No wonder why I can't seem to start it.

The editor has updated, although unfortunately you can't get to it via Steam. It's located right in your NS2 directory though.

The editor and everything is there, but with missing sounds and apparent texture problems, I am not going to work on mapping and things at this moment.

NEVER MIND! Natural Selection is updating as I type this!

Well, it's worse than it was. Now my frame rate drops when firing.

woah. way laggier than engine test.
radeon hd5870 - getting 1-3 fps on alot of sections of the test range maps. Used to get atleast 50-60fps on previous engine test
some sections however seem alot smoother and get up to 80fps

Also, is the server browser really working? still cant see any available servers. would have thought thered be atleast a few after the release/update

I just tried out the alt+tab and it works, albeit a little slowly, but it is printing errors in the console:

    Main.PlaySoundsound/ns2.fev/common(button_enter) Couldn't load event.
SoundEventProject::CreateEvent(common_button_enter): Error loading file. (make sure event's Mode is 3D)

    edit-
I just tried it out and the performance is indeed broken. On the level where the gorge reveal was recorded, the top of the stairs is totally smooth but if you walk down half way or move past just the top the frame rate plummets.

Natural Selection 2 is using PhysX. Why did you decide to go this route for a physics engine? What does this mean for people (like me) who are anti-nvidia? Do you suspect that ATI-only gamers like myself will see any noticeable difference and do the drivers that shut down PhysX on non-NVidia cards even affect us at all?

No need to be so melodramatic. PhysX works fine on any system - it just defaults to software simulations on machines that it does not have a hardware acceleration part vis. PhysX Acceleration Card, Nvidia GFX 8800+. But some games only do certain eye candy physics stuff if you have that! Which is quite right, Mirrors Edge, Batman etc have some nice cloth effects - but thats all it is really. The important game play physics aspects still work fine and I see no reason why it would be any different in NS2. They do not currently have any crazy physics stuff that would need to be hardware accelerated, and nothing that they have released so far suggests that they would.

As to those drivers - they just prevent hardware acceleration from working, not PhysX entirely.

Please add esc to the menus to get out of them faster! PLEASEEEEEEE! BTW WTG on the steam milestone I'm sure it was a huge step :)

Well, there are still some missing textures in the editor.

I am not experiencing much in terms of lag or graphic issues at the moment. That is with the new update from steam.

If you are having issues, this is a pre-alpha release, even with the best systems, they cannot account for everything. Mine is a 1 1/2 year old budget gaming rig. Running slow, but playable for mapping and things.

That's awesome! Can't wait to see what the alpha looks like, just a matter of time now...

Great job UWE! Everything is updated and loads up fine. I am also having substantial framerate issues. I was pleasantly surprised that the lowest FPS I saw in either level of the initial engine test was about 40, now in Range one it dips down to 9 and hangs for a second then goes back up to fluctuating between 25 and 60. Range 2 is better, with much more fluid performance and fewer hiccups (I see >60 fps most times).

You're complaining that you're experiencing lag.

    In an engine test.

...The game isn't even in alpha yet. Cool your jets a bit.

Well let me start by saying congrats for getting out on Steam - and thank you as well, I can't wait until NS2 comes out.
About my attempts at playing: The game crashed the first three times I tried to play it, each time it was after I had created a server. After a couple restarts I was able to move and look around - however verts were assaulting my vision in most directions. There would be places I could stand where the floor would look almost correct, but turning the camera or attempting to move again would cause more random verts going everywhere. Pressing 'escape' to bring up the menu while on a map would work for me, but the menu was blurry as though it were out of focus. On this fourth attempt W and S both would move me forward, and I'm not sure what A and D would do because I couldn't see very well due to the verts. After restarting my computer again, WASD was working properly but the vert problem is still there.

I'm not sure if this information is what you're looking for, but my comp is:
Intel Pentium ® D CPU 3.20 GHz, 2 GB of RAM, with a Nvidia GeForce 7800 GT, and running Windows XP - its also around 5 years old. I know, pathetic.

Thank you guys again for continuing to work on Natural Selection 2 and getting it out to us : ).

I've been patiently biding my time and waiting till you guys put up the preorder up on steam. The second you guys do I'm grabbing it right away. Is there any time frame for when you guys expect this will happen?

So yeah, still some issues (oh gawds the FPS lags like crap now). At least fullscreen doesn't black out anymore.

New issues I posted in the Get Satisfaction is all of my text went... blotched. Screenshot posted in problem report.
    http://getsatisfaction.com/unknownworlds/topics/broken_fonts

Also, it appears some aren't getting sound? Not something I had....

Had the same problem with text as spellman23. Changing my visual settings to medium or ridiculously awful fixes my random vert problem.

Congrats on this milestone. I'm always happy to hear about the progress you guys make. I can't wait to get into mapping again.

So far I can only do some over breaks at work, my main PC's Mother Board is dead (hopefully not the CPU) and this stupid machine won't boot the engine. I can play in a nearly empty room with few textures and no lights in the editor. Thanks to my Athlon XP 2.2 G (yep socket A era) and its NV6200 card. A7N8x-E Deluxe was a kickass board.... many years ago. But.. it can play NS1 at 80 FPS :)

To all those looking for the editor, navigate to your Steam\Steamapps\common folder, there you'll find NS2 then ALT+Drag the Launchpad.exe file to your desktop: it will create a shortcut.

Fun fact. Took 2 minutes after I was done with the download and started the Engine (well tried PC didnt want to) that a friend msg me : Is NS2 out?

Edit/update: I edited the options settings from options.xml and was able to load the menu :)

It's been sent off to Valve and they are very fast about it so I imagine it will update within the next few hours.

Also, performance improvements are on the way!

I was a bit worried there! I was looking through my steam, and couldn't find the updates. Opened the original editor, and everything was still pretty laggy.

Good thing I saw this post!

    Grats on the big day!

My testing story: Downloaded in about a half hour, started it up. Took a pretty long while, opening music was playing for about 1 minute before the main menu screen poppedup, saw the skulk running and the flying robot hit the camera. No games in the server browser, so i created my own. Took the usual time to start up. Had good frames (40-50) which only dipped when i started firing (would lock up for about .2 seconds), but when i was full auto it didnt happen again. Console was printing this error when i would hit a dummy target with a bullet (tried head/chest/arm/arm/leg/leg) for the first time (and the target "dies"):

SoundEventProject:: CreateEvent(marine/common/health): Error loading file. (make sure event's Mode is 3D)
im guessing the search for the file was what was causing the dip in framerate

Nvidia Geforce 8800gtx, Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz , windows 7 ultimate 32bit, 4gb ram, 2 monitors, had flash game on other monitor running, while windows media player had a movie on pause behind the game in windowed mode.

    Anyways, woot woot!

Holy BLEEP! you guys just blew my mind with that little cordless screwdriver in range1. . . . just .. damn! This is so unbelievably pretty!

I had that Sound Loop and keybinding bug http://getsatisfaction.com/unknownworlds/t...nd_key_bind_bug

There's a little overlap issue near one of the wall decorations (entity?)

Whoops, looks like it happens to all the walls. The gun barrel sticks through. Which I guess it used to do in NS1, but everything looks so awesome in NS2 that it stands out as a bug to me :)

And I've got the framerate drop on firing.

    Wow guys. Seriously just wow.

I'm also experiencing the crazy slowdowns, a pretty fast machine, but getting 2-3 FPS in parts.

Oddly enough, I could stand in one place, and look around in any direction at high FPS, and then take one step forward, and everything was crazy slow, then step back, and everything was fine. It was even super slow in wireframe mode.

    Why? Steam sucks!!

QUOTE

Thank you for pre-ordering Natural Selection 2! Your support has made a huge
difference for our company and has allowed us to stay independent.

Well if you need Steam to play NS2 it is not independent. ;)

But I don't care, I will install everything on my machine you guys make me to. I can't wait and please keep working this hard. Every Friday (here Saturday) is like Christmas for me! :)

Sure it is. Steam is an incredible platform for distributing indie games. In fact, it's the best, unless you know of a better option...?

I just started a new update for ns2 on steam. Anyone know what was in the update, can't seem to find anything in the update history.
