. I dont care if i play ns through steam, won, or the gates of hell. I want this to stary working, and i need some help. When i finally finished downloading everything there was to do, then i double cliked on steam NS and it said something like " wrong video mode, running game on software mode " something along those lines, then when i went to play i joined a game downloaded the map then the screen is black with this in the middle in green text " Natural selection does not support software mode" HOW THE HELL DO I FIX THIS SO I CAN FINALLY PLAY NS

Cranium, you have to initialize half-life before you install ns(I.e. click on it from th MY Games list, it will initilize, then quit out, log back in and click half-life{should be highlighted}then run through the first part of the game{the tram ride} to make sure you have the proper files) Then you install ns and THen you log onto steam and initilize it! that simple buddy(lol not simple at all is it?)
I have come to the conclusion that NOBODY reads these fourms, I am obviously not going to get help and i downt know why i keep trying. Steam is just way too ahead of it's time to be of any use, WON should have stuck with us a little longer and Valve should just hurry the heck up with HL2! Once Steam becomes the next WON NS mya get enough running power to go retail! Valve your losing Big Bucks on this! If anyone can, tell me where i can contact Valve and write some sugestions for them.

you also have an open thread that I have given you directions on how to do sometihng stupid (run NS via WON, as there are 4 servers).
You also realize that WON will be shut down. developing for a platform that will literaly be destroyed is NOT smart. Developing for a platform that around 500 people use, is also not smart.

Follow step 2 and no, NS is officaly unsported on WON as it would require major tweaking to make a version that works on WON as there were segnificant changes between won and steam. With the amount of hacks that Flayra did to make NS work it only realy works on Steam or Won, no both.
2) Play HL atleast Once via Steam (just booting up the training mission will do).
3) Download these 3 files: ns_install_v3_b1.exe ns_v30_b4_patch.exe ns_v30_b4a_patch.exe
4) Install NS V3.0 Beta 1 (ns_install_v3_b1.exe) (This should auto install to steam\steamApps\your@email\half-life\nsp, if it does not, move the NSP folder there).
5) Install NS V3.0 Beta 4 (ns_v30_b4_patch.exe) (point this at steam\steamApps\your@email\Half-Life\ do NOT include the NSP).
6) Install NS V3.0 Beta 4a (ns_v30_b4a_patch.exe) (See * at bottom).
7) Search your Hard drive(s) for folders named nsp.
8) If you have more than one you messed up. Goto Step 3.
If you folow these steps properly you will not get client.dll or map.bsp errors.
If you are positive you have folowed them corectly then redownload the installer form a different location.
*There aslo seems to be a bug with, atleast some of, the 4a installers. Try pointing it at steamApps\your@email\ instead of steamApps\your@email\half-life

I'm really sorry if this has already been answered somewhere but i've gotten steam installed on winxp, gotten NS V3 installed, updated it to bV4, and now i'm trying to get it to 4a, I downloaded the ns_v30_b4a_patch, tried to run it from desktop, and got this error: C:\DOCUME~1\bob\Desktop\NS_V30~2.EXE The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:0531 IP:0141 OP:63 72 69 70 74 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. Word for word. So I decided to move it to my steamapps natural selection folder and run it there. This time I got this: ns_v30_b4a_patch.exe The NTVDM CPU has encountered yadda yadda and so on like the first time. The icon for the patch isn't a setup icon it's just a blank application window like most messed up or invalid programs are, don't know if that helps but since thats different from the other installs I figure I would say it anyway. Once again i'm sorry if this is a waste of time because it's been answered somewhere but I looked around for about an hour and a half here on the forums and on steam and didn't find anything so if you can, please help. I love natural selection and played it back on WON servers and all this steam stuff has confuzzled me so the answer may be obvious but will anyone just point it out to me? Thanks
EDIT: I think I figured it out, I re-dowloaded the b4a patch after I got steam working and ran HL through it once, and installed all previous versions of NS. This time the installer worked, it might have to do with me having steam working when I downloaded it or something messed up like that. i'm going to go try and play now, i'll be back to tell what happens, hope this helped someone

I have uninstalled Steam and Sierra hl several times, tried all the fixes I could find, and yet I cannot find any help. Could the all wise and wonderful admins of NS please post any help they may be able to offer so that I might be able to play with my clan again!!!

I have the exact same problem, and I still havent found a solution to this. I uninstalled steam about 10 times, trying whatever possible to make NS work. But as you said, the servers only respond when I search for them in the steam-server-browser, and not the ingame-server browser.
I wanna play!!!! Same thing happens to TS and all other 3rd party games.
Nuf bout that. Ecthelion, read ur post today, and i can say i have had this problem too. but everything seems to be sorted out (and Win XP is a big help). I had the exact same problem when trying to connect to a server, using my mum's work computer she brought home that runs Win 98. I quickly took advantage of the situation and installed my ISDN 64kb modem thats does not work with win xp into it. Now thinking i can connect and play with a lower ping, i descovered the computer could not run NS very well. Whip out my laptop and cross-over it to the computer.
In win 98 u need ICS (internet connection sharing). I enable it, and i can view web pages and everything from my laptop. Ping the servers fine, but as soon as I try connect, timeout error. Tried every trick in the book. My final conclusion was that my win xp laptop and the win 98 computer do not like each other, and their relationship violently ended with the pull on the plug on the cross-over.
Do u run win 98 on a ICS? connecting trough a LAN with an xp computer? Or do u have a firewall program (nortan or zone alarm etc.)
I solved my probs by connecting my laptop to my proper home computer which runs xp the same way i did the other computer. Connects fine (even with my firewall).

Ahh man, I feel so sorry for you, wait, you are a freaking genius, ho can you know so much? Are you on the Ns or Steam team or something? Anyway, if you get this, I wanted to know if you knew how to fix the Rundll.32 error. I don't know if anyone else gets it but im trying to get quick resulsts (I WANNA PLAY!). If anyone can shed some light into this concept please do, I have been cruising these fourms for hours and it getting late(I've got work in the morning).
you have to initialize half-life before you install ns(I.e. click on it from th MY Games list, it will initilize, then quit out, log back in and click half-life{should be highlighted}then run through the first part of the game{the tram ride} to make sure you have the proper files)
Then you install ns and THen you log onto steam and initilize it! that simple buddy(lol not simple at all is it?)

you also have an open thread that I have given you directions on how to do sometihng stupid (run NS via WON, as there are 4 servers).
You also realize that WON will be shut down. developing for a platform that will literaly be destroyed is NOT smart. Developing for a platform that around 500 people use, is also not smart.

i have installed counter strike w/steam that doesnt need halflife
when i try to install ns
it says "steam and third party mod required"
what does that mean???

and no, NS is officaly unsported on WON as it would require major tweaking to make a version that works on WON as there were segnificant changes between won and steam. With the amount of hacks that Flayra did to make NS work it only realy works on Steam or Won, no both.

2) Play HL atleast Once via Steam (just booting up the training mission will do).
3) Download these 3 files:
ns_install_v3_b1.exe
ns_v30_b4_patch.exe
ns_v30_b4a_patch.exe
4) Install NS V3.0 Beta 1 (ns_install_v3_b1.exe) (This should auto install to steam\steamApps\your@email\half-life\nsp, if it does not, move the NSP folder there).
5) Install NS V3.0 Beta 4 (ns_v30_b4_patch.exe) (point this at steam\steamApps\your@email\Half-Life\ do NOT include the NSP).
6) Install NS V3.0 Beta 4a (ns_v30_b4a_patch.exe) (See * at bottom).
7) Search your Hard drive(s) for folders named nsp.
8) If you have more than one you messed up. Goto Step 3.
If you folow these steps properly you will not get client.dll or map.bsp errors.
If you are positive you have folowed them corectly then redownload the installer form a different location.
*There aslo seems to be a bug with, atleast some of, the 4a installers. Try pointing it at steamApps\your@email\ instead of steamApps\your@email\half-life

EDIT: I think I figured it out, I re-dowloaded the b4a patch after I got steam working and ran HL through it once, and installed all previous versions of NS. This time the installer worked, it might have to do with me having steam working when I downloaded it or something messed up like that. i'm going to go try and play now, i'll be back to tell what happens, hope this helped someone

it comes with Steam, it is one of the offical game thingys, just double click it and it will download.
