a debate
the other day, i was discussing easy methods of peeling an orange with a friend. she mentioned that firmly pushing it against a hard surface, prior to peeling it, makes the outter part more loose and, therefore, easier to peel. i was totally skeptical about this and she told me to ask anybody; namely a group of intelligent individuals. i havent gone about doing that, so before i do, ill probably ask you guys.

we made a $5 bet, so this isnt a trivial debate. does pushing the orange against a hard surface make it easier to peel?

Why not test it with some very similar oranges (like from the same bunch/batch/whatever)

coming from experience, living in Miami and eating a ton of oranges all the time, that it does not make any difference... what matters when peeling an orange is what kind of orange you want to peel, juice or your regular navel/velencia eating orange.

A ripe velencia orange will peel much easier than a cold naval orange.

I don't see how it would make it easier to peel (the skin is sort of stuck to the orange, it ain't gonna come off by pushing it on harder) but I do know your orange is going to be mildly bruised for no reason. Just grow a fingernail and peel it like a normal person.

    orange peeler ftw

i find making 4 perpendicular cuts down the sides from top to bottom and then pulling those off works good... however if you have alot of time making a spiral cut from top to bottom or visa versa works better in my opinion

I'm actually drinking orange juice right now. Yes, it's a mighty fine blend of oranges, sugar, and other chemicals that I don't even want to think about. Mmm!

Someone should invent an orange peeling robot to finally end this debate.

I remember seeing one of those things once. You put the orange in, and it peels it for you. *Also works on apples, and other assorted fruits and vegetables!* Ah, the wonders of modern technology. Only Flayra knows what'll come next... And maybe Chrono.

the best way is to smoosh your face to it and go " RUALHBABAHRAHRARABHA " hoping it would explode in orange-ey goodness.

I have never peeled an orange in my life (use a knife and quarter it! What's wrong with you people?) but it makes sense to me that slightly squishing an orange against a hard surface would break or weaken the stuff holding the peel to the orange.

What is with all these random responses. He in no way asked how to peel an orange. It's like you're answering every question but the one he asked.

I'd say that it makes no difference at all.

Yes, it does make it easier to peel. It breaks the juice cells, thus seperating the peel from the part that you eat.

While I've never proceeded with the intense scientific study of peeling oranges and the various methods of doing so... my gramma always told me all round food with a peel is easier to peel if you squish/roll it on a flat surface first. Got to go with what grammy says right?

Something about peeling an orange has been troubling me for years, and this thread seems like the perfect place to ask for advice.

To peel an orange, i pierce the skin with a fingernail and then rip off a piece, followed by a larger piece and then a larger piece until it is fully peeled. This style seems to work just fine, except for one thing. When i go to eat my juicy orange, i notice loads of stringy, papery white bits all over it (The stuff sticking the orange to the skin, i think). These are pretty tasteless, but still horrible enough to ruin the whole orange eating experience. I normally spend a good 5 minutes taking every little piece off so i can enjoy my orange.

Please, Natural-selection forumites, help me out. Is my peeling style wrong? Am i getting low quality oranges or am i just being fussy?
