Funny Achieves are cool, but in general I feel like Achievements should be used to encourage good behavior, aka show you things that you are suppose to be doing.
Like in L4D, there were ones for giving away pills, and healing team mates, b/c thats sort of non-standard behavior for an FPS that they were trying to encourage.
Having achieves that are simply counting stats makes them sort of pointless IMO.
But that's just my 2 cents.
**edit** whops looks like a whole lot of other people said roughly the same thing, guess I should have read more of the thread first.

I completely disagree with anything that suggests there is a 'correct' way to play. If I want to play onos as a vent crawling stealth class, I'll do so!
I do agree with the sentiment that achievements need to be carefully thought out so as to not encourage absurd or abusive game-play. Like achievements that say require a marine to solo kill a hive, or aliens to die to turrets hundreds of times.
[Marine Achievements] Tis only a flesh wound! - Kill any alien with less than 10% health. Thought I smelled something - Kill an alien without seeing it. How'd I get to be so good? - Kill 15 aliens in a single match.
Agreed with some sentiments here, make the achievements a variety of things that you can achieve through positive game play. A mix of "cause X damage with the shotgun", "kill X lifeforms with a pistol" that will take a good few hours of gameplay to achieve along with some more interesting ones like "kill three marines in a single life where each marine is killed within 5 seconds of a leap" or "be involved in the destruction of at least three hives in a single match".
But, while welding achievements...perhaps welding X amount of other player's armour...would be useful, stupid ones like killing X skulks with a welder would not!

No, that's not a good idea. It's good for you to think of ways to help those who aren't as good, but since everyone is encouraged to get all achievements, you're encouraging people to play badly to get them.

Lerks no longer have bite.
for my achievement.
Chopping Down Your Own Forest: Achieve 30 Team Kills with the 2sec Axe
Shotgun Rush: Be the first player to get a shotgun and die.
Or
If everyone in the game gets a shotgun, (not counting the commanders), and it's relatively close to the start of the game, then YAY everyone wins the "shotgun rush" award for having taken part in a shotgun rush!
==============
We're gonna need to consider a Flamethrower Rush award as well >:D
==============
Where's my damn gas mask!: Die in alien gas.
Where's my damn batteries!: Die in the dark with special-edition non-working splinter-cell nvgs :P
Ninja: Build a phase gate near a hive without being seen.
Location Location Location: See 25 people die, without dieing your self.
Carter Burke: Run away from your team, while they get killed, without fireing a shot.
Suicide Bomber: Kill an enemy, with the same explosive that killed you.
Achmed: Kill your self with explosives., without harming any enemies.
Noob Com: Get ejected from the CC 5 minutes into the game.
Damn Clanners!: Die to 5 differant members of the same clan, in the same round.
Ventilation Tactics: As a com, get your team to build a CC + IP in a vent.
Ventilation Specialist: Kill at least 10 enemies, while sitting in a vent. Or spend 99% of the round in a vent. (Lerks are gonna be pros at this one)
Relocation Specialist: Build atleast 8 CC's and atleast 8 ips before the round ends.
Candy Ass: Get killed by a skulk, biting your ass, atleast 10 times in one game.
Sniper Pistols!: Use a pistol to kill at least the same number of enemies as their are bullets in 1 standard pistol magazine. I.e. if the magazine holds 15 bullets, then you need to kill atleast 15 enemies with a pistol.
Seat Warmer: Within 5 minutes from the start of the game, you must be sitting in a CC, and you must never ever leave it for the entire round.
Base Monkey: NEVER EVER EVVEERRR LEAVE MARINE START!! (it's ok to die and respawn in marine start however).
That Tickles: Get ejected from a CC because a skulk destroyed a CC by chewing it.
Eminent Domain: Demolish 25 alien structures in a round.
Those are great examples of achievements that should never be in the game, FocusedWolf.
Next time you might want to preface them with the statement that they're intentionally bad ideas, though. Some people might think you're actually serious.
"Green Eggs and Spam" - kill two eggs with grenades in less than 10 seconds "Egg on your face" - kill an enemy less than five seconds after gestating "Bringing home the bacon" - as commander, use beacon just after a hive is killed
hungry hungry hippo" devour 25 marines, "hugry hippo's logo" "tower who-re" build 50 OC's in one game ;-P "TD" as a logo
"close call" kill 10 skulks during leap in a row, "Phew" or a logo of a skulk leaping at a marine "rage quit" kill 25 marines as skulk in a row using bite/leap :-) "ALT+F4" as a logo
Achievement Pacifist: Don't earn an achievement this round. Home run: Hit a leaping skulk with your axe. Egg salad: Fry an evolving Kharaa on infestation with your flamethrower. Know your enemy: Kill an onos from behind, to render his boneplate protection useless. Navigator: After spawning, open your mini-map and team up with team members nearby.

Achievements that:
-reward behavior that promotes teamwork and productivity during a match (Disciplined soldier/drone: Complete a commander's request 5 times. Not achievements that:
-require unproductive actions to unlock at the detriment of the entire team (go an entire match without killing anything, do not be killed during an entire match, etc.) - Basically stuff that would encourage players to work against the team -provide an incentive for players to be inflexible ("Sorry I can't build that / change to that class / use that weapon because I am trying to unlock this achievement") -unlock gameplay benefits (I think achievements should be 100% optional and just be for fun)

Seconded wholeheartedly. We don't want to open the doors to grief from the start. I especially like the idea of getting recognition for actually following orders, helping the team, etc. although I suppose that could be hard to determine.

Whether it be the ones already suggested or just:
Kill 6 marines in a single life - Hovers without flapping - Icon would be of a scorpion, just hovering there.... Without flapping.
But, while welding achievements...perhaps welding X amount of other player's armour...would be useful, stupid ones like killing X skulks with a welder would not!

Make Ridley proudPlay 50 hours of Khara (Ridley is the director of the movie Alien) ICON-Shows all forms of the Khara in a group.
Eggs over easyKill a Khara that is morphing into Fade or Onos ICON-Egg exploding
Res ###### Accumulate over 10,000 Res in total ICON-A res node.

Not retarded - Release a game that doesn't have an achievement system.

EDIT: Grammar
"Egg on your face" - kill an enemy less than five seconds after gestating
"Bringing home the bacon" - as commander, use beacon just after a hive is killed
Marine achievement: Get Some! for killing a numbered amount of Kharaa with minigun.
"tower who-re" build 50 OC's in one game ;-P "TD" as a logo
"close call" kill 10 skulks during leap in a row, "Phew" or a logo of a skulk leaping at a marine
"rage quit" kill 25 marines as skulk in a row using bite/leap :-) "ALT+F4" as a logo
Drop down from the roof as a skulk and kill a marine before you touch the ground. Maybe 10 or so times ?
