I happen to have a mayor that really likes the rose gold. He demanded a rose gold chest and keeps mandating rose gold items, then he forbids the export of rose gold items.

So I finally found the time to learn to play this game. Its my second fort, and its winter. We have plenty of food, but have just run out of booze. I'm confident that this will not end well.

By some miracle, all my dwarves have survived to spring, boozeless.

Drink is a necessity, booze strictly speaking isn't. Your dwarves just work slower without booze.

Well um... I had a fairly significant disaster in my fort today. The cave river flooded and caught one of my fisherdwarves unawares. I think it must've swept him into a nearby lava channel because he then proceeded to run about my fort, trailing a huge cloud of smoke, wreathed in flames.

He bled to death on the outskirts of the main part of my fort. Sad story should've stopped there.

    Or so you'd think.

I notice a few cases of dwarven spontaneous combustion. I'd lost four dwarves before I began to take notice. My broker was running around on fire, happy as larry, storing an owned item. I checked his clothing and it was all on fire. He died not long later of a total failure of hands, fingers, feet, toes, ears, eyes, mouth, nose and <b>brain</b>. He was a noble, my broker, so no real loss.

    But then... disaster struck.

Kullet Kollibash has cancelled job: Detail stone. Too injured.

KULLET GODDAMNED KOLLIBASH!!! Day one dwarf, ultra-mighty, super-agile, legendary dwarf and all-round good guy. He's responsible for 90% of the engravings in my fort, and 99% of the legendary ones. He is among the hoopiest froods you'll ever meet.

And then he died. From fire.

    This got me ANGRY.

After much vicious hunting around I discovered something slightly disquieting. The dwarves had taken it upon themselves to build a pyre.

    Of flaming dwarves.

    In their dining hall.

    --Scythe--

    P.S. I savescummed.

Good to know, though I'm still surprised I didn't lose anyone since my well project isn't finished and the nearest river is quite a ways outside the fort. Would have figured something would have killed one of them.

    I was bored.

I have just installed it - and a graphic set so I can actually see what's going on (except there is no easy guide at what stuff means in this tileset, so.. it might backfire horribly.

World has just been generated - in the second attempt, the first time my mom's PC couldn't handle the sheer awesomeness and Dorftress stopped responding (or it was the antivirus going all 'OMG WTH IS THIS'). Edit: >_< it failed when saving, it also did this on the fourth attempt. Sod this, going to get a premade map. :X

Edit2: aha! on the fourth attempt it managed to save before it stopped responding. Now it begins :O

Edit3: ...but then it stopped responding when I had chosen a location to embark to. Great.

What the hell have you done? Downloaded an ultra-old version or sommat? I've never seen such cra######ude. I advice you to keep going until you get a valid world and embark properly, it's well worth it.

It's the newest version to my knowledge, I'm running it from a USB stick though, trying to see if it will run better from the HD - I think it might also be this idiotic antivirus stuff that's all OHSNAPTHECOMPUTERISBEINGUSEDFOSOMETHINGBETTERBLOCKIT - I just closed the complaints from it, instead of actually allowing it - partly due me being unable to first see what it was it was complaining about and then allow it - all I saw was a box to tick for the program, but nowhere to tell it that it was okay - the only alternative I can think of is just tell it that it's okay without looking at what the hell it is..

Anyway, I managed to embark just before I posted this, but I was all baffled at what the hell was going on - partly from it seeming that it wasn't the location I had chosen (okay I guess they have to EMBARK there) - anyway, they just stood around, and I couldn't find any way of making them do anything.

    I art dorftress nub.

Well, yes.. the very first time I tried I was all ':O', now I pretty much went with where it pointed at the beginning, built a couple of buildings to get the hang of that(outside, as I'm completely and utterly insane), also I mined into a mountain that was some distance away - often finding it designating digging areas that I haven't designated.. Is there any way to cancel a designation?

I'm slowly beginning to get the hang of this.

    D -> X

Specify corners just like other kinds of designations, except this one removes all previous designations.

Aye, I found it during this game I have going atm.

Also... How I mine for ore? I've mined into some chalk place this time, built some workshops and whatnot. I guess you can use chalk as a kind of stone for masonry - anyway, what do I specifically use for such stuff? the boulders lying around after having mined out something? And metal? what names do the various metals have? I've noticed some red stuff in some mountains nearby (though I use a nondefault tileset, so it might not be the same as on your installation)

Edit: noticed some stuff called Kaolite or something, I suppose that this is a kind of metal. No anvil yet though, so not really anything I can use it for I suppose.

I abandoned my old fort due to.. um.. <i>complications</i> with the well project. I started a new fort, finally figured out how channels work but not before losing a dwarf to the well project. Managed to get a trade depot built <i>and</i> accessible in time for the elven caravan, which is when I noticed that I forgot to give my broker novice appraiser skill. I tried to piece together a deal using values gathered from the wiki, but to no avail. Ended up trading a stone mechanism for some worthless food just for the sake of good relations. I made an attempt at underground farming, but flooded my underground farm too well (7/7) and had to dig aditional space to get the water down to a level where hopefully it will evaporate. Made it through till spring and got my first load of 10+ immigrants. Thankfully none of them were nobles (are nobles ever part of the first wave?) since I don't have my special noble rooms with mysterious floodgate built yet.

Got my first Dwarf in a Strange Mood today, with my first load of immigrants. ###### went strange before he even got to the damn fort. And of course hes a Clothier, and I have no cloth or anything to make cloth out of. Oh well, theres plenty of doors, guess I'll just lock him into the workshop until he goes mad and dies of thirst. His wife and mule will probably be pretty upset though.

Or maybe not so much the mule. I guess he's decided that if his master is going to be locked in a room to die of insanity and thirst then hes going to be locked in it with him.

I just started playing and got used to the controls rather quickly (although I would prefer menus and total mouse control). What the game really needs is a good tech tree with the installation, simply because it takes too long to find out which workshops I need when etc <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Btw: If you encounter trouble with certain menus and especially the z-axis just change your keyboard layout to english <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

You have failed the Dwarven litmus test!

    Tech trees:

Basic Farming -> Booze -> Cave Wheat/Long Grass Farming -> More Booze -> Steel production -> Legendary Marksdwarves -> Adamantine production -> Kill HIDDEN FUN STUFF with your 20 legendary marksdwarves encased in steel and ballistas down choke points -> Mine the rest of the Adamantine -> Produce STUFF out of what you just mined -> Abandon fortress -> Adventure mode and loot that +adamantine+ whip. -> Solve the world's alcoholism problem -> Establish a coupe, DEATH TO MAYORS! -> Get bored and quit until the next update.
