The EMP is a new attack for the crab squid that disables all electronics temporarily. It is triggered by shining lights at it.

There will be a precursor base on the mountain island. In fact if you press F1 in a certain area it says the biome is 'Emporer Facility' which is the same biome used in the prison in the lava zone. -

You need to understand that fragments are spawned in wreck in based on the biome and what blueprints you already have. They are not pre-placed.

Loved it! A few small things: there wasn't much on farming or the wrecks (doesnt really matter) and I'm not sure I like the crabsnake at the end.

Good question, but it is currently unanswerable. There is nothing that talks about the past of the 'player'. I think he(/she when they add a gender selection) is probably a passenger, but thats just a guess.
