1. Fix max ex_maxerrordistance errors and "reliable channel overflow" client crashes:
    -create userconfig.cfg in half-life\ns and add alias "ex_maxerrordistance" ""
<make sure your \ns\config.cfg file contains exec userconfig.cfg>

Did this, I think anyway ;P. Still have the problem, soon as I get in a game it lasts 5-10 seconds then reliable channel overflow error and im booted.

opened up notepad, put in -- alias "ex_maxerrordistance" "" -- Exactly like this, without (--) then saved it as userconfig.cfg in the half-life\ns directory.

=\ Config.cfg contains exec.userconfig.cfg to so I dunno whats up.

Can any one explain why that every time I play and then exit NS my desktop is a burning bright yellow, the only way I can remove this is by restarting my computer. It is very annoying and I have no reason why it chould be doing this. Does anyone have any ideas on why this is happeneing and how to resolve it?

The gamma brightness issue has been worked around here:

    http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/in...ST&f=18&t=49218

It's not perfect but it's much better than rebooting every time your gamma gets messed up..

So when NS 2.1 comes out, will it detect NS is already installed in Steam as a third party game and move it, or will it show up in the supported games and third party games at the same time?

Thanks for the help ... but I am experiencing 1 other annoying bug or something ...

Everytime a game is won on any server in NS and I go back to the waiting room the game crashes and sends me to my desktop. This happens during every game and is really starting to pee me off.

I don't understand why it is doing this and I have reas pratically all other threads and posts that are to do with crashes but none of them work.

Plz help me or I will stop playing NS for ever ... AAARGHHH !!!

PS - Here are some specs on my PC that may help :

If you are running Windows XP, then the problem is a video driver related issue.
If you are running Windows 2000, then the problem can be either the above or a issue relating to the drivers of almost any other part of your system. I recommend making sure that you've got the latest GART for your AGP bus on your board. That is the most common source of bus sync errors that cause games to freeze and crash themselves out, and most motherboard manufacturer's "All-in-one" motherboard driver installers don't include them. Pay particular attention to these most common culprits: USB Bus drivers (you wouldn't beleive the numerous amount of crashes and freezes are from these on some systems), AGP GART interfaces, Videocard drivers itself, IDE DMA bridgeing control adapters, (old versions of these can cause games to die if a "realtime" DMA-to-AGP-memory transfer is active and fails) and if you have any soundblaster cards (which are pure crap and almost nearly 80% software emulated at this point) then MAKE SURE you got the latest drivers. Soundblaster cards in themselves are responsible for an average of 5-15fps loss during games due to their "polling" software counterparts. Most people would get higher framerates with $10 PCI wonders. Yes people, soundcards DO impact your framerate.

Note: the above only applies if you had gone through the pain of redoing the full steam install and installing a fresh copy of NS. If it still does it (aka normally reproducable) then see the above.

Some time ago I heard the "reliable channel overflow" error message was directly related to the length of a server's MOTD (on STEAM). Try several servers to see if it occurs everywhere.

a new one: when i logged in to steam it started updating steam_whatever for a while. so far so good.
everything looked ok to me. then i was looking for servers, and the filter CS servers was on. i change --> "change filters" --> "game" --> pulldown menue: there is no NS??? last time i played with steam, there was as game option "NS" ??

WTH did that steam update do??? STEAM

but what can i do now to get NS as game option back? any suggestions?

perhaps i should wait until 2.1 comes up to get an steamable and playable version

try actualy launching NS (don't connect to a server)

and then look at the server list.. that should work, as it automaticly only gets NS servers, and it can't get any others when you have launched the third party game.

I'm getting a "Steam validation rejected" error every time I try and get into a game. I made the smart job of making steam the primary HL exec, or something so now I can't use All Seeing Eye, or even the normal .exe to play NS. I really tried to like Steam, but I'm not having an easy time right now...

edit: Now when I click on the games in my favorite in the steam window I will go to a loading screen to join the NS server, and I get a different validation error, but still the same jist....

I'm really hating steam right now...

They have updated Steam today (November 12, 2003) and there are a number of things there that may correct at least a few of these errors.

I have not had time to check these things out yet but at least these things seem to adress the upcoming NS Steam release:

(full change log here: http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=news )

Fixed startup crash where the text file buffer wasn't always terminated correctly causing bad info to be parsed out - Might correct some of the Steam Crashes

Fixed corrupted VGUI2 text when using the TriAPI - Might fix the Menu text being garbled

Fixed 'load failed' error causing players to timeout from server during level changes - Might correct some of the Steam Crashes

Fixed crash opening options dialog if "voice_enable 0" was in the config.cfg file - Might correct some of the Steam Crashes

Increase MAX_HUD_SPRITES from 128 to 256 - Might remedy the Commander Lag in Steam??

Note that these are my assumptions ... I have not tested this yet.

At least this tells us that Valve is acutally doing stuff to make NS a reality on Steam!

Just confirmed that the menues DOES now work in Steam. That last update did it. Steam still crashes alot though. I get the feeling that it does not crash as much anymore ... but it still crashes on map change.

The Steam NS 2.0 version works fine on my comp. but I can only see 14 servers. Are there more, or are a lot of them still on WON? Also, since I dled this version do I have to uninstall NS 2.0 to get the newer versions to work or can I just update it? Thanks in advance.

Viper... can i recomend you place a link on the first post for this NS Steam beta.

It doesn't include all the new stuff, it is 2.0, with some fixes and it helped me get Steam working a little better.

I dont think the NS team want to put the pressure of a public download of a NS 2.0 Steam client on this server ...

This link might be removed ...

Upon converting any game to steam (especially NS) does anyone else find that the mouse movements are severely changed (for the worst!). Handling the mouse feels odd after years of experience with the old HL and aiming is a skill I have to relearn now. It feels like the mouse accelerates rapidly initialy but then slows down and requires more effort to move it across the screen. The result..... aiming for that lerk on crack can be a tricky ordeal!

Why can I only see two Steam servers for NS ?

I'd love to get ASE working with Steam since filtering by country doesn't work in the Steam servers browser. CAn anyone tell me how to set up a new filter in ASE for Steam and Natural Selection.

Also, are there really only 1500 CS servers ? - 'cos that's all ASE is picking up.
