As it said already, they already have ideas for achievements, so it is going in with all the obvious ones already thought of like "Do x so many times" ones.

<b>Bite Me!</b> : As a skulk destroy the commanders chair with your bite attack in an online multi-player game.

<b>Skulk Rush! kekeke</b> : With your entire team as skulks destroy the marine base.

<b>Oh Noooooos!</b> - As a marine do 50% of the damage to an onos with any weapon.

<b>Reporting in!</b> - As a marine follow your commanders orders for the first time.

That's all I can think of for now (sorry if the names have already been used I've not read through the entire thread).

Just a few. I tried to go for single-life achievements, you know, ones that reward exceptional feats and can come about in regular play.

    <b>Marine achievements.</b>

<b>Splat</b> - Use the exoskeleton's punch to knock a skulk into an environmental hazard. Icon of the exoskeleton's gauntlet.

<b>This is my rifle</b> - Smack a leaping skulk with your rifle's melee attack. Icon of a hammer braining a skulk.

<b>I hate Ayn Rand</b> - Place an armory then hop out of the chair to build it yourself. Icon of Atlas holding the Earth.

<b>Kill Stealer</b> - Kill a fade with a single shotgun blast. Icon of two marines arguing.

<b>Last Man Standing</b> - Kill an alien when you're the last marine left alive. Icon of a marine alone in a field of aliens.

    <b>Alien Achievements</b>

<b>Bob vs. Goliath</b> - As a skulk, kill a marine wearing an exoskeleton. Icon of a skulk standing on a dead marine.

<b>Can't Buy Success</b> - As an onos, kill a marine carrying over 50 res of equipment before he can score a kill. Icon of an onos carrying a cloth sack with a $ on it.

<b>Stubborn Saboteur</b> - As a skulk, destroy two marine resource towers on the same node twice in one life. Icon of a skulk standing on a res node.

Heavy train - be in proximity of at least (5) other exos for (5) minutes while killing (20) aliens. Numbers aren't thought through ;)

It's a bad idea to have achievements that penalize people that just bought the game late. For players that like getting 100% completion, there will always be that one they will never be able to unlock because they didn't pre-order.

I prefer and agree with others that achievements shouldn't promote playing the game differently in an infavorable way. I feel they should be for team feats or accumulated to show what you've done over time, not solo feats with strict criteria.

    Not Achievements such as:
Kill an onos devouring a teammate with a knife
    Win as a Marine/Alien 10 times
Kill 4 aliens in a single grenade launcher shot
Kill 3 aliens in a single LMG clip
Kill 2 aliens in a single shotgun shot
Use every weapon in a single game
Win on X map by doing Y

    Achievements such as:
(Aint out of the woods yet)
    Kill x onos devouring teammates
    (Distinguished Marine etc)
Win as Marines/Aliens x times without switching teams
    (LMG/GL/Shotgun expert etc)
Accumulate x alien kills with the Grenade Launcher
Accumulate x alien kills with the LMG
Accumulate x alien kills with the Shotgun
    (Master of arms)
    Achieve all weapon related achievements
    (Hero of <map>)
Win on X map Y amount of times in a row without changing teams or leaving a match

I believe Achievements to be accumulated over time that aren't too restrictive will promote better behavior rather than seeing the game as "achievement windows" because a certain situation means an achievement might be gained.

Just sharing ideas, I realise most of my suggestions are accumulated over time and sound very similar, and it isn't the strongest argument but I don't believe NS2 will feel right if people are saying "hey let me kill this I need the achievement".

How about something like this for marine:

Solidarity - Get X amount of kills/waypoints while within X meters of 2 squad members.

So we shouldn't get special for pre-ordering? So, no black armor or alpha? I see nothing wrong with getting rewards for adopting early.

In the end NS2 is a individual game. Show me one game with achievements that doesn't reward players for individual accomplishments.

We aren't talking about the armor or the alpha, I don't even understand why you are mentioning them. We're talking about achievements, which are to be meant for the final release of the game.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->I see nothing wrong with getting rewards for adopting early.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Umm... we already are. Either you opt for the pre-order standard edition and get a discount and access to the beta, or you go for the Special Edition and get black armor, access to the alpha/beta and eternal gratitude. I think it might be okay for new players to have fully unlockable achievements, I know their money will be forever tainted because they chose not to pre-order, but let's throw them a bone.

Imagine you are a gamer that has noticed NS2 on Steam and are interested. You purchase the game and look at the achievement list (remember, the list made for the release), and there is one on the list that can only be unlocked by playing the Alpha. As I said, it doesn't make sense to penalize and antagonize new players who simply happen to buy the game later than us.

Just because other games do it doesn't mean NS2 has to follow in their footsteps. It's an individual accomplishment to get a certain amount of kills with a gun over time, it's just not for doing strict criteria that'll only be there at certain moments.

Team Fortress 2 has strict criteria achievements but keep in mind Team Fortress 2 is fast-paced and whilst it may have Team in the name, it has nowhere near as much emphasis as NS2 has on the term, at least as a marine. On the alien side these sort of achievements make far more sense, but there are still resources that may be wasted as a result.

Yeah agreed, like my 'rebirth' sort of achievement too.

Otherwise there will just be stupid 'achievement servers' which are boring; the rewards should come naturally by just playing the game in the right spriit.

Flayra, I would be happy if you and your team stayed away from simple achievements such as "kill one marine" or "Command for the first time"
Anyone can get them and they are just meaningless clutter.

    Anyway, a suggestion;

    <b>Economist</b>
Drop x res nodes as a Gorge in one round. (Assuming Gorges still drop them)

    <b>Stay Away!</b>
Deal a total of X damage with Lerk spores in one round.

    <b>Impatient</b>
Lead your team to victory within only 5 minutes as a Marine or Alien commander. (5 might be too little)

    <b>I Need No Evolution</b>
Top the scoreboard using only Skulk for a whole round that is at least X minutes long.

    <b>Stalker</b>
Parasite X marines in one round. (Don't add a "Parasite x marines without dying", this might make players avoid attacking just to get the achievement)

    <b>Boom!</b>
Kill 5 Kharaa with a single grenade. (Normal grenade or grenade launcher)

    <b>Base Destroyer</b>
Deal a total of X damage on Hives or Command Chairs. (Kill 3 hives type of achievements are stupid, it only encourages fragstealing.)

    <b>Fine, I'll do it</b>
Enter the command chair after 2 minutes of round start if no one else has entered it yet. (Would need a minimum player cap)

    <b>Healer</b>
As a Gorge, heal x amount of HP in one round. (Buildings included)

    <!--quoteo(post=1779799:date=Jul 16 2010, 09:01 PM:name=abYsss)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (abYsss @ Jul 16 2010, 09:01 PM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=1779799"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Ok here is my suggestion:

    "<b><u>The one that makes the difference</u></b>." :

"<b>Kill an Onos with the last bullet/shell remaining in your magazine.</b>" (doesn't count for grenades etc.)<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Ha, I like that one.

Could be called "Scalloped" or "Egg Foo Young" with an icon of a marine boot stepping on an egg: Kill an onos while it is in egg form gestating an upgrade.

Imagine an onos running around wreaking havoc and low on health when the resources for an upgrade suddenly become available. He hides in what he thinks is a safe spot to gestate the upgrade, feeling a bit confident after his recent killing spree and not minding that he's low on health, when suddenly a surprised but enterprising marine spots him and fires a quick clip that finishes off the remaining health resulting in the death of the onos while in egg form. Ding!

It would probably be one of the more elusive achievements, but a lot of fun (for the marine, at least).

Just skimming through all the proposed achievements should tell you why achievements in NS are a bad idea. It's hard to find a single one that won't lead to grief, people doing silly things, distortion of the natural game flow, or simply people making farm servers that would render any achievement meaningless. And those are made by people who supposedly know how NS works.
