This looks interesting... firing up and trying out DF myself..
One question (even though this is not the right place to ask)... how in the world do you determine if there's a magma pipe in the map? So far my guess and hope is ending up with 0 evidence of magma.

This IS the right place to ask.
If a magma pipe/pool is open, then it can be seen on the region map, when embarking. Just look at the world map for the big and evil red Vs. Those are vulcanos and by definition there is bound to be an visible magma pipe somewhere.

So I thought I was going to be able to DF tomorrow, but last minute real-life intervened. I don't know if you guys want to give anytime 2 years or postpone till we can get another good run in, but I'm not sure when I'll be able to go at it again.
If no one ABSOLUTELY wants to play/finish I can put it out of it's misery. Something I don't comprehend? I'll just push random keys until something happens. Might even try to post a story.

What difference will that make? They won't try to sneak in and get chopped into two gobbos by a large serrated disc, but will instead run around attacking random dorfs?
It makes them send sieges instead of baby snatchers. So we get like 6 sieges a year. But we'd have to make a new fortress for a raws change to take effect, I believe, so we might as well just choose a more challenging location?
oh I've dealt with aquifers before. Massive pumping that defies the laws of thermodynamics. Of course, getting the materials to make the pumps wasn't fun.

You could also do a no farming society... Just breed cats and hunt and stuff. Survive without the plump helmets! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Especially if they're two levels deep and without a magma pipe...
I suggest we just find a nice area that's swarming with undead.
