heh I don't think there is a class called "real".  It would either have to be a <b>double</b> or a <b>long int</b> or just a <b>long</b>.  I don't think the ikonboard programmers ever thought that there would be a topic with over 30,000 views!

Someone needs to gather all the stories and make them into one huge book or something, for easy access and enjoyability, that'd be kick ###!!

there's a problem here, if 32,767 is the max, that means it uses a 16 bit int, I'm used to a 32 bit int, and why the heck didn't they make it unsigned?  as if there were going to be a negative number of views.
if it were unsigned they could get it up to 65536.  even on a 16 bit int

    *cough* ONTOPIC *cough*

If you're not a playtester with a new story, or a forumer with a comment regarding a particular story, why are you posting in here?

Here's a quick story of one of my commanding moments.

It was a tiny little 3v3 on NS_Nothing, which is a *huge* map and rather ill-suited to small games.  But it was up on the server, and we were playing, and I got tossed into the commander chair.  I set up *minimal* base defenses - two turrets directly defending the CC and IP, and nothing else - and sent my marines off to the Docking Wing to secure a second node.  They did, and we defended it with another two turrets.

<i>*** TACTICAL NOTE 1: I always set turrets in pairs or more, because you must remember that turrets cannot fire *through* buildings.  If you only set up one turret to protect a building, an alien can hide behind that very building while he chomps away at it. Always protect both sides of a building. ***</i>

Well, at this point we'd determined from the frequency and direction of alien attacks that they were in the Cargo hive, just a few winding corridors west of the Docking Wing.  I said to my LMG-equipped marines "Y'all up to taking a hive?  End this thing early?"  Good troopers, they of course agreed and we set off for the hive.  Upon arrival, my marines were greeted with a pair of Offensive Chambers - turrets - defending the main entrance to the hive room.  I told them to stop immediately.  Rather than rush in, I dropped a turret factory for them to build.  One of them, for some reason or another, fired a few rounds at one of the OC's, for which I promptly and severely rebuked him.

<i>*** TACTICAL NOTE 2: Aliens rely <b>heavily</b> on hive sight to locate potential danger.  Any building or alien under attack notifies all aliens in the game - they receive an audio warning, and the building/alien and its location are displayed in hive sight with a red ring.  This usually results in several aliens converging on the spot immediately to deal with the interlopers.

However, this extremely useful system is also one of the aliens' greatest weaknesses.  Aliens seldom patrol "secure" areas, and a marine team can reach a hive room undetected by avoiding all combat. ***</i>

Thankfully, the brief burst of fire did not bring any aliens to investigate.  The turret factory finished, and I had my marines build two sentry turrets to defend it and the siege turret I was about to build.  As soon as the factory was upgraded, I dropped the siege as close as I could to the hive room while still out of sight of the offensive chambers around the corner.

The siege came online, rotated, and... ***BOOM!***  The resource tower in the hive room shuddered as a sonic shockwave rippled through it and the nearby offensive chambers.  ***BOOM!***  My marines held their ground as the first alien appeared around the corner to defend the hive.  ***BOOM!***  The resource tower died with a sickening squelch as a level1 was riddled with LMG bullets.  ***BOOM!*** The offensive chambers, already weakened by the siege's considerable splash damage, shuddered and died.  Another alien appeared and fell to the combined fire of two LMGs and the sentry turrets.

And then... nothing.  I suddenly realized that the siege, which I had been forced to pull back a bit to avoid the OCs, was not within range of the hive.  It rotated idly, searching for another building in range and finding none.

I quickly explained my blunder to my marines, and dropped a second siege turret about 10 feet closer to the hive.  Yes, only 10 feet - that's how barely I had misjudged the range.  But the aliens were respawning, and this new siege turret was far enough forward to not be under the protection of the sentry turrets.  My marines, building as fast as they could, fell to the Skulk's attack, and were followed shortly thereafter by the incomplete siege turret.

As my marines respawned in base and I dropped a few weapons and structures for them, I jumped over to the Cargo hive.  There was only one sentry turret left, and as I watched it disappeared in a cloud of smoke and a spray of sparks.  The siege turret was next, and finally the turret factory itself.  An early victory had slipped through my fingers... but I didn't dwell on it; there were other ways to beat these demons, and we'd do it somehow.

    ---
Sadly, the server crashed before the game ended... I was gladdened, however, when MonsieurEvil (who had been on the alien team) let me know just how close we had been to winning... if the siege had been in range, it would have been all over.  It was gratifying, at least, to know that my plan had been sound.

But then, battle plans last until the first gunshot is fired, it's said... and a brilliant plan doesn't win a fight - only brilliant execution.

    Nice story coil.

    Question:
Is there some  other way to see the range of a turret (siege or sentry) than try&error ?
  • Cork2Cork2 Join Date: 2002-07-10 Member: 905Banned
Yes indeed. Let me ask this is it hard to be a commander? Is it easy to learn? It sure sounds fun.
  • FreemantleFreemantle Join Date: 2002-06-16 Member: 783Members
    coil is gewd!
Question 2: You mention the alien buildings "shuddering". When a seige cannon goes off, does the air ripple with the sonic shockwave? or did you just throw that in for effect?
  • humbabahumbaba That Exciting Tales From the Frontline Guy Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 86Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
Oh, it ripples. and the buildings do actually shudder. They wince and stuff. Its pretty cool.
  • BattousaixBattousaix Join Date: 2002-06-25 Member: 822Members
Cool, they shudder =D, and coil, about the last lines, withouth a good plan you are pretty much screwed =).

turrets display a range after dropping them (I believe)... however, you can't see the range until it's placed.  The main reason I missed with that siege, actually, is because it was my first time commanding in a new build in which the siege range was decreased.  ):  You learn to judge the ranges pretty quickly.

Commander mode is tricky, mostly because your troops are much higher-maintenance than in your typical RTS.  I mean, they complain about suicide missions!  It takes getting the hang of, and I lose far more often than I win.  Some of the playtesters are exceptional commanders, however.

I really need to get my commander mode keys bound.  (:

uhh what makes you think there are crashes?
  • SurgeSurge asda4a3sklflkgh Join Date: 2002-07-14 Member: 944Members
I'm scared to be commander, for fear of humiliating (or being humiliated in front of) my team. I mean, everyone will say "You have to start someplace".... but.... it's kind of hard to say that to the commander when they're the cause of you losing.

Just because the server crashed does not mean anything.....

It might not be the code.  It could have been just the server's fault.  Like on the TFC server I play on, sometimes it crashes during a spamfest, after a map is trying to change, or we vote to play 2mesa3.

So, it could also be the server, not the code.  Maybe they should try several different servers too.

A double post is much less shame then a spam.

Aaah, stories. 91 pages worth, now that's what I'm talking about! We need a compilation of this stuff sometime. The one right now is old.

  • MotherGooseMotherGoose Join Date: 2002-03-12 Member: 308Members, Constellation
Well, I haven’t posted in a while, but after spending the last hour or so reading all these stories, the excitement just got the better of me. Then it got me thinking, and a few questions arose.

1st, are the play tests conducted with friendly fire on? Because I can just see a lvl 1 jumping straight into the centre of a squad of nervous marines, then pouncing off snickering, as the marines unload  <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/asrifle.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='::asrifle::'><!--endemo-->  their clips into each other.

2nd, what is being implemented to stop cheaters?
The main reason I don't play games online is because of cheats. I would hate for my first official NS experience to be ruined by a bunch of idiots with wall hacks.

3rd, this is not really a Question, but I thought it still needed to be said:
Congratulations and a very heart felt thankyou, to everyone involved in making this mod, to all the mappers (especially  Merkaba and ken20banks), the artists and the rest of the dev team, as well as the hard working Monse and all the loyal play testers.
NONE of this could have happened without the ongoing support and dedication that that you guys (and girls?) have shown.
And lastly, to Flayra. A man with what seemed like an impossible dream. A man who has, with the help of the above mentioned people, created more than just a game, he has created an experience like no other. I hope to be playing NS for many years to come. All I can say is thankyou for not giving up, and not letting obstacles stand in your way, and showing a 19-year-old guy that you can accomplish what you dream.
