Suicide is a completely valid argument. That's all your doing when you're smoking, just breathing in nicotine and other various poisons, and, in turn, killing yourself. Also, have you ever heard of second hand smoke? I patiently wait the day that someone gets some really bad disease from second-hand smoke, then starts sueing (sp?) people over it, and calls it attempted murder.

Maybe not murder, but possibly involuntary manslaughter.

My thought process was always
'If smoke inhalation is a bad thing every other time, what makes smoking so good?'
I've never smoked and have made the decision that I will never smoke.

bah at all of you people I say.

so what if people wana smoke?

it feels good, so let em do it.

As for quitting smoking? don't rag on people who have a hard time doing so, it is NOT the easiest of things to break both a habit AND a physical addiction at the same time. Have you ever seen some one who missed their cup of coffee? how pleasent were they to be around?

As for second hand smoke?
All the bs that was being circulated about how bad second hand smoke is?

yup you guessed it, BS. It was never proven. No actual science behind any of it. gg propaganda.

so lay off, all of you. If you don't like some one smoking around you, ask em politly and most of them will either put it out or move.

If you DEMAND that they put out that FILTHY CANCER STICK! they are gona blow smoke in your face and you will deserve it

As of the beginning of this year I'm an ex-smoker, smoked for 6 years. The only time I've craved one is when there's beer around, otherwise, easy as pai.

I'll tell you one thing: Don't break down and finally start smoking because all your friends do, no matter how awesomely great said friends are. One day the friends will have moved on and out of your life (and probably to California, and Georgia, and Florida), but the smokes will still be there. Costing you too much money. Every week.

That's the spirit. Smoking costs you money and years off your lifespan. No offense, but people like you **** me off. I smoke. I Know the risks, and the costs, and to me its worth it at the moment. I understand the dislike of it, but the people who praticaly run past while I'm smoking annoy the hell out of me. Second hand smoke is a myth, espeicaly outdoors, and unless they are activly blowing it in your face if shouldn't affect you at all to just walk by normaly. Not that I think you should stop and talk to me, or anything, just don't think les, or more, of me because I smoke.

Bob is right. Its like you are lighting the money afire, and in return you get one or more of the following: cancer, yellow teeth, bad breath, etc.

If you really really feel like you want to just get rid of money, then make it goto use...send it to me.

This is the line I'm most curious to hear more about. I have one family member and multiple aquaintances who smoke, and one thing I've found in common with all of them is that their reasoning for smoking involves the addiction rate. (Either "I've been smoking for too long, I can't stop now" or "I could quit at any time, so it's not going to affect me much.")
I haven't heard a line like yours, "I understand what it is and does, and I choose to do what I do." Mind telling more about what makes it worth it to you?

It could be a personal thing. You shouldn't harangue him too much about that. I've known several people who know exactly what it does but choose to do so anyway, because they have their own reasoning. Could be stress related like I mentioned before.

My opinion:
I keep asking myself why people is smoking...
Most of them want to smoke just because the person's friends are smokers or just try to act cool while they have a cigarette on thier fingers.
And i dont know why they think they are cool with a cigarette.
"Hey! Look! Im a attention guy with a cigarette! Im killing myself now! Isnt that cool?!"
Sure, i have tried to smoke cigarette/cigarr but after some minute, im asking myself why i did it, because of the pressure or the taste..

Well, I Son't smoke a lot, about a pack a week so cost wise it ends being less than if I was to drink soft drinks, or get a coffee on the way to work.

Health wise, is a bit more complicated. I think we live too long. I have a grandfather currently slowly dieing from alzhiemers. I don't ever want that, or even to live to be 90 and more or less healthy, but to old to care for myself effectivly. With this sort of out look on life the idea of dieing from lung cancer when your 60 doesn't seem so bad.

The addiction rate does play in a bit honestly. A recent study showed that if you quit by the time your 30 there is no increase in long term health effects from smoking. I "know" I can quit "whenever" I want. I do it from time to time, when the short term effects(damn killing off cillia and the resulting phlegm build up) or the cost gets to high for my current economic situtation (I'm working a workstudy job which hours vary alot, os the amount of loose cash I have varies monthly, and my booze always comes before my cigarettes). I can leave it for a week or two, pretty much cold turkey, though i find it useful to cut down over two, three days; it reduces the cravings I have to deny and the coughing fits. And go back to it when I feel I can. I can also quit for longer periods, (like going home for the summer, my smoking and parents don't get allong so well). This helps the above opinion, by allowing me to change my mind at sometime in the future (before i'm 30-ish) and not have to worry so much about being able to quit.

And as far as what I get out of it, I like the relaxation, the calming effects, as well as the physical act of smoking. The taste isn't all that pleasent, but smoke is simply beautiful when it slowly blows off in a light breeze.

And as an aside, don't start smoking. I take resposbility for my actions, but I hate the idea that someone might read what i have to say and then get themselves hooked on it...I shouldn't be anyone's rolemodel....ever....

edit: on second hand smoke "We found no measurable effect from being exposed to secondhand smoke and an increased risk of heart disease or lung cancer in nonsmokers -- not at any time or at any level," lead researcher James Enstrom, PhD, MPH, of the UCLA School of Public Health, tells WebMD. "The only thing we did find, which was not reported in the study, is that nonsmokers who live with smokers have a increased risk of widowhood because their smoking spouses do die prematurely."
for a book about this, and other problems int eh way that medical studies are done i'd recomend reading this book: http://www.catostore.org/index.asp?fa=Prod...d=21&pid=144048

Whether or not second-hand smoke is actually harmful (I don't really care enough to do any research on the subject), it still smells horrible.

Drugs are bad, mmkay?
