There will be mutilple SKU's to get HL2, two of them are steam. there will be one where you only pay once and get the game(s) with it, and one where you pay a monthly fee, but get updated by Valve's latest games(like CS:CZ,TFC2(??, it isn't a myth??) and expansion packs). that's about all i know about that.

It's actually quite funny how wrong 90% of you are.
First of all, you will be able to connect through third party software to servers. (DUH!) Whether or not the program itself will need an upgrade - I don't know, but you will.
LANs will not die. Valve is not stupid and will not destroy so much of their business as to do this.
Also, if you base your experiences with Steam on the beta, then I'm rather glad you aren't going to play. It's a beta, meaning not yet done, meaning it's GOING to be rough around the edges. And actually, once I got it working ( took me a day ) I had zero problems with it and had a ton of fun.
So please, stop spreading unfounded rumors and go out a research before you post.
All I know is that once I've bought the game in the store, I WILL NOT pay a penny more to play it online. I already fork out quite a considerable sum (as do the subscribers to Roob's NTFM server) to have our own lovely spanking server and I simply cannot AFFORD to pay another penny to play on my own server (I'm a student still, albeit a graduate one).
I also don't want to have a "gamespy"-like program on my PC. I simply don't trust it, plus I don't want all my hard earned resources used up displaying big green buttons and a chat service I will never use.
From a server admin point of view, the WONID non conversion is a BIG deal. We spend a good deal of our gaming time sorting out the cretins from the good guys, only to have the wonderful opportunity to do it all over again.
So forgive me for being so down on this when I really know nothing about it, but I fear a "pay to play" culture will soon be forced upon us and it's something I *strongly* object to once you've bought the game in store.
Roobubba - Well, obviously I can't speak for what will happen in the future, but right now their plans for HL2 do not require pay-to-play. If you buy it in the store, you own it. Period. You get the upgrades and the multiplayer with no monthly fee. If you don't want to buy it in the store, you can subscribe to steam premium (Or whatever they call it) for $10/month, and get unlimited access to all valve games, including expansion packs and other games.

I'm personally no fan of Steam (beta), but maybe final will be better...
Steam eats up resources, you currently need to be running steam to run a server in beta (I think) and will force server administrators to raise the cost of their servers for rent due to the higher CPU utilization. I personally think the pros outweigh the cons, and there will be a 2 or some odd week grace period where WONids will still be in effect. By then most of the major flaws that will inevitably pop up will be flattened out.
Well, i've made it no secret in #naturalselection that i'm not liking Steam.
Most of my opinions are based on the beta, admittedly, but i have as much experience with the final release as anyone else. This meaning i have as much right to say it'll be crap as anyone else has of saying it'll be great. Neither of us know.
When it comes to gaming online, there are three things that concern me. I'll address each point and give my opinion on how the pending Steam release will affect it.
1]Pings: Well obviously, pings matter, a bad ping is what can stand between you killing someone or being killed yourself. We all know that. But from the beta of Steam i experienced a ping raise of 50-100ms, this is, quite frankly, unacceptable, so i closed the app and alls well again and my ping drops to 60. While i admit that that was the beta i was using, the confirmed "constant updates" and the adverts in Steam mean that your bandwidth will be constantly trickling away through an application at that point, and from the features list, is useless to me.
2]System Resources: Why, exactly, do i need to have this application running at all times i wish to play Half-Life? I have accounts with MSN, ICQ and AIM, i have no need for another IM client. What's that? You can play checkers? Who cares! I have a checkers board up in my attic and there's a reason it's dusty and been unused for the best part of a decade! I don't NEED ANY of this added crap that Steam gives me. I just don't. I don't want flashy features, i don't want it to suddenly start doing a dance, i want to play Half-Life, i've been playing it for some 5 years without this crap, what makes them think i need it now?
3]Tossers: As you may well know, over the years of Half-Life epic banlists and blacklists have been formed either privately by admins or publically. These are for a VERY good reason. Hell, look at bygames' epic banlist for example, they're all very valid and the sheer number of them is not to be underestimated. So they think it's a GOOD idea that they just reset the banlists and let these legions of griefers and abusive players flood back to the servers they were once banned from? Yeah, maybe a handful of people (in comparison) have been banned for VAC slip-ups, so it's a good thing, but the good doesn't even NEARLY compare to the bad.
So in conclusion, i will use Steam, i love playing Half-Life, but if my pings are drastically affected at all, i will give up and i will end up leaving the community, all because of a very poor decision made by VALVe.
I end with this saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

sorry to sound elitest, but can you even play NS and some of the other more taxing mods on anything less than a 1ghz system? Sure you can play CS, but these seem more like recommended requirements and not the baseline "it wont work at all unless you have this" requirements.

Actually Sillygoose, my point was about the client. Now OK I have a fairly decent (moderate) spec system and I've spent time configuring it well, but I simply don't want adverts, extras, notification about games I'll never want to play, stupid time-wasting chat/games, slinky graphics, feedback reports - all the things that will inevitably go with such a system (we've all seen gamespy, if only in screenshots - gamespy arcade was probably the world's shortest running software on the majority of gamers' systems for a REASON!).
When I want to run a game, I want to have the maximum amount of resources available for it so I can make it look nice and perform well. It might be "only a little bit of memory" but it's MY little bit of memory and there are those much less fortunate than me who need every bit of memory they have!
OK so it's still the same as: buy a game - play it free online for life. That is GOOD, and the way it should be.
I am of course but one small voice amongst many and won't be listened to (especially as I've not even tried the beta or read the details), so my opinion doesn't matter, but I feel that my concerns DO.
Of course, I will reserve final judgement when I try it and see how it affects the system performance, and if there really is any spyware in it

Why is it starting to feel that the domain name "Steam Powered" is less a gimmicky name, but an accurate description of the technology the webserver uses.
EDIT: Uhoh, it just gave me a 404. MORE COAL!

Hehheh, lol.
