What's In An Alias?

<div class="IPBDescription">How did you get your game or forum name?</div>I go by x5 in game or whenever I am online. (sometimes less-than-three-character prejudice forces me to add something in front of it)
"x5" (pronounced as the letter 'x' and the number '5'; NOT 'times five' or something like that) has become an alias because of the following factors:<ul><li>My lucky number is five (and favorite color is red, just fyi)</li><li>Back almost a decade ago now when I first played TFC (not long after it's initial release; remember the ol' WON network anybody?), I would play engineer and demoman often. I loved to see that sweet line of multi-kills (usu. from the sentry gun, EMP grenades, remote-detonation pipebombs, or MIRV grenades) I sometimes got in the upper righthand corner. It was a kind of an anti-thesis of those long-winded stupid clan tag symbols by being a short two-character symbol of death. *shrug*</li><li>It's also short for an Xzianthian special forces agent codename. They are all 'x' with some number after it, much like how the mythical James Bond is a '00' agent. (ie. x5 is analogous to 007; a very short identifier)</li></ul>
After I made my iconoclastic spray...
<img src="http://www.xzianthia.net/images/x5.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" />
...it just kind of stayed, like a nickname. One other people start knowing you by that alias, then keeping it allows others to recognize you by it (for better or worse).

When i was 9 (hahaha) I was playing Age Of Empires and Combat Flight Simulator online with an Italian clan. Watching south park at the time, i was in need for a character. Seeing Cartman on screen made me become his.. idol in a sence. He was just the funniest cartoon character next to Peter Griffin. Thats how i got my name
Cartman to be.
I also play sometimes under the name 'Vredesbyrd', which is a song title from my favourite band 'Dimmu Borgir'. I guess you could call it my smurf name.
though this will hopefuly only be mooved to OT and not locks ville <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Thansal. (Than - sal, not, not sal like the name, softer)
my original online SN, needed a nick to The Realm (old MMO by Sierra), and at the time was was obsesed with the Dragon Lance series. One of the main chars is Tanis. I sorta worked from there untill I had a name I liked.
I also use:
Thragnar (barbarian style)
Thael (my mage/theif)
and Than/Thans (this is the natural shortening of my name anyway).
So yes, if you see Thansal, Thragnar, or Thael anywhere. It IS me (yes, I am the one and only <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->)
when i started NS, i was The_Neophyte (google neophyte and guess how i decided it <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> )
my clan (before it died <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> ) had a member called DISS|Troyed who was a combination of strange and silly.
i changed my name to NEO|Phyte in a semi-parody of his name, and it stuck
Ive also gone under Intution. due to the fact I occasionaly get intuitive feelings as to were skulks are. And sometimes i run around as Empty, because I didn't feel like putting anything in under player name.

Don't worry, I'm not the sort of thing that locks someone like this. In a way this is like the Post your Pic thread, made to help community members learn a little about each other.
<span style='color:orange'>*Phased*</span> from General to Off-Topic.
Yeah! You guys said my rock thread would be locked and (except for one silly person) we all kept the spam down and it's now a cool topic.
Same goes with this one, or the Post your Pic thread.
It's cool to learn about the other people in the community.

So Marik_Steele, where does that alias come from?
I used to go by "Fah-Q" which I took from the movie Dazed and Confused. Ben Affleck plays a supersenior school bully who paddles all the little freshmen mercilessly and his paddle has "Fah Q" written across it. I also used "The Soul Pole" occasionally. That was off another character's paddle. If you haven't seen the movie, go rent it pronto, it rules.
So Marik_Steele, where does that alias come from?<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Hey, you're right, I never did get around to explaining it. I'll copy-paste parts of the last PM conversations I had with people about it:
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--><!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->You know
I've always wondered what that was...and just right now at this exact moment I have figured it out.
It's from Tie Fighter and the expansion pack with the missle boat thingy.
That's like the higest rank of the Secret Order and that name is from the story line in the book isn't it?
hahah
I'm happy..that game kicked royal ******. lol
<!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Yes, it kicked royal ****** every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The name is actually a misspelling -- the original is Maarek Stele. The official Prima strategy guide did a decent job of trying to promote the plot even further, but what I really want is to get a copy of "The Stele Chronicles," a book that came with my original floppy disk version. I let a friend borrow it and it's since never been found.
If you can find anyone who is selling one in good condition, let me know Immediately with a capital "I." Doesn't have to be mint/collector condition, I just don't want pages that are ripped, torn, stained, or close to falling off the staples/binding.
The cover looks like this: <img src='http://starwars.cside.ne.jp/gif2/tf-sc.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image' /><!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
So yes, my near-unrecognizable avatar and name come from the same source. I earned the tattoo I have now as my avatar, and I did so by becoming one hell of a TIE pilot about 5 to 7 years before I earned my driver's license.<!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
My offer to buy The Stele Chronicles still stands.
[edit]Picture attatched, just in case the original host goes down and it can no longer be seen above.
[edit2]I'm stickying this. I think it's more important than the now-inactive xFire Friends list. /me does some fiddling around
@NEOphyte: Damn, the clan died? you guys were so much fun to play NS with <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Originally, it was _-Crono-_, then I got into a CS clan called 5788, and I've stayed friends with the leader after the clan crumbled with a peak roster number of two (non inclusive).
Changed to Chrono along the lines because of the people telling me I spelled Chrono wrong, after all, the game was named Chrono Trigger, why would the main guy be spelled differently?
>_>
I prefer Lonesoldier. This is my username everywhere but NS.org. I was playing Halo when some spider landed on my keyboard and I wildly jabbed the buttons, OMG LAG!. Sry about that, my IE just lagged..........
Halo -> Spartan -> Master Chief John-117 is the last survivor -> Alone -> Is a soldier -> Lonesoldier.
I started using Hero911! because I like the show Reno911!, so I figured that fit. Then I realized that was **** too.
So, then, I changed my name to tex, because I live in Texas, and tex is just all around badass. Plus, its 3 letters, and I needed a new name because no one knew me, and as Pain_User pointed out to me, change your name, people will wonder who the hell you are, and it worked.
Before that, I used 'Chryon', which I got from changing some letters in the word 'Crayon' <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Sometimes I use sin545 and it's sort of a short of my e-mail adress.
I've used '1' or 'One' a few times, and this comes from my time at publicstructure, if anyone remembers..
And lately, in games where you create characters and stuff.. like mmo's, I've come to use the name 'Corbus' which I made up when I played Mu Online. It's sort of.. how to explain..? Hotdog in swedish is 'korv', and I sort of got it from that. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
The first one I ever had was the_reaper84.. (Hey, I was like.. twelve!)
Wish I had a more meaningful/mysterious/cool/interesting alias with lots of cool background, like so many others seem to have.. Oh well, can't have everything..
Maybe I should use <i>Chrinistorbus One, The Reaper</i>? With the background of all my previous aliases. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
and if you ever see 6john6doe6, it is me. or someone trying to be me.
if they are not me, then i shall hunt them down and slit their throats then throw them in a river.
oh and when i cant use 6john6doe6 due to reasons like names cant start with numbers or have numbers i use aegri somnia or aegri.somnia or aegri_somnia or whatever. tis latin for troubled dreams.
So we worked on a name, and we came out with Vampires of Doom, My friend is not the leader type of guy more of the materialistic guy, so he let me do the leading while he gets around with armors, weapon and such. So I had to have a new fitting name... So I was a Vampire, and I was the Master of that clan... VampMaster ... As simple as that.
The clan lived through Diablo I, then went to Starcraft where we had 100++ members and we were backstabbing like mad in comp stomp games, after a bit of time, it was impossible for ANY of the members to join a game with the Tag on <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->...
Well that's the story of my name <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->.
Now think of the name that is the complete opposite of that.
That's what I did, at least.
that should be your new name bob.
im so unleet it took me like 5 minutes to do this
If only I could fit that into a normal name block, I'd have my brain sucked out through a bendy straw and change to that.
by the time HL came out, I had decided the name was too trite, and didn't know what to change it to. setting myself up for multiplayer, I picked the HL zombie model, and gave his outfit nice loud leisure suit colors... and named myself DiscoZombie. It just stuck from there. not a very creative background but it worked.
gecko: kinda off topic but your sig and avatar ftw, EVO is still one of my favorite and most remembered games ever... it's one of the few SNES games I can actually bring myself to play through again every few months because it's so clever and addictive... the only travesty is that if you discover the secret to evolving to a human, the human sucks compared to a normal tank-like mammal (which coincidentally generally sucks compared to a bird)...
I chose bloodlust (it was my xbox live name, I was #65 on the top 100 for Mech assualt for a while untill my account was canceled my my ***** mom) If you look at my first post here, you'll see references to both of those names.
Anyway, I was banned for spamming for a while and needed my NS forums, I registered a new name, Gimpy Doodly Doo, I used that for about 6 months, got sick of it. I PM'd some Forum Admin o other to un-ban me (Marik banned me <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> for a couple of weeks, turned into about 6 months) I wanted my old account back (Fluffybnny, now Caboose). After a while, that's when I got sick of people asking me a/s/l so I pm'd Nem0 and he changed my name to Caboose. This was in the hayday iof RvB, and I chose the greatest most intelligent character that there was.
Yay.
D'oh, I'm sorry! I think I remember one member who had something like that happen to him/her...but I'm pretty sure I'm not thinking of your case, as I wasn't the one told to write the apology letter.
Either way, I guess I can say sorry now, and I can say thanks for not totally cursing me out about it via PM <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> Get a nice friendly bear hug from a family member and pretend it's from me.
After a few bans from people who said that i was referring to somthing sick, i changed games (CS to S&I) and chose a name that sounded more like a bodygard, Mr. Maxwell (I was a huge Gundam Wing freak back in the early 90s). after a while, i started noticing that i would jump onto people from random vents and club them to death before they knew i was there, they'd scream "OMG! Headcrab!" whilst waiting for spawning. after a while, i had matured enough to realize that Mr. Maxwell was a gimpy name, so i changed it to what everyone was calling me in the server: Headcrab, Mr. Headcrab was born!
/me scurries back into his vent
Random Military Rank.
Random Botname from SturmBot.
Bad choices.
Anyway, here is the only place I'm PVT. Coleman... I'm Hicks, if possible, or Cpl. Hicks... how original I am... <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Also occasionally use the alias Rorschach... because he's such a cool character... or 21 April 1910 10:04 PM ... coolness points if you know what happened then...
...supR extra bonus points if you know why it would be relevant to me... <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
