I hope the trend towards making the game easier to pick up does not come at the expense of a lowered skill ceiling.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I think you're assuming that the increase in size was to make it easier to shoot. Firstly, NS1 skulks aren't hard to shoot, even for newbies, unless they're leaping or bunnyhopping or both. From what they've said I assumed the size increase was to indicate the change in role to primary attacker. (Should I say change in role? He's really always been the primary attacker.) Remember that this comes with increased HP/armor and hive 1 leap, which doesn't really make skulks an easier target. Or rather, they're easier to target but harder to kill... I imagine they might even be on a par with a basic marine (which would really be a shame IMO since it removes a lot of the asymmetry from NS1).

wow, that looks fantastic. but it seems to me, that the skullk is much too big. could change the gameplay (skullks can not hide; marines hit them too easy, ...). i hope u will consider this demur.
    greetz!

If they're not touched up why are the high-res ones a different colour to the zoomed smaller shots?

    Offtopic:
    Your imagination?
They're exactly the same colour, just for the sake of backing up any claim I don't know for sure I compared them in Photoshop.
It's just your eyes tricking you with the size and that the smaller images have more black space beside them.

I was not expecting much for today, I honestly expected something like, "Ns's 7th birthday wooh!". I am pleasantly surprised, and makes me feel cheap for being one of the 500 or so people who got the 20 dollar pre-order... In my defense, I've been slowly losing money for the past couple months; down to $11.25... Canadian!
Kudos for all the work, and hopefully the map maker will come before Dec 1st.

god i hope it doesnt have crosshairs. i actually am serious :P
i love it when you can turn off crosshairs in most games, as it makes it just a little more immersive,

i admit, its waaaay more fun when you have an option to line it up with the iron sights, like metal gear or call of duty (i think...:) so hopefully if they dont have a crosshair, they will have an ironsight alternative, or at least the option to have to crosshair. and these screens look so cool without one, if they DO make it mandatory, it better look freaking sweet!
i understand that the marines have like some sort o holographic esque future eye helper dbz display, so if there is a crosshair, it will still be immersive, but it better look sweet, and not something pasted on the front of my screen!

oh, and yes, about the skulk size, i did like overwhelming marines with fast respawns and endless waves of skulks clogging their rivers with our dead. (zerging, as it were ;P)
helps the whole alien infestation feel.

Incredible, I certainly have no regrets about pre-ordering.

Cannot wait to play this amazing looking game.

Worried about the largeness of the skulks but I guess we will have to see. Also please go with iron sights, they are really cool and fun to use.

Thanks for giving me something to look forward to, love you guys!!

Woah, looks nice and badass. Especially the fade in the background about to blink in and reap souls. The size of the skulks is kinda good I think makes them alot more intimidating compared to the little doggies they were before. Now they are like rhodesian ridgebacks. Does this mean the gorgie is gunna be a baby hippo.

I am also impressed with the interview I read quoting some preorder figures, ~220k has this changed the way you guys looked at things. Because it seemed after the preview around the time of the preorder site coming up, everything went abit quiet as like "oh snap we have bulk moneys lets do this, and this and that?".

    In short, Looking awesome!

Oh snap it is a lork.

Not a big issue, but it would be pretty sweet :)<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Yeah, we've talked about that. The screens are playing flash files that are mapped on, and tied into the game code. It would be cool to have those on all the 3p weapon models, but I think that if you have a lot of these on screen at the same time it can be a problem for performance, so it's probably not going to be worth it.

The panel in the right is REALLY flat, and all other details like this.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

The vent texture has a normal map, which is being used for much of the smaller details. Some parts are still fairly flat, like that panel, and some of the normal mapping can still look flat at certain angles without the light hitting it in a way to really make it stand out.

    Cory,

Will there be any major graphical additions and layers for those who have the ability to play at maximum settings?

    Improved Dynamic Lighting/Texturing, etc

My biggest question is will it scale to 2560x1600? :D Gotta get all my 'absurd number of pixel' goodness.

I loathe iron sights. Please please please don't implement those suckers into NS2, all it does is slow down gameplay.

And now that I'm on the critique path, that machine gun looks a <i>little</i> big. And I can only imagine it will be even bigger once it has a few addons equipped (grenade launcher...).

However, for being early alpha screenshots from such a small team, this game looks incredible. Great work so far that I hope we will continue to see from UWE!

In NS2 we have nanites that can triangulates your guns trajectory and then travel at tachyon speed to relay the information to your hud in an easy to read marker of the projected kill zone of your current weapon orientation. There, we have crosshairs :P

    Looking great.

I'm still not used to the huge MG and Alien models, but I guess it's a rather natural reaction after watching the old models for a few hundred hours each. The dramatic cramped hallway might make them look slightly bigger than they actually are in comparsion to NS1. Anyway, great stuff.

Finally, a Natural Selection not bound by the constraints of the HL1 engine.

I did my part and pre-ordered the high end package. These shots make me glad I did, especially since I know I have a system that can run it.

I'm mostly concerned with wall-walking for skulks on all that complex map geometry. Yes, you could build a smart wall-walking algorithm, but will it be obvious to the user where it'll work and where it won't? (For example, in NS1, it's fairly obvious what path you could take along a ceiling and wall.) How much grab do you have to have and how will that affect running off corners?

I didn't think I'd be this impressed with the screenshots, but it's made me incredibly excited. I'm looking forward to more. Thanks for doing something for the fans on this anniversary.

It didn't jump to me the first time, but it looks like a featherless chicken with extraordinary big wings to me. But before getting all judgemental, we should wait for the actual Lerk reveal, for the Lerk has poor lighting in that shot.

Simply amazing...No words can describe the transformation...

Love the update, I agree with a previous poster about your honesty on the game release...which makes us all not get our hopes up and down constantly.

Screens look amazing, and I can't wait to see this stuff in Real Time...
