Woo my golden road is done <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
I see <b>someone</b> has found valuable ore. I have only found copper, very little aluminum and one decent size gold vein. Other than that, I've had to melt goblin iron objects or buy metals from caravans. So my 8 magma smelters are idle most of the time <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
It depends on the stone type of the area. In the Obsidian mountain I've got a fort in there's only the occasional large cluster of hematite and some even rarer small clusters of gem and aluminum, but tons of useless cinnabar everywhere. ######sux.

Outside my fort is basically a gigantic armour store. Fields upon fields of bits of armour from repelled invaders. Can I somehow melt it all down? My smelters have a "Melt down metal object" function but I can't seem to be able to choose what it melts down.

You must flag the items you want to allow for melting. You can do this by looking at an item with the k-cursor and pressing 'm', or you can use the Stocks- screen. After you've flagged items for melting, order the job at the smelter (and put it on repeat <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> )

Yeah, when I melt down all this iron I'll never want for iron ever again. EVER. I'm going to have to build a new storeroom or six to hold it all.

yes, then shift + < > to go up and down.
Also <a href="http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/List_of_user_character_sets#Markavian" target="_blank">Markavians</a> tileset is still the bestest, the filled in walls and overall sharpness is just sex.
Yeah, I went with Markavian's too. Good compromise, although then I went and changed things that confused me, so now my dwarves have names with levers in them and there are clothes15] plump helmet spawns in the bags.

I'm running an old version and I suspect this one doesn't allow that. Selecting something with K and pressing M doesn't do anything, nor can I find a Stocks screen.

In the pre-z-level versions (assuming you're playing one of them) you need to have the bookkeeper noble before you get access to the Stocks screen. I don't quite remember how melting metal objects went in the old versions, but I think you should be able to do it at least from the Stocks-screen once you get access to it. So once you get the bookkeeper, a new tab appears in the overview window (z-menu)

I've just started minting coins like mad. Hopefully I'll get a bookkeeper soon.
I would recommend putting those coins in their own stockpile and locking them away before the bookkeeper arrives, lest every single dwarf take tiny portions of coins and scatters them all over the fort. Luckily, dwarves are perfectly capable of operating on debit.

And you'd likely become a victim of the infamous 'coin explosion' when the n number of coin stacks explode into n*500 separate coins. Your forge will be horribly cluttered and it's basically impossible to clean it up <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
I think the coin 'splosion has been fixed in the newest version o_O . I'm too lazy to read the few latest changelogs (since I wasn't playing DF when they came out) so I'm not quite sure what has happened <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

any do any of you use graphics packs? I personally use Mikes Mayday pack.
