A heat shield is a tube that fits over a gun barrel, and usually has holes in it for air cooling. It's normally used to prevent silly soldiers from burning themselves on a hot machine gun barrel.
A rotary cannon switches between several barrels while it's firing, since a single barreled weapon with an RPM that high would melt.
On your weapon, the gun barrels (or perhaps what we see of them) are very short, making it unlikely someone would touch them. It's also redundant to have 2 heat-sinking systems.

Well I don't know crap about modelling or skinning, but if you need a concept, I might be able to help. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

I agree with an earlier post that the HMG, with all due respect Sid <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->, shouldn't be a minigun. Something along the lines of a heavy assault rifle. Perhaps something that has only one barrel, a unique or traditional reload method, and is held like an assault rifle.

I don't like box fed weapons, since they don't look like the thing you run into creatures to shoot it with as you do with the HMG. You more like, set up somewhere and mow down incoming aliens. Either clip fed from a banana mag to be extreme, a default HMG mag, cylinder magazine, or P-90 style.

Just some ideas and opinions <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> But I'd get that LMG finished first, lest it be washed aside in the big rants about the HMG which hasn't even been decided upon.

Kinda from way far back but I really love that upper left one <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->. Be sad to see it go. /frag realizes he is using some no-scoped lmgs... hmmmm.....

Anyway, I still like the upper left, even though it is probably to late.

Great work, this is the kind of thing we have been needing.

why do you refuse to use smoothing? these high poly models could end up looking more low poly than the low poly models then.

this is NS after all. Marines are up against the likes of skulks, fades, lerks...
all fast moving and very agile creatures. I'd like to you see swivel a box fed minigun fast enough to shoot at a leaping skulk.
It would just be too awkward.
It definitely needs to be an assault rifle of some type.

What about something like the Mecha Gun in Gunman Chronicles as HMG?
It would have to be bigger and have a clip or something. And of course a skin that fits NS.
Here are some screens I could find:

I like the idea of a HMG rotary cannon, and I like that concept pic.

    And it's very late now, but I liked lower left best <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

As for shotteh... please not an auto-shotty. Looks too much like a grenade launcher, just looks silly imho. One that's as close to the original as your LMG is to the original would be great.

I would also like to see some sort of heavy assault rifle or something instead of a rotary cannon. Rotary Cannons and Smartguns are overdone in NS IMO

Because I like making flat shaded renders of the models so people can see what they actually look like, adding smoothing distorts the look. Smoothing would be added by the time it is ingame, don't worry about it.

Ack! Yeah. I agree. Miniguns are two overdone in games now-a-days.

My Concept was exactly like the gun Palmaneen showed. It origianlly was supposed to have two roatry barrels.

why do you need animators, why can't you reuse the original animations?
  • Mr_ShoeMr_Shoe Join Date: 2003-08-10 Member: 19352Members
Sometimes it's hard to import original animations, or they stretch the hands and/or the model.

To be an HMG it would need to be one gigantic assault rifle. An AK or an M4 won't do the job. It would need to be something more like the OICW or bigger. I don't see how an assault rifle can do the job. I like Sid's idea. Having some kind of obviously futuristic and large double+ barreled gun that's not gigantic, but definitely a lot bigger than the LMG.

As far as a player modeler goes, Im taking a 3DSMAX course at Vo-Tech, and as soon as my comp is up and running there, I can work on whatever I like, just so long as i create a moving scene by the end of the year

so... I would be willing to model for your pack if you let me use the weapon models in my scene,
