We've been trying to play the beta of Steam/CS here at the office, but its horribly buggy. I spent a whole hour trying to download crap and finally connect to the server, but to no avail. My limited experience of Steam is that is sucks bigtime.

Download HL2 via Steam by the way - "as soon as it comes out"... yea, very likely that 50.000 gamers will be able to download this huge game at the same time. Oops, been downloading for 6 hours now... and I got timedout... start again dude.

according to that faq steam can resume downloads that you stop so I think if there's a timeout while you're downloading if you reconnect again you won't have to start from the beginning

I'm tempted to steam up but I don't think any of my usual NS servers will have steam-ified by now so =/

Is it worth it at the moment? I've got blueyonder (1mb broadband) and I'm all curious and stuff ^^;

Well when i got cs1.6 it took a bit of time, but it has never crashed for me, so don't go bashing him. Its probably your computer or a lack of patience, not steam.

playing the steam beta i think im on to something:
the more you use it the less buggy it is, seriously
the first time i used it (adter updates and all) it took me a good 30 mins to actually play
the next time i knocked 5 mins off
and another 5
now when i launch steam i can be in a game within 2 mins
although i play ns now and have left it alone it as of late

OH...MY...GOD...

QUOTE

Do I have to be connected to the Internet when I play Steam games?

The short answer is yes.

All Steam-enabled games require you to be connected to the Internet in order to play.
Note: some Steam-enabled single-player games (such as Half-Life 2) purchased at a retail store will allow offline play until the user decides to play online or enable other Steam functionality. From that point on, an Internet connection will be required.

From the official FAQ.

I simply cannot believe this. I can hardly envision a worse policy than this. Requiring an active internet connection to play single player. This is just unbeleivable. Just knowing this has turned me from being uncaring about Steam to out and out loathing it. I'm asuming from this that all of CS:Condition Zero will require an internet connection (not that I play it ), that just firing up a game of Half Life for old time's sake will be sucking bandwidth.

Not everyone is lucky enough to have an unlimited broadband internet connection. For much of the world's gamers, we operate on accounts with quotas. To force us to maintain an internet connection that's sucking up valuable quota just to play single player is just not on. I don't know what the Steam developers were smoking when they cooked this up but it was some bad-a** stuff.

well from an authentication side of things it's really clever but like you say it's just stupid when you look at it from the practicality side of things ><

I'm amazed nobody's posted up a link to some sort of petition to allow offline lan and single player games on steam =P
• JummehJummeh Join Date: 2003-04-07 Member: 15276Members
I'm very opposed to this but i can see why they have to do this (although not too sure why for halflife)

When valve releases games to be downloaded, it needs a way to identify if your version is valid otherwise one person may download it and then release it onto kazza etc.

Or when valve starts its subscription thing, you can in theory subscribe for a month pay your tenner and then quit and get halflife2 for a tenner. I am guessing this is a contermeasure for that.

But to make a connection necisary for HL lan and SP is just unreasonable. *apparently* its going to be sorted out...
• GeminosityGeminosity :3 Join Date: 2003-09-08 Member: 20667Members
Most people have half-life now and I've heard a lot of people who had a copy of it for so long they eventually just went out and bought it in the end. By pulling this off now with HL they're kinda kicking the people still on pirates in the bum

Not sure if that's why they threatened to do this or not but I hope they fix it... like someone posted not all LANs have access to the net =s

It does not seem to be 'supported'. Will I have to use it if I only play NS?

I don't know where my original CDs are for CounterStrike. Can I find my serial number somewhere in the registry, since I apparently need it again to install Steam?

So basically, the question is how is this going to affect the average NS player.

Thanks.

Think of Steam as a front end to Valve's games. You launch steam and then you choose from a list of Valve's games that you want to play and that game launches within the steam client. Once inside the game you can start up other mods just like normal half life. It's just that now, there is an extra layer on the outside of your game called "Steam" that allows you to IM friends and auto-patches your games for you.

Oh, so I can play single player fine, but the moment I do anything with multiplayer, all following single player content will cutting into my 'net quota.

Of course I read it. This still doesn't legitimise forcing usage of net quota to play single player aspects of a game. Most gamers are going to want to play multiplayer and as such they will have to use the net to play single player.

@Geminosity: It doesn't matter what game or mods you have installed.
The Steam client is for all of them. So you can't do anything wrong

@Nightdragon: As soon as I managed to get through to Steampowered.com
and have the client, I might host it on my private webspace for a limited amount of
time, to take some load of the main sites (will post the link as soon as I have the
installer).

The problem is that all half-life nerds around the globe are going nuts
to get steam as fast as possible so they can register early enough to
get a super low steam id (or something like the number '1 3 3 7').

Imagine a zillion people out there hitting F5 1k times a minute the least,
that would bring any server down on it's knees.

It's probably a better guess to keep an eye out on Planet Half-Life and
other Half-Life related news sites. They will be reachable much easier
then Steampowered.com.

Avoid the steam site itself. I got the installer through one of the official valve mirror sites, and uploaded it to my school hosting for right now. It wont be there much beyond today. Get Steam Installer here.

Thanks for hosting the file. But what you've got there

Keep your eyes open and host the real file once it is out.
