That's from planethalflife. Seems they don't know when the Steam Client is supposed to be released.
you have to connect with steam to play on LAN!!!!!!! <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> Shortly after release they will make one that works on lan. And lan isn't even all the important RIGHT AWAY. Now please anyone who doesn't know what they are talking about go to #steam and read what it says.
I hope the Community <span style='font-family:Impact'><span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'><span style='color:red'>revenge</span></span></span> it for STEAM.
If you guys cry so much about LAN playing then what are you doing in this forum? It's on the internet right? But if we don't see it that way right now and say you somehow mysteriously can see this page without an internet connection, then why are you talking so much about something you have to download? Half-Life won't just stop working when steam is released.
@Icecream: I understand your concerns, yet I have to tell you that you shouldn't become so agitated about a rumor.
It's possible to disable the auto-update feature of steam and handle the updating in the 'classic way' (i.e. getting patches of game mag cds, get the file from a friend with broadband, etc.).
Also the final Steam version will work like a download-manager so your download would continue at the spot you'd left off after a disconnection interval.
Future versions of Steam will enable you to play botmatches and singleplayer offline (this may also include lan-gaming).
So wait for the thing to come out before getting angry at it.
I checked out the server status page of the steampowered webpage. Looks like they are updating the content servers first before providing us with the client download.
My guess is, that the client will be released once every content server is up and running. I still remember the collapse of the content delivery servers on the day they wanted to release the public beta of CS 1.6 via Steam. Seems they have learned from this.

I havn't gone through every page of this thread but I want to help relieve people of some of their fears of steam that I know many people have. -
You will not have to pay for steam, there is the option to pay for content on steam on a monthly basis (you get all valve content for $9.99 a month, whether thats a good deal or not remains to be seen), but you if buy a game in the shops you can play it on steam at no charge.
Steam is not terribly buggy, the beta had some problems but the final release should be fairly stable on the majority of machines, although it may be required to run in windows 98/me compatiblity mode.
You can use custom models - again this was not provided in the beat but will be added for the final release.
You can still use third party software programs to connect to games - this was not provided in the beta, but should be added for the final release.
You can still play all other half life mods, this will not stop mods such as NS.
The beta code used a lot of bandwidth and system resources, most of these issues should be fixed in the final release.
Valve is not trying to screw you over, this company needs to keep its player base to survive, steam is a good program being provided for free.
The steampowered website is slow because it is under DoS attack (Denial of Service, basically the page is refreshed very quickly by lots of users all over the world so no one else can get a connection).
56k Users - The only problem here really is the initial download, there isn't a huge ping problem (maybe 2-10ms), but you would have to download the cs and hl update anyway, so this isn't any different really, and in the end it will cut down the ammount you need to download (as they only release small patches).
The True Problems with steam -
You need a net connection to use steam at a lan, while this is true, I cant see valve stopping you to play a lan because of this, I would think/hope there is a seperate way to setup a lan game, you just wont have the benefits of steam.
Unconfirmed
The spyware issue I have not yet been able to confirm or not, any help would be welcome.
Anyone who doesn't like/hates steam hasn't fully understood this issues here, and I urge you to give it a chance to get setteled in, this does not mean trying it out and getting one error or a 15min download dialog and saying, "this sucks, im goint to play ut2k3" give it a chance for the issues to be sorted and you will find it is a very good program.
Since Steam requires an internet connection, my birthday party at a LAN will have to be canceled if Steam doesnt get its offline mode on quickly, which totally sucks.
Sry if I was wrong but I live in germany for me at the time I posted it was still tomorrow <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Something to look at while waiting for the steam building up pressure. <a href='http://collective.valve-erc.com/index.php?news=1063319154-65935800' target='_blank'>Link</a> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Watch Half-Life2 DX9 DemoVid (<a href='http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=3619' target='_blank'>Fileshack Link</a>) while you wait for Steam. You'll have to register to download stuff there (but it's free).
The only thing I liked steamed is my vegetables! j/k I like vegetables raw but seriously, people don't like be forced to do things but valve is trying to push their community ahead a giant leap, this is a controversy that has a lot of people, well... steamed...
