<b>Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem</b> I can't believe I forgot about this game! The 'insanity effects' were incredibly cool, and served to scare the player on a RL level, instead of the in-game level. COMPLETELY new level of fear... especially playing it alone, in the middle of the night, even with the lights on.
Didn't help that they apparently took some of the sanity effects from my TV (volume turning down, mute on, different channel, power off) and that my memory card was already twitchy (game apparently freezes and 'no data found on card 1' is displayed). The melty scenes and vhold-loss ones were a bit freaky... excellent work on the effects, if only the game was a bit better. It got a touch ho-hum after the Egypt page. But the sanity effects kept fooling me. I went to yell at someone for turning the volume all the way down, only to find no one there, and the remote sitting beside me... I went to turn the damn thing off, and it turned the volume back up before I could get to it. :b
Well its the scariest game Iv played, but the cargo bays were the worst and then the recration dec with the music almost sounding like a hear beat as for the cargo bays it sounded as if you were being watched as metal fell.
Then there is the fact that it is near pitch black most of the way, oh and there is a bunch of hybrid alien/humans on the ship...
In Postal 2:Share the pain.. it was a lovely wednesday and there I was, peeing on the dudes fathers grave.. and BANG two hillbilles knock me out. I wake up in a box. To be realistic though, I remember my big brother playing Resident Evil (1) on playstation some years ago when I was a small kid. They played it in a totally dark room, and I went in to peek what they were doing and on TV I saw a dude walking on a mansion going "cool, what's that" then watched as they went in a door, to the left, looked right and there was some bald dude knelt over another man... twitching... then the cut-scene of a badly burned zombie looking over his shoulder... I almost cried then <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo--> (I still couldn't be able to play those games)
I'd have to say any part of a Resident Evil Game I played.... I cant evil walk straight im so jumpy in them... The shortest time I have ever played a RE game.. was 4 minutes.. on the RE for GCN... Longest... 3 days.. RE 2 for PSX
And better yet... Another in Clocktower 2 ... early in game, when you reach your first door to go in.. A police mans head falls off when you approach him, and in same area.. when you walking on the high platform, the wood breaks on you.

The Town - This game received a lot of flak for sucking, but if you got past it's problems, it was a good game. Though one thing that made the game so scary was one of it's problems - it's controls. Because your arm and gun were part of the world, if you banged up against an object, you could drop your weapon. This town was very old, buildings had fought nature and lost, and none of the builds felt especially safe. With all of the buildings and corners, there were plenty of areas for raptors to sneak up on you and make you lunch. And you see, when they sneak up on you, you don't know they're there until they're only a few feet away. When they're that close, when you turn around, you'll hit your weapon against them and can't an aim on them, or worse, drop your weapon. This adds together to really make you fear close combat with anything. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Alot of the time you could keep them away with your gun without dropping it, and sometimes they sort of hurt themselves on your gun without you firing and die.

Mine suck because I can't play scary games because I'm a wimp. Any time there's A. Shadows or B. Aliens in Half-Life or Opposing Force, I get totally freaked out. Climbing down a ladder and hearing "HREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" behind you sucks when watching The Ring scrwed you up pretty badly for a while.

I remember I played Resident Evil 2 at a friends house, and I was at the end of the game, in this powergenerator room (can't remember exactly). When Dr.William Birkin , now a huge gross monster, falls through the ceiling... that made me go "OH SH*T!" I was desperate and attacked him with my knife and he died pretty quick. To my suprise, he mutated even more! At that moment, I made the most perfect flying dive towards the ON/OFF-button on the Playstation.
That was some years ago. Today I'm more like "COME GET SOME!" <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo--> and have alot higher tolerance for fear.

Any kind of asylum map is freaky. If you remember Zork Nemesis , you should have been traumatized by the lifeless , frozen 20 story asylum (don't remember the cryptic name , sorry) in which you had to to decapitate a corpse and impale the head on an electronic device to make it speak <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo--> frozen blood everywhere , madmen/children specters and weird sensory devices. I never had the courage to finish that one...
Hitman (codename 47) asylum doesn't look very scary at first , but the tension is slowly building while and after you kill the swats.
ThieveryUT has a creepy asylum as well , apparently all the patients are dead (some cremated , some hanging on the webs of the huge , freaky , man eating spider) and the only clues of human activity are the doctor's mad experiments.
Having not played SS2 , I must say my scariest FPS experience was in Operation Na Pali (SP mod for UT1) , the Assimilation Project. At first you know little about it , the skaarj warriors mention it several time with pride , but after a while you start seeing less and less enemies - instead of ambushing you , they hide in the old fortress's chambers , in fear of something... more and more skaarj corpses laying everywhere , some nailed to the stone , some mutilated - then , you encounter the first "assimilated" nali. Instead of the usual benevolent looking face , he's seemingly hollow - you're not sure wether he has eyes or not. Dried blood all over his body , he bombards you with his favorite hand-held artillery. But that's not all - once you kill him , and manage to pass through a high powered laser fence (tricky part) you face 2 uglier assimilated nalis with unusual energy weapons. After that , you don't see a single living skaarj - only their logs , mentionning the failed experiment and the issues they had with the 3rd phase nali , who freed the other ones...
Then you enter the freakiest setup ever done on the Unreal engine. Artificial yet dark lighting scheme , weird and panicking ambiant sounds , the ravaged assimilation lab (a hateful looking yet motionless nali still floating in a containment tube) amplifies your paranoia , you know know <b>he</b> will show up soon , but when ? You see the gray specter of a nali , apparently fleeing - then , as you enter the 2nd part of the lab , the freaky semi-cyborg nali finally shatters a glass tube right next to you before engaging.
If you have UT , you have to try it. Firstly ONP is one of the best SP mods ever , but the Assimilation Project has nothing to envy to the system shock series dark atmosphere and scaryness. One of the most intense experiences...

<b>Alien versus Predator 2</b> Somewhere in the beginning, you enter the complex and about 5 seconds later an explosion kills your buddies. You proceed with care, checking every corner. Then you enter some room and HEAR a predator and SEE his 3 little aiming dots slowly moving towards you. He was invisible. In those 3 seconds I gave up.. I just stood there, waiting for it to happen, following those dots slowly, watching them come closer. Right before the dots would hit me, they dissapeared. I carefully watched around the little room, looking for the predator. While throwing out some flashes and using my flashlight I completely swiped the little room. After 2 min I left it by the elevator. Lol.
Also, some other level, where you are supposed to save your boss or whatever.. At a certain moment, you are in front of an elevator.. a steamy, redlighted one. The elevator that leads you the the nest, where your boss is. Damn that was scary. I went in, pushed the button and hold thight. Ready to pop anything that would come out... Nothing came, the doors opened behind me. My view into the room was half blocked by steamy pipes. I didn't dare to move out because I knew there was going to happen something. I closed my eyes and pushed my W button. I released it, opened my eyes slightly. Nothing. Damn. I walked furter into the nest. Seeing my boss glued on the wall. I proceeded to her. She told me to kill her. At the very same moment my teammates scream on the radio to get out of there. I run away. Meanwhile, on my way back, 50 aliens were on my back. Olo.
After that I got used to it and I just rushed most of it.
<b>Thief 1</b>
I just played one level at my friends house. Can't remember the name. You return to some town just to find out it's been taken over by some sort of creepy bug humans or whatever. The part where you enter the castle was scary. The hissing of those creatures, the sound, shape.. meh. I stood there in the shadow, looking at them walking. All of the sudden I got spotted somehow. This scary creature started to spray bees at me with his mouth. I ran away. Waited a couple of moments outside and returned. I took a left and found a blocked door. I stood there jumping and trying to find a way to get through the door, while all of the sudden I heard the hissing of that creature behind me. I turned around and jumped out of the chair.

Playing Resident Evil for the GC is one ofe the most stressfull things to do with your friends. (Scoot) We used to play that game, and hed be going and id be like "DUDE DONT GO THERE! THE ZOMBIES WILL FLY OUT THE WINDOWS... *zombie jumps through window* "<span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'>ACK!!!</span>"
And then there was another part in Resident Evil where we went outside to like collect some herbs n crap, and I saw all these dogs across the fence, and i started taunting them just by running around in front of them and stuff, and then a few seconds later I bend down to grab a herb and the dogs somehow get over the fence, and just go ape shi<b>p</b> on my back. I think id just about had a heart attack.
Aside from the general pant-pooing ambience, 2 specific points in Silent Hill 3 caught me out.
One was in a room full of mannequins in various states of repair. Only a single mannequin had a head, leading to a comment by the female character I was commanding. Nothing is happening, so I go to leave the room. Suddenly there's a piercing scream. I nervously walk back into the room, and the mannequin that formally had a head is now headless with blood pouring out its neck stump <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->.
The other was towards the end, in a horrifically hellish hospital. I found myself starin g at a mirror the size of one end of this small room. As I moved, my mirror self moved as it should be. Suddenly my mirror self stops moving. I'm kinda scared at this point, so I go to leave. The door is locked. Blood starts to creep in veins along the floor and snakes around my mirror self (really good technical effect for the PS2, by the by). Eventually the room is saturated and I start losing health. Thank God the door is now open, and I make a hasty exit.
Seeing as I havnt played most of the game mentioned here, I going to have to say the first level of The Suffering. Having to fight slayers (wierd humaniods with blades for arms/leg, the ones in the trailer) with nothing but a shiv made from a bedpost.
This zombie panic mod sounds like a blast. I might be tempted to throw my modeling/mapping/skinning skills at it.
Edit : The mod sounds like Elite Force's Assimilation mode. In that, you'd start off on the Federation side, except for one player who would be the Borg queen. If the Borg queen died, then the federation won. If all of the federation players were assimilated, then the Borg won. It was a blast, unfortunately, it was added in an expansion pack and few servers ran the mode.
Its pitch dark, you can't see squat, all you hear is scuttlescuttlescuttle and occasional glimpses of some black <i>thing</i> in the shadows. Then it rushes your team, bam! 2 are zombiefied. You pepper it with las fire but it keeps on rolling. Desperate, you bring out the Autocannons Heavy cannons. The heavy cannon AP shot bounces off it. You light the entire area up with HE shots, levelling every bit of structure within 12 squares of the the chryssalid... <b><i>and its still standing</i></b>.
Finally you down it with literally your last pistol shot. Turn ends, the two zombified marines explode, and turn into full chryssalids. The doors on the warehouse open and three more zombies pour out into the street. You're <b><i><u>doomed</i></b></u>.
Edit - The only recent equivalent would be Project Zero, your first big boss ghost. MORE ROPES!! MORE ROPES!!! AAAAAAAAGH!!!
The start of resident evil Zero on the GC Mainly because i was at a friedn's house and one of the people was holding a guitar, and he would randomly play a chord really loud and it scared the crap outta me.
[EDIT:] and the forest/shadow temples in OoT Redead, not good Wallmaster, worse Floormaster, even <i>worse</i>

Commander Keen 1, played with my very first joystick, the original Gravis gamepad. During one level I was coming up towards the boss, knowing that all the bosses in the game were the same random-jumping, don't-touch-or-you-die variety.
The boss clipped through a wall due to a bug in the game and the AI was *just* intelligent enough for it to follow me backwards through the entire level until I outmaneuvered it and it jumped itself into a bottomless pit towards the beginning of the level. Until then, <i>utter terror</i> for me at a time when I could count my age on my two hands and I didn't think that what I'd seen was even <i>possible.</i> I nearly had an athsma attack.
[edit]Maveric, X-Com UFO defense was one of my faves too, can't believe I forgot all the crazy moments like that.

I thought many areas of Clive Barkers Undying was scary as HELL.....so I clame the whole game as a scary area. <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='skulk.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I stopped being afraid of the dark at all when I was 12 or something(I can easilly <s>walk</s> stumble around in the woods at 2 in the morning without getting the slightest scared, in fact it's very peacefull and quiet and the strange people you sometimes meet are quite interesting), I will hardly be scared by darkness alone in a video game.
I'm not at all scared by gore, I've been properly desensitized(decided one day that if I ever happened to be in a serious accident I needed to keep calm about it, and I knew that even a small wound would make me disgusted to the point of becomming dizzy(<!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->). Thanks to the interweb I have access to allsorts of creepyness and there is very little that can disgust me now. Sadly it didn't help much with the original problem, even a nasty scrape wound against asphalt or something will make me disgusted to the point of being dizzy still...). I'll hardly be scared by gory or generally gross red pixels in games.
The only things that will scare me at all anymore is the feeling of NOT being helpless but needing to pay attention or suffer the consequences and the feeling that it is actually of consequence that I not die/fail. If the situation is actually hopeless(e.g. being repetedly respawn killed) there is the feeling that whatever you do it wont matter so you may as well not care. Scripted things are predictable and when you've seen it once it's the same thing over and over, only scary a maximum of one time. The few things that are left and still creepy is having unpredictable and smart opponents(usually means real people) and having a situation where there is a lot riding on you alone. Guarding a PG alone in NS while waiting for res so one can be built in the base there would be alot riding on you, your opponents would not be daft as fruit flies and unless you are up against hopeless odds(e.g. lmg vs fade) it should get your heart pumping quite nicely unless you have motion tracking.
I find that games like AvP2 totally failes to be scary in any other way than being startling at times(loud noises, things poping out from an unexpected angle). The enemies are predictable, the environment felt stale and unimersive although it looked quite nice, they totally failed to make me care about the people you are with in the game, where the enemies are spawned is scripted and they are really really dafy, they never stalk you but rather just run in a straight line toward you, it feels so canned. I even find rescuing the hostages in CS more scary than this(I'm not exaggerating), and I find the Church of Scientology ten times more scary than this("oh the humanity!").
If there existed a multiplayer game which puts emphasis on being frightening and making every player feel that there is a lot riding on them staying alive/not failing and allways making it feel like you could possibly survive somehow without making the game seem so random that it's like haveing little controll it could be so much more scary than any single player game could ever hope to be IMO.

Being in that room as last survivor with a load of zombies after you is an experience you won't likely forget quickly. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I WANT TO BE A TESTER!
<span style='color:red'>** This contains spoilers!!**</span>
<b>Alien versus Predator 2</b>
Somewhere in the beginning, you enter the complex and about 5 seconds later an explosion kills your buddies.
We used to play that game, and hed be going and id be like "DUDE DONT GO THERE!
Mainly because i was at a friedn's house and one of the people was holding a guitar, and he would randomly play a chord really loud and it scared the crap outta me.
[EDIT:] and the forest/shadow temples in OoT
Redead, not good
Wallmaster, worse
Floormaster, even <i>worse</i>

They're not killed, you're cut off. If I remember correctly, Predator never aims at you in the begining. He just runs around the complex.

I'm not saying he does, but he is about to.. You see his 3 little dots moving over the floor towards you as it suddenly stops and goes away.
Thats actually why I liked the Cradle. I'm going through there, and nothing attacks me for a long time. I'm actually getting worried because theres nothing fighting me. And then, I walk through a door to an entrance into the area that held the most insane patients, and I see something run past me in the darkness and disappear.
Thank god I have plenty of flash-bombs.
Oh, and if someone could help me out with that level:
How do I get Patient No. 1's "toy", the hanging dummy? I try to "use" it, but nothing happens. I've tried shooting and stabbing it too, but to no avail. And, yes, Lauryl has already told me to gather everything.
The whole game.
You never knew when an Ixupi was three seconds from snatching a part of your soul...
Really? I'll have to check into that again. It should add to the creep factor.
