I do? I forgot the part where the game loads up and says "Ryan loses. GG.".

You're missing a lot of what lolfighter is saying.. Normal games you can guess they will fall in to the stereotype, some do, some don't. You can be certain and then it changes or you get proven right or wrong. The beauty of most games is you just don't know for sure until you finish. Where as a prequel... you know the ending has to end in a certain way to set up the two games you already played. And that it seems, is the fail part. It's a beginning, a middle... no end.

Thaldarin, would you say it's pointless playing DE1 if you know which ending DE2 follows on from? Or infact any time you know plot details of a sequel of any type of media?

Based on lolfighters statements, for lolfighter who enjoys stories. It would probably be very unenjoyable.

I'd say it's pointless playing DE1 anyway, because I hated it. (queue, trollery, flaming, hatrid for having a different personal opinion)

Find me five games that don't follow that story.

Honestly the best example I can think of that doesn't is lord of the rings, and that is only the case because it's really damn long and you can't tell where the different parts are, but it still has the beginning and end parts follow the pattern, the middle just goes on for so long that it doesn't have any clear low point.

Because they'e console ports, almost every game designed to run on a console uses that dialogue approach, generally because it works.

So there's a new video out. You may remember the live action one in the theme of an advert from Serif Industries, the new one proports to be from an anti-augmentation group.

They're doing a good job with these videos. It's not just marketing, they're setting the scene and tone for the game.

The only place I could find the video was on viddler, and I refuse to link to that abomination of a video site.

I bought DE1 in the sale, and honestly I prefer 2.

It's basically 1 with less uselss stuff and better shooting.

In one all the guns suck and I've so far found one biomod, by this time in 2 I was shooting everyone in the head and killing robots with my EMP lightsaber and throwing tables at people. Also i could actually see in 2 whereas 1 takes place almost entirely in pitch black.

I'd probably like it if it was 10 years ago and I hadn't been playing much more streamlined games since then, but honestly, stuff like the complete lack of autosave, the bad controls, the excess of mechanics most of which are useless, the fact that your supply of equipment is even more limited than in DE2, it all just makes the game feel like it's trying to stop you having fun.

I want to be a super ninja gunslinger damnit, I want to kill people with swords and shoot them in the face and sneak around through the ceiling, except all I can actually do is watch where someone goes, sit next to their route for 10 seconds, then shoot at their face until one of the bullets hits it, then go hide in a bathroom stall until everyone forgets I exist, and repeat ad nauseum.

From the looks of it, DE3 is keeping the more streamlined approach, but adding in useful modern features like 'get close to a guy and press x to kill him' and other things that are more elegant than 'sneak up to him and hit him half a dozen times with a stick to kill him'

As well as presumably taking the augmentation element away from being just stat buffs.

I think it's not supposed to be played as a game where you race for the completion of storyline with all the means possible. It's more about discovering the world and ways to interact with the gameplay and storyline. Surely headshot & hide is one way of playing the game, but I don't think the game is particularly meant to be consumed that way.
    ---

Just out of interest, what do you people think of Deus Ex 2 storyline and how it handled the story of Deus Ex 1 with multiple possible endings and such?

For me the thing didn't work particularly well. It was really weird playing a game that often had the same characters as the original, but then again the character didn't feel the same at all. To some extend you can explain it through the changes in the general human society and such, but as far as I can tell, the game never really bothered to build a proper bridge between the original and sequel characters.

Some thoughts with spoilers from DX1 and 2:

What happened to Nicolette DuClare? In DX1 she seemed to be tied into things mostly by her family history. In DX2 she's suddenly somehow a huge character in the whole conspiracy thingy. She feels like a whole different person without practically any good explanation. It seems they just took some of the DX1 character and pasted it into a totally different character as a fan service or something.

The idea of building DX2 around all potential DX1 endings felt like a mess. Obviously there isn't a smooth way to handle it all, but it still kind of plays down the importance of your decisions in DX1 and further makes the world seem like an unfamiliar place. With a bit less hectic storyline and better world design it might have worked, but now it felt I was rushed through the world I'm somehow supposed to understand and know while nothing still seems to make much sense.

Seen the "purity first" trailer a few weeks back when the Sarif industries viral website was "hacked" by the pro human group.

I really like things like that, it almost sucks you in even before you've played the game.

Actually both the live action trailers are really well done and surprisingly high budget.

Less than a week to go (for us uk folk anyway) until we find out if its all worth it.

So how 'bout that news story about how Gamestop opened all the Human Revolution boxes and removed the OnLive coupons, and then when they were confronted about it, they removed the game from shelves entirely? I guess they thought they didn't have enough bad press already. Sure, having a "competitor"'s coupon inside the box is not ideal, but you know what's worse? Looking horrible to your customers while simultaneously sending the message that you're weak and terrified of the threat of online distribution. OnLive sucks anyway - sure, it's convenient, but it just doesn't feel the same playing games with those few milliseconds of lag and worse graphical settings to accommodate streaming, and being completely reliant on a flawless internet connection. Who would buy a game and then play it on OnLive instead of installing it anyway?

Looks like there's an option for it and mouse accel in the registry.

QUOTE ("HOW TO TURN OFF MOUSE ACCELERATION IN DX:HR")

1. Navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Eidos\Deus Ex: HR"

    2. change the value of g_debugFreeLookSpeedScalingRatio_Pitch from 6e 00 00 00 to 00 00 00 00

    3. change the value of g_debugFreeLookSpeedScalingRatio_Yaw from 86 00 00 00 to 00 00 00 00

    4. re-adjust your mouse speed in game, no acceleration

Similarly, under the subfolder "Graphics" there's a key 'Fullscreen' set to 1, so try that one?

Yeah I know about that, however that thing is fake, setting it to 0 does nothing. Also when you set it to 0 and start the game, it get's reset to 1 instantly, I do believe the register or the game is trolling!
