Exactly why I knife my oranges rather than peel them.

Come to think of it, the TSA would be good at peeling oranges. Give 'em a catpack, and give them a knife. *Swoosh*

To peel an orange, i pierce the skin with a fingernail and then rip off a piece, followed by a larger piece and then a larger piece until it is fully peeled. This style seems to work just fine, except for one thing. When i go to eat my juicy orange, i notice loads of stringy, papery white bits all over it (The stuff sticking the orange to the skin, i think). These are pretty tasteless, but still horrible enough to ruin the whole orange eating experience. I normally spend a good 5 minutes taking every little piece off so i can enjoy my orange.

Please, Natural-selection forumites, help me out. Is my peeling style wrong? Am i getting low quality oranges or am i just being fussy? <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
Suck it up and eat them. Those contain fiber, an essential nutrient for preventing heart disease and colon cancer.

Myself, I'm firmly with the quarterers, but from my experience, the only difference between untouched and 'pressed' oranges is that the latter are even liklier to dribble all over you.

Huh?? are you supposed to <i>peel</i> it?

I have never tried pressing an orange against a hard surface before peeling it. However, it makes sense that it would help. The orange is a sphere (approximately), so the peel, which is further out, has more surface area than the orange that is underneath it (not by much, but probably enough). When the orange is pushed up against a flat surface, you are trying to fit two layers with different surface areas into the same area. Either the orange peel has to compress in that area, or it has to peel away some from the orange underneath. So, it makes sense to me that it would work.

omg, im seriously disappointed in the NS community on this one.

    OK, here we go.

For MOST citrus fruits, what you do it place it on a hard surface, and with a flat hand, firmly apply a downward pressure while rolling it back and forth 1 or 2 times. This breaks up the pulp ever so slightly and the friction HELPS remove the peel from the fruit, but only helps. To hard and you will have a REALLY juicy and drippy orange. This technique also makes them easier to cut.

ok, how do I know this?
I used to be a bartender, and CONSTANTLY had to cut limes/lemons/oranges. It was a trick of the trade.

    that is all.

Peel the orange, unless it is home grown.
