When we get some more atmospheric maps and better models, Zombie Panic will do fine for your needs.

I havent played very many scary games lately, lol.
The last scary area was probably the zombie level in RTCW, that made me scared.
Also, in Serious Sam there's this area where you have to run through a "door of darkness" which is basically a big black void thats in the middle of a hallway, and then you're really close to the wall on the other side. So there's not much space between you and complete darkness... and then you hear skeleton footsteps! D:

Ooohhh yeah, I remember that. The intro for that level was great for setting me up into "Im creeped" mode.

    <b>Silent Hill:</b>

    1) The locker in the school. Also, when you went into the bathroom in the alternate school... blood-stained, bits of *something* all over the place... and then you left and it wasn't even the same hallway anymore, you'd somehow slipped through "reality" and were on the 2nd floor.

    2) In the hospital, you walk through the first floor, trying every door... all locked. You go down to the basement *shudder* and restart the generator, but nothing happens. You get in the elevator, try the 2nd floor; the door to the main ward is locked. So you try the third floor, the top floor; the door is locked there, too. Now what? You get back in the elevator... and there's a button for the 4th floor. I sat there for 5 minutes, my cursor hovering over the [4] button, just saying "aw man... no... I don't want to... aww crap..." until I finally hit the button and everything started sucking.

    3) The first time you're outside in the alternate world. You hear those birds flying around in circles just beyond the range of your pitiful flashlight... but you can't see them for the life of you till they're divebombing your head.

    <b>System Shock 2:</b>

I played the demo by myself, late one night, in the dark. I saw my first zombie, managed somehow to kill it... then I exited and uninstalled the demo. Then I tried to go to sleep. Yeah, right.

    <b>Some PS1 Game</b>
Forget the title, but it was a three word horror one IIRC. In the very beginning you get stuck on an island (one guy and a girl) and you have to reunite. You get 8 shots for your pistol (yes thats about enough to kill 2 things). You meet up with one zombie-type thing on the way to a building, shoot it, then go into a partly flooded room. My friend was playing, he walked in, turned around after a zombie popped out, shot it, then proceeded to walk through the silent room. Less than a second after our heart rates went back to normal after the suprise zombie, a giant water monster popped up and killed my friend's character instantly, making a horrendous noise and nearly giving us all heart attacks... He never got past that point in the game since he refused to go in that room again.

    <b>Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem</b>
Aside from the "you dead in the tub" scene, there were a few scenes when you're the fat doctor guy that were pretty freaky. I remember walking into a closet, seeing a servant and starting to reload my gun. Big freakin mistake. 3 seconds later the bone thief inhabiting the long-dead servant's flesh jumped out and dug into me. I could have done something had I not dropped the control out of sheer shock (this was my first time playing, I started on this level, and my friend neglected to tell me about bone thieves). As for the insanity effects, 99% are cool or freaky, but one is just a complete atmosphere breaker. There's one where you go into a room and there's a few of those normally-huge monsters (some bird-like thing IIRC, only huger than normal). Its an insanity effect thankfully. I exited that room, and re-entered it. This time, I got the atmosphere breaker. It was a similar scene, only the hundreds of monsters were about 2 inches tall. I ran around squishing them until the effect wore off. Also, those volume effects provide interesting real-life antics. My friend was playing, got that effect, turned around and proceeded to throw his brother off the back of the couch (damn funny) and say "Stop f***ing with the remote, ****", until he realised it was an insanity effect <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Yea, the cradle in thief deadly shadows scared me shitless too. But there weren't as many zombies as the level in Thief 2 where you go in the catacombs, that was far scarier.

But the one game, that scared me to the point of nightmares for 3 straight days was:
    Return to Castle Wolfenstein
The level in the catacombs. The burning zombies and normal zombies were bloody scary, and the sound effects they made are the best ive ever heard.

You think that's good. Wait until you get the Blue Screen of Death one. Oh man. My friend has the game, and he's not too comp suave, but the other friend that was over and myself are-ish. So my friend's playing the game and he walks into a room and the game gets quiet as the message pops up, and we just start laughing our **** off whilst my friend doesn't understand.

I hate you, Mullet. You made me just curious enough to download the demo, and I have soiled three pants so far.

That being said, Clive barker's Undying is an amazingly scary game, and it makes me want to check out Clive Barker's other works.

I just started playing Eternal Darkness yesterday. Maybe I'm a pansy, but I finished the three chapters in the tome, headed upstairs, passed the bleeding painting, and then turned the damn thing off. *shudder*

    I'll try again with company. ^^;;

Anything that involves bathrooms. ESPECIALLY Silent Hill. That just freaked me out.

Well, that, and zombies crashing out of the windows in RE.

And I find people combusting quite amusing in Parasite Eve actually. Must be my weird affinity with fire :\

    I know a few...

Halo - Level 6 in its entirety. After the 10th time around it's pretty boring, but the first few times I played this level it scared me more than anything else in a game had before. The Flood were pretty scary in their own right, but the absolute surprise ensured by the media's silence really freaked me out. I did not see this coming... And then there's the feeling of being lost, alone, in a dungeon full of alien zombies trying to find your way out after the only apparent exit is blocked. In the end it turns into a run-and-gun rush to the waypoint with about 30 Marines, which reminded me of the games I used to play with my friends when I was about 10. At night in the forest.

Dino Crisis 3 - the beginning was pretty scary (if you want a sample just read the first few chapters of The Behemoth in the Fanfic secion), but even though I got past the fear I found terrible gameplay and the worst camera system since... ever. Good thing it was a rental.

Opposing Force - when the G-man betrays you. It's not really that scary, but when it first happened to me I just thought "S***."

F.E.A.R. - I just watched the 15 minute gameplay video. This thing looks like it's going to be better than caffeine for keeping me awake, and about 5x harder on the ol' nerves. I'm going to put my neck out and declare it the scariest FPS game ever. Keep in mind that I have never played System Shock 2 (it was before my time and I don't feel like ordering). Also, I hate survival/horror games because they have ridiculous stories, terrible camera systems, and you get to play as an amazing underpowered pansy. When I borrowed my friend's GameCube and loaded up Resident Evil for the first time I laughed at the voice acting, played for a bit, and said "They got all excited over <i>this</i>? What a piece of s***. It's not even scary." Because it's not scary - I don't care about some incompetent rent-a-cops.

    System Shock 2, definatly

especially in the end, the "Body of the Many" when you run trough a giant alien organism and everything lives around you disgusting AND scary as hell with all the noises

Notice the pattern going on here?

Anything with zombies or aliens, and places that are dark have the scare factor.

If a game had Richard Simmons, now that would be scary!

Imagine a dark room, than all of a sudden RS pops out of the shadows doing jumping jacks and says "hello there, lets do some leg crunches!!1" in that annoying high pitched voice.

Even moreso when he lobs a grenade at you.

I think that giant tentacle thing in HL was scary too, with all the heavy tapping on the metal, very scary when you make a bad move :o

System Shock 2 - I uninstalled the game after my first encounter with a zombie. I looked around, and suddenly I saw a zombie right next to me, trying to say "run". First of all, my mouse made my view spin many times. Secondly I jumped at my chair, almost kicking my keyboard down with my knees.

Thief 1 - Some abandoned mines, with zombies in it. I though I'd walk over a corpse, no big deal. But when the corpse suddenly stood up and attacked me, I didn't play the game for a week <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> .

Thief 2 - (<span style='color:red'>Warning, a small spoiler</span>) In the rooftop level, I went to that one tower with a book on a table. I read the book, and when I turned around, 2 zombies were behind me. I didn't know what to do! I 'paniced', tried to climb on the table (ingame <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> ) as the zombies attacked me.

They Hunger (3) - Zombie cows/bulls (I seem to have some issues with zombies <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo--> . Strange that I'm a PT in Zombie Panic). Their moo'ing is just so... SO... UN-COWISH! Scared the crap outta me.
