<div class="IPBDescription">The DF NS Community Fortress.</div>Edit: Newsflash because I am to bored to defend my point of view and I want lots of people to help this fort succeed you can now use any tileset you want for screens. Be sure, though to use the init file provided in this thread and that your tileset does not include any game changing mods.

Welcome to Red Rum!
Here we do believe in freedom of thought and of course delicious red rum.
If you dont know what this thread is about you should read:

and

So what we are doing is playing Dwarf Fortress and we take turns. Everyone is allowed to play a whole year, which lasts from spring to spring.
If you want to play you can sign up in this thread, but please read the rules before applying.
Ok, let me lay down the rules for this community fort:
-Everyone who know the basics of DF can play.
-We play to survive and one day to become mountainhome. If you lack the motivation, dont apply.
-Editing of files or the use of tools and cheat engines is forbidden, as is save scumming!
-To allow people to follow the stories more easily I suggest we use <a href="http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/User:Plac1d" target="_blank">Plac1ds</a> tileset, because it enhances the games graphics drastically, making it easier to follow but at the same time keeps the original DF feeling rather well, as opposed to the 16x16 square packs.
-You can however use any tileset you want.
-As already mentioned we take turns in controlling the dwarves fates. A turn lasts from spring to spring of the next year and you have to finish in 3 days at most. This is to ensure that the fort is progressing.
-If you apply as leader you will be put next on the list. However there can be no more than 5 people on the list. This is to ensure that people actually have time when their turn comes up.
-In order for us to enjoy the forts progress you are not only the leader, but also the storyteller. Make some snappy engravings (screenshots) and write down what has happened during your 1 year lead also remember to upload that savegame so that the next in line can play.
-You are aloud to rename 1 dwarf after yourself and give him the profession "retired ruler"
-You are not allowed to change the professions/jobs of a retired ruler (except your own avater, of course) and you cannot draft them into an "on duty" squad. They can however by put in an off duty squad for training purpose.
-A retired ruler has to be treated with respect!
-When the yearly autosave happens its over, no matter what. Even if you are just one lousy stone from completing your grand monument. its over. Zip that save and load it up.
-And finally do not be an asshat. If you feel like abandoning or killing the whole fort on purpose dont even ask to play, you will just be wasting your time, cause we will pretend your rulership has never happened and revert to an old save.
Technical stuff:
Taking screenshots of windows mad easy: Make sure that DF is active. (when you hack on the keyboard df reacts) Then hold ALT and press PRINT on the keyboard. Now open paint and insert.
We are playing the version 38.c
To make sure that everyone has the same init settings please use the following DF:

Comments
Edit: Skeletal carp are okay with me. I'm getting kinda bored with the zombie Rhesus Mecacs I'm playing with anyway. And I agree with sand, water, magma. that should be enough to make any fortress interesting.
Fort death: It's possible that the fort gets killed off unintentionally. Since our focus is on survival, I propose that the player responsible rolls back to when he started playing and tries again. Potentially several times, if he's particularly inept (or has been given a particularly poor fort to work with, or is particularly unlucky) until he either manages to survive for a year or his three-day tenure is over.
If the current leader can't complete his tenure successfully within the allotted three days, we simply skip him. What if this happens several time in a row due to repeated fort death? Do we declare the fort lost, or do we roll back even further?
For those (like me) who are not particularly keen on alternate tilesets (what, I have to learn ANOTHER one?), we should be able to simply switch to the other tileset for taking screenshots. I'd prefer screenshots in the default tileset though, easier for me to read. Maybe we should take a vote to make sure I'm the only one? Voice your opinions on this topic so we can see whether there's broad consensus or disagreement.
Which degree of ineptness do we tolerate? If an outpost leader deems that the previous outpost leader has made a complete mess of things that he argues is only explainable through massive incompetence or actual malice (which anyone could verify by comparing the latest save with the previous one), do we vote on whether we should roll back? Or will even a single surviving dwarf surrounded by twenty goblin archers be deemed an acceptable starting point for the next leader?

If this is like the BoatMurdered thread then Fort death is part of the circle of life. It becomes the grass and the gazelles eat the grass, then the dwarves eat the gazelles, then the skeletal carp eat the dwarves. The rollback is to prevent things like complete flooding of the fort with magma or water or whatever. If the death comes naturally so be it.

Probably depends on how good of a story is told. If the fort is thriving one year and near dead the next then you've got some 'splainin' to do. However, it does happen legitimately.
Cool.
Sign me up.
I propose that whenever a new ruler takes over they name a dwarf after themselves, in true boatmurdered tradition. This way we get the added fun of seeing how well our retired rulers go on to do, or how horribly they die.
Bearrr in mind that I just really started playing, and I haven't made it to having nobles yet. I think that is a well indication of my level ?
Also, it might be a good idea to pick your ruler from among the springtime immigrants. It'll lead to small continuity errors (how can you administrate the fortress if you're not even there yet?), but less than if old, well-established dwarves suddenly disappear. Otherwise, pick a lesser known dwarf. Don't go picking the legendary mason whose exploits fill the journals of earlier rulers, you attention-whoring egomaniac.
Furthermore, a barebones minimum of experience should be required. It's quite fine that you're no master at the game. You'll learn a lot watching what others do, what works and what doesn't. But you should know the basics of the game. If you can make a fort survive for a year or so, that should be enough. Even if you're pretty poor at the game, your screwups will elicit amusing banter from future rulers. But we don't want the fortress to starve to death because one ruler accidentally deconstructs all fields and doesn't understand how that's a problem, or how to create new ones.
Boatmurdered used the standard tileset. You can use any you like. It would be nice however, if the screens were made using the suggested tileset, so that purists and maydaysits can both read them <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
As a matter of fact, I am only really worried about constantly changing screenshot sizes, that would results if people used tilesets that are not 640x300.
Meh, If you can dig up 3 people that would join in, if using the standard 640x300 for screens would be allowed I will simply allow it. It would mean mixed screens in the story thread, but that would not be that bad, considering that the tiles are very close to each other and most importantly that they are the same size.
I have a dream that one day this forum will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all tilesets are created equal."
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of the Natural Selection forums the sons of former graphical tileset users, and the sons of former vanilla tileset users will be able to sit down together at their computer screens.
I have a dream that one day even the Off Topic forum, a forum sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day post on a forum where they will not be judged by the quality of their ASCII graphics, but by the extent of their fortress building abilities.
I have a dream today!
Lazy.
There you go.
Its the same, as in the provided packed and ready dl.
GHAA. I hate you all and your stupid dreams.
Maybe thats just me or the bionade talking. (Heh you could never market a product with that name over in the US. Just imagine the sock at the airport: OMG, he has got a BIONADE and its a liquid argghh, shoot him pisch pisch pisch)
Ok so we do this the friendly way: You can use any tileset you want, be it for screens or to play the game.
BUT I WANT NOONE TO LATER COMPLAIN THAT THE STORY THREAD STRETCHES HIS BROWSER WINDOW CAUSE OF THE BIG SCREENS!
I have to this day used the default tileset, and just started using Faskalias suggestion. I don't like the one he suggested, because I can't tell the dwarfs apart. I don't like the Mayday one either as it is too much of a change. I haven't really looked into it, but its a wee bit cartoony to my taste. I think the suggested tileset would be nice, if I could tell dwarfs apart easily by color, as with the default ones. ( or something similarly easy)
(tired, haven't checked spelling and contextual consistency)
Thus said: What really bugged me, was that I forgot the select the sand containing biodome on embark and so it was put on the other side of the map from my prefered starting point. But as already mentioned: No tools and no save scumming. So I had to bite it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
Anyway: I also have no clue, if we have adamantine, a chasm, underground river/lake or any other site feature for that matter. There could even be another magma pipe somewhere. So Digging could lead to interesting results.
--Scythe--
Is boatmurdered really using the standard? I thought it was Malkavians or something, what with the bearded dwarves instead of ordinary smileyfaces.

Nha, dont shut it, please.
You actually made me wonder and I checked the boarmurdered screens again.
Most of them are using the default graphics. A few however have changed their tileset to the alternative tileset, which came with the DF rar, which has bearded dwarves.
At least thats the conclusion I came to.
Please.
PLEASE. Let me edit your posts and correct blatantly stupid spelling and grammatical mistakes. It's really quite pathetic.

Oh no you don't.
Nex9 is from Australia as well. And I simply don't trust that prison English!
Btw: Lollyunscene starts his report with: ""To Whom it my Concern,"
Edit: it's bazillion, not bajillion
Edit2:
Regarding year 2:
Good writing, lolly. I really enjoyed it. Also: Anvils are produced at the metalsmith. So even if we managed to get steel items to melt, we wouldn't be able to make an anvil from there.
Edit3: And to make things worse: I am starting to doubt, that the skybridge will work <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
