-- The Freya is a prospecting ship jointly owned by Vandenburg Corp. and Eugal Mining United. Main features include:

Interstellar Class Inertial FTL drive (Definition: Capable of speeds in excess of 45c)

Sublight Inertial Pulse drive

Localized gravitational core with coils stretching throughout the ship

Small-scale mining equipment

Extensive passive and active sensor array

Crew complement:
In keeping with standard doctrine, all crew members are trained in the general operation of a spacefaring vessel. Some specialisations.

Captain: Heartline

Crew:
Renegade
Talesin (Human Medicine)
TheMuffinMan
Pulse
Sky
brute force (Port Security)
Some tall guy
Swiftspear (Propulsion)
im lost
Nemesis Zero
Freak83 (Gravitational Systems)
wonedslackystyle
Hellfire3k
Snidely
Cold NiTe
SaltzBad
Mantrid
BadKarma (Communications and Sensors)

Ship status (public): In flight. Not for sale.

"Any idea what it is?" asked Captain Heartline.
"A spaceship quite obviously, but not of a class logged in any of our databases," BadKarma responded.
"Some sort of secret project?" Some tall guy asked.
"Most likely. An unclassified ship, held secret for some reason. The design is very unusual, though. Could be alien as well," was BadKarma's response.
Cold NiTe shot him a look, and replied with a hint of disgust in his voice: "Wild speculation."
"Of course," BadKarma admitted, "but an exciting possibility, no?"
At this point, Heartline interrupted the exchange: "Possible. Whatever it is, let's have a look at it. BadKarma, tell im lost, Pulse, Hellfire3k and Snidely to suit up for extravehicular activity. I want them ready in thirty."

EVA always brought a little change into the normally uneventful flights of the Freya. While im lost, Pulse, Hellfire3k and Snidely slowly floated over to the derelict ship that the Freya had detected a few hours ago, most of the crew was on the bridge, glued to the main screen showing pictures from the external cameras. BadKarma occasionally switched camera modes - the ship appeared completely dead. No heat emissions, no electromagnetic emissions. The derelict was little more than floating pile of scrap for all they knew.

The four spacewalkers reached the ship and found an airlock. After trying to get it to open for a while, they eventually used a blowtorch to force it open. They were met with a small cloud of athmosphere rushing out, then were almost blown out of the airlock again when they repeated the procedure for the inner door. The ship had to be at least partially decompressed by now - hopefully there were no survivors anyway, or they might be killing them off because of their forceful entry.
If the outside of the ship had looked strange, the inside did even more so. The corridors they walked along seemed to have an aversion to 90 degree angles, and the monitors they occasionally passed showed information written out in wholly incomprehensible symbols. If this ship had been built by humans, they were deranged.

Suddenly, the sparse lighting disappeared, and the nearby terminal that had been spitting lines of weird symbols went dark.
"Hey, what's going on here? The lights went out. It seems as though whatever systems were running just shut down," Hellfire3k radioed back to the Freya.
"We're not registering anything unusual on our end," BadKarma replied, "Hang on for a moment..."
"Well, this is just great," said im lost, switching on his helmet flashlight. "What now?"
Pulse was just about to respond when he was interrupted by a frantic call from BadKarma: "GET OUT O--" But BadKarma didn't get to finish his message as he was interrupted by ear-piercing static. Four pairs of hands instinctively shot up to cover four pairs of ears, but hitting airtight helmets insteads. The crackle disappeared after a moment, though, replaced by eerie silence. When Snidely tried to say something, he noticed that his radio was dead.

Handsigns quickly showed that nobody else had a working radio, either. Standard procedure in case of radio out was to return to base, so they headed back. When they emerged from the mistreated airlock, they were relieved to see that whatever had happened had not affected the Freya visibly. The return flight was quiet and uneventful, and the airlock readily responded when they punched in the access code. After taking off their suits, they immediately headed for the bridge.

"What happened?" asked Pulse as soon as they entered.
"Electromagnetic Pulse," Heartline replied. "The ship itself was unaffected, but anything with external aerials or otherwise was thrown into reset. We're only just starting to get our sensors back. We didn't even know you were aboard. Apparrently that ship isn't as derelict as we thought."
Talesin, who had been bent over a console studying figures, walked over and had a few quiet words with Heartline. He nodded, and Talesin went over to the four spacewalkers and asked them to follow him to the medical quarters for a quick checkup. As they left the bridge, they heard the Captain giving out orders for everyone to check the systems for damage, then meet in the conference room in three hours.

Three hours later, everyone was sitting at the oblong table in the conference room. Heartline was just about to start the meeting when TheMuffinMan checked a readout on the terminal in the table before him, then rose to his feet. "Our escape pods just launched. Automatically. All four of them."

The crew rushed to the bridge. BadKarma was the first one at his console, with Nemesis Zero hot on his heels.
"Particle scanning?" Nemesis Zero asked.
"They're still in range, hang on." replied BadKarma.
Everyone was silent as BadKarma studied his displays. "Four humans. All dead. Identities unconfirmed... They're passing out of active sensor range!"
BadKarma put a picture of the pods on the main display, but even with heavy magnification they were mere specks. Suddenly each of the specks flashed, then disappeared.
"They exploded!" was SaltzBad's conclusion.
Nobody spoke. One by one, the realisation dawned on them. brute force was the first one to say what they all thought: "What the hell was that? How can four escape pods containing human bodies have launched from this ship? We are ALL HERE!"
"Hey, let's not panic now, all right?" Sky interjected.
Captain Heartline quickly added: "I agree. I don't know what exactly is going on here, but we'll have to figure it out. The key to that process is remaining CALM. This is no time for becoming flaky. Talesin, you should d--"
And then Heartline collapsed. Talesin rushed over, but docchimpy
reached him first. He and Talesin quickly confirmed vital signs.
"Breathing normal. He's not conscious. Let's get him to the medical quarters."

Breathing, pulse and brain activity were all normal, but despite Talesin's best attempts, Heartline did not regain consciousness.

I've said it all before, but once again: Welcome to The Werewolf Game IV: Freya.
Remember that this story does not reflect the actual game: If you base your votes on what happens in the story, you are foolish.
I will send out the PMs with your roles now. In case you are wondering: The roles were generated completely randomly. Please be patient, I have eighteen messages to send, so it might take a little while before you get yours.

I will need PMs from the formtakers, the seer and the guardian before we advance to day one.

Day one will begin on saturday, the 2nd of April, 20:00 GMT.

Good luck to everyone. You'll need more than that, though.

Pulse found Renegade and Freak83 at one of the aft sensor arrays. The cover had been cut open with a rotating saw, wires were hanging out and circuit boards were littering the floor.
"This is not standard maintenance I take?" he asked.
Freak83 and Renegade turned around. If they had a bad conscience about whatever they were doing, they were hiding it well.
"Not really," said Freak. "Have a look for yourself."
Pulse had a look at the modifications. Several circuits had been bridged, some fresh soldering work had been done on some of the boards, and the particle emitter seemed to have been turned 180 degress.
"You're retooling that thing to do something else. Isn't this something you should tell BadKarma?"
"We're making this array scan INTO the ship instead of behind it," Renegade replied. "We're also putting it on manual override. Powerful arrays like these aren't meant to aim inwards, and we'd probably become VERY ill if we fired it more than a few times. Ideally, we'll only use it once, and we don't want any accidental discharges during other scans. Still, you know what a stickler for rules and regulations BadKarma is. He'd never let us go through with this, even in our current situation. Pity though, he'd be a great help. C'est la vie, I guess."
"We'll be ready in a few hours, Pulse. We'll alert you then. This should help us a lot," Freak83 concluded.

In the medical quarters, Talesin and Mantrid were busy examining the inert figure of Captain Heartline. Everything up to and including brain activity was normal.
"He ought to be awake," Talesin said with an exasperated sigh. "I simply don't know why he doesn't wake up."
Mantrid just slowly shook his head without replying.

brute force slid his keycard through the card reader and punched a six-digit code into the keypad. Rather oddly, the code coincided with his cousin's birthday. He entered the weapons lockup and surveyed his options. His choice fell on two sidearms and an automatic rifle. A quickdraw shoulder hoster and a pouch of spare clips complemented his arsenal. He left the lockup and smashed the keypad with the butt end of the rifle. The rifle and one of the handguns went into a hideout that he had decided on a few hours earlier, while the other handgun went into the shoulder holster, where it would be well concealed as long as he wore his jacket.
"Much better," he muttered to himself.

"What part of 'we need to get outta here' don't you understand?!" wonedslackystyle was shouting at Swiftspear.
"Calm down, ok? I fully agree that it would be nice to put a few lightyears between us and that thing out there, but I already told you that there's something wrong with the FTL drive. Until I can get it fixed, we only have the sublight drive. We're already headed away from it, but if it has an FTL drive just remotely as powerful as ours, this isn't a case of 'turtle versus hare' - it's more like 'slug versus cheetah.' Now, please pass me that wrench, this access shaft won't open itself you know."
wonedslackystyle complied, surly. "This is a damn bad time for the FTL drive to crap out on us, you know that?"
"I fully agree," came Swiftspear's muffled voice from somewhere beneath the horizontal drive core, "and it would be very convenient if anyone - or anything - wanted to keep us here." Swiftspear's voice trailed off as he crawled deeper into the shaft. wonedslackystyle looked down the length of it and saw Swiftspear lying on his back, his arms entangled in a mass of wires. Most of them looked charred. wonedslackystyle shuddered. "I've always hated this access shaft. I mean, the core is designed to vent the radiation downwards and out of the ship if the shielding ever fails, but that also means that anyone who's in that tunnel at the time would get the full brunt. I don't remember what sort of radiation death is supposed to be more unpleasant, slow or quick, but I'm not keen on finding out myself, either."
Swiftspear's response this time was distorted from echoing down the shaft: "Don't remind me. I try not to think about it."

    "Freak83 ain't coming?" Pulse asked.
"No, he has scheduled maintenance for the gravitational core together with Hellfire3k and TheMuffinMan, and it would seem odd if he missed it without any explanation. We don't want to tell everyone what we're doing here. But we can make do without him, no problem." Renegade explained.
"Tell me once more what we are going to do here."
"What we are going to do is that we are going to scan the entire ship for lifeforms above one kilogram of mass. That should rule out even the largest of bugs. At the same time, we will have them all analysed to check if they're human. Basically, we want to see if we have any infiltrators here. The incident with the escape pods and Heartline's subsequent collapse was pretty suspicious." said Renegade as he finished the last changes to the sensor array. "There. We'd better get out of here now. Don't want to be too close when it goes off."
"And what if someone happens by when it does?"
"Here? In the aft section of the ship, with the mining equipment? Nobody comes here when we're in flight. Don't worry."

Renegade and Pulse checked the results of the scan from a safe distance. In the first microseconds, there was an unexpectedly large obstruction of particle flow, but the array compensated automatically, and soon it started recording data. It showed eighteen living humans, and a nineteenth, unstable return. At first they assumed that this would belong to Captain Heartline, but then they remembered that he exhibited all standard vital signs - the scan wouldn't be able to tell the difference between him and a real, living human.
When they returned to the array, it became painfully obvious who the nineteenth, unstable return had been: Tied to the array with strong nylon cords, they found Freak83. His death had certainly been quick, but his distorted features made it clear that it had been far from painless.

Freak... Thats a shame. We lost a great player, here. Would of loved to play with you.
He has not finished a game yet lol.
Don't understand whythe guardian would not guard him, but your death will not go unadvenged freak.

Great story so far. Very well written.

As far as freaks death is concerned, i cannot think of any information that would allow us to narrow the search for the wolves. Freak was not very active in the channel, so it is possible that it was just a random attack. I do not believe this, however. Freak is probably the most experienced player in the game and it was a logical choice by the wolves to get rid of him. The only thing that we know for certain is that the wolves are smart. They did not pick a target at random, instead they took out someone who was probably our most experienced player.

No hard feelings about the vote im_lost, we all have to vote for someone. I think that i will refrain from voting for a little while. I have nothing else to go on and i want to cast an educated vote, rather than a random one.

Exactly. He was also not very active in the channel, so it leaves no possible ties to any of the wolves.

    IRC = Internet Relay Chat.

Basicly its the nerd method of chatrooming that allows us to avoid AOL morons and people PMing us with ASL requests every 30 seconds. It also has the benifit of being highly standardized, meaning many different clients can log onto it, and its feature base is EXTREAMLY customizable to each individual user. I'm not going to really be able to help you get started, as I basicly just fudged around with stuff until I had things figured out. But basicly you are going to want to get an IRC client (google MIRC or hydraIRC) read some of the explination documents, and start yourself a user profile.

You are going to want to join #NS-TWG (type into one of the open bars /join #NS-TWG <password here>) if you have more questions after that just ask one of the people hanging out in there, and we will try to help you as much as we can.

On the other side of it though, like you said, he was quiet in the channel, and he was a wolf last game, the wolfs might have benifited from having him around to draw suspicion on himself...

I don't know, this is all theory craft at this point. I suspect they just killed him off because he has a dangerous ammount of game experiance. Although I don't think it's really fair to say the gaurdian dropped the ball... If I were the gaurdian I would be concerned that freak would be just as dangerous a wolf as the wolfs were concerned that he would be as a human.

We'd do good not to start overinterpreting our current information base, it being exactly nil. At this point, the wolves are just as likely to consist of inexperienced players just fooling around as of experts following a well-defined plan. In so far, I'm going to hold off on any votes until some information has surfaced. As far as I understand this game, we'll have to operate on sheer luck for the first two to three days; let's just hope that it won't hit too many wrong ones until we got our bearings.

So far I haven't heard anything at all from a few players, Psyke Docchimpy and STG, I'd love it if you would drop your 2 cents in... Just to prod your ribs a little I'm going to place a vote for Psyke, but I'll be very clear on this, unless you incriminate yourself horribly my vote will most likely change, I just want you to speak up a little.

Someone mentioned over IRC the idea that the first person killed in the game should become a wolf instead of just dying (I'm at work right now, so I can't check). I realized that if the guardian is lucky and protects the right person on the first night, the wolves are at a huge disadvantage. This has nothing to do with this particular game, I just wanted to mention it before I forget.

I'm just going to place my vote in now, so that I don't forget:

    docchimpy.

It's completely random. No hard feelings; feel free to vote for me in return.

Just curious, is anyone (Nem0 or Talesin) planning on regularly updating the topic description to say which day/night it is? It would be helpful, especially for outsiders observing the game.

Ouch, one of the most experienced players, gone like that. Not good.

No, but this is forums is new with twg, so I just figured that normally the most strong player would die on the first night. This is due to because I doubt many wolves in this forum would go for a total nub on the first night. Unless they want us to believe they are dumb. Anyways, Just figured the guardian would know this, for first night.... Kind of suprising that freak did not get guarded. He was been wolfed first night 3 times this would be the fourth already....

Guys lets try to stray away from the bandwagoning this round since it only hurts us (humans). Also try not make to many random votes its hurts us just as more.
People need to try to think it out instead of just going random.
Random is only good if time is running out and you have no evidence or suspicions on anyone. So my vote goes to
Snidely because I think we need to stray away from randoms. This vote will get changed very quickly if something comes up but for now it holds here.
No hard feelings, just hate random votes

It's always going to be random on the first day. I'm not going to do this every day, just until I get a feeling as to whether someone's guilty or not.
