    Everyone go email this guy and tell him he is a idiot. He has obviously never actually played a game with it. Let alone a custom mod. Lol

    Have all those fixes been added to the <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=31&t=49430&' target='_blank'>Ns V20 Steam Beta Available</a> thread ?

    A few of them have, but not all. The only one I missed in the beta was the splash screen with NS logo. All the other lag fixes seems to have been included.

    However the graphic problems haven't been fixed yet, and will be adressed in 2.1 when it's released

    Played this morning, and whatever update(s) happened since the 10/01 update has since fixed a majority of the right-click menu's glitches (still a glitch here and there, and font sizes are still off).

    I've been playing NS on steam for a few days now. I like it quite a lot: voicecomm works better, my ping is lower, and it takes less time to get into and out of games. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> The only problem I have is that my in-game menus (that are brought up by right-clicking the mouse) are blank, and what few words I can see are outside their respective slots. <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo--> Anyone know why the game is doing this, and how I can fix it?

    And bLuISh, I wouldn't call <b>anyone</b> packin' a shotgun a nerdy a$$. Even if he is wearing glasses. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Grr. A few questions about the stupid radial menus...

    I don't have one for either of aliens or frontiermen.

    My right click does sh*t. How do I rebind that so the menus appear?

    Any suggestions?

    Frustrated with this...

    I had the same problem. Just go into options in NS, in the control tab. You just have to assign 'right-click' as your in-game menu. That solved the problem for me.

    What do you see when you double-click on the Natural Selection option on the Steam game menu? I see:

    on the left:
    New game
    load game
    Options
    etc.

    You need to click on the Options button. All control and game options normally displayed in the NS screen are there.

    Hi, I've never played NS because I still can't get it to work. I've installed steam with the full (700MB+) cache, and then installed NS in c:\program files\steam\SteamApps\charlie@charliedyson.net\half-life (yes, it's in a subfolder called ns). The dll you've been talking about is there. The first time it complained about the maxdistance thing, but I created the appropriate config file to stop that. Everything seems to work okay, except that when I run a server to check my setup, and I walk through the "Join Marines" door it just freezes and the screen goes black. Sometimes I hear footsteps and then they start. Also sometimes I see an ammo reading in the bottom-left of the screen. I can't alt-tab out or get the kill program dialog box to appear using ctrl-alt-del. I've tried searching through the forums and I can't find anything like it. This is a fresh install of windows with no pre-existing c:\sierra\half-life directory. Any ideas what I should do?

    Thanks in advance,

    Charlie.

    Whenever I try to open Steam as of late, it tells me that Steam is already running. This occrus whenever I just start my computer, or if I close Steam. Anyone else have this problem, and if so what have you done about it?

    CTRL + ALT + DEL will show what applications you have running. Sounds like you have it running in the background and don't know it. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

    This was happening to me too. So I decided to run it in a virtual machine, and discovered what I already suspected was happening.

    Steam is trying to write to a null-pointer in real-mode memory space. And unlike most other windows programs, Windows isn't catching it (it would show up as a Page Fault). Lol, this is a sign of very poor programming, as apparently Steam has gone ahead and mapped all physical memory into it's virtual memory space. I used to do that to write hacks and memory snooper programs. lol

    For the layman, a null pointer basically means that for some reason or other, Steam is trying to write to the very very beginning of RAM (which is just 0x00000000 in 32-bit hex), which is reserved for the interrupt tables. The OS (Windows) is ofcourse supposed to royally disallow this, as corrupting the interrupt tables will cause the system to go into an infinite loop (aka it freezes, so no key combination known to man will get you out of it). But for some reason, the "write" to the beginning of Ram is happening, and thats when the system freezes. How ****.

    Well, that's what you get when you "Fix what ain't broke."

    Sounds logical, except that I was still able to move my mouse and the cursor changed over different bits of the screen, suggesting that something was still working. Also, since steam is 32bit/win32 (protected mode) etc, I thought such a problem would get caught. Anywhoo this is win9x which has kinda messed up memory management. If I still has a copy of Visual C++, I might be interested in trying:

    #include<iostream>

    int winmain(int argc, char** argv) { // Damn it I wish they could just use main like everybody else
    char *p = (char*)0x0;
    *p = (char)0xFF;
    return 0;
    }

I have been on the STEAM bandwagon since it was released, and done my share of researching and correcting STEAM/NS related problems. However what Viper has discovered explains a LOT of things.
    For now I'll use WON for plaing NS, and my server's reverted to WON also. I feel we're a good ways from eliminating NS as a 3rd party game in STEAM... I just want to play and have fun.

    Just like the comment about the protected-mode comment. I come from linux. As far as Im concerned, there is no "protected mode" when running Windows. Lol. As long as you know what you are doing, you can still do anything.

    Oh and btw, your program would generate a page fault, as it should. Escpecially if you use Visual C++ as the compiler. c2.exe will always generate "protected friendly" code, that will ensure nothing goes wrong (most of the time). Instead, code that in assembly, compile with NASM and depending where it's loaded in memory it would be allowed to execute. Lol

    Couldn't agree more (my point is more effective since I'm typing this comment on linux now). According to the nasm manual it can generate 16bit real mode code and win32 code that <i>should</i> run in protected mode and doesn't seem to. Anyway page faults are usually our friends (unless windows does something wierd like loading the whole program before it executes). If I could be bothered to play with nasm on windows I'd experiment, but at the moment I only use windows for Half-Life and Half-Life accessories. As far as I can see, with win9x the pseudo-contract is: you run 16bit programs, they might crash your system. You run win32 programs, they shouldn't but they will. Has anybody tried running HL on win2k/xp. Since there is supposed to be no 16bit code running around we shouldn't have this problem.

    Does installing Steam completely cut you off from playing on WON servers? If so, is there a way to work around this?
