    i bet in two thirds of all NS games ill ever play, ill be in heavy armor, heavy machine gun, and enough ammo to ride out the end.

    aliens can see all structures at all times?
    hmmm that annoys me if it's true, that mean the marines can't make a secret secondary base.  and a lot of tactics of setting up mini phase bases are now useless.
  • UnknownUnknown Join Date: 2002-06-12 Member: 759Members
    I believe you read it wrong.  Alines can only see their buildings.  They only can see Marine buildings if another alien can see it.

    Don't worry hum, I'm a defender.  That will almost never work if I'm on the alien team. <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->

    Aliens see their friends and hives all the time. If something like a tower or chamber comes under attack, it shows up to all the aliens until it either dies or stops being attacked.

    Also, any marines in sight of aliens show up to all other aliens. If a marine is parsited, he is shown all of the time until he dies to the aliens.

    Marine buildings can also be parasited.

    Ooh, cool story Hum. I'll have to remember that tactic for later use <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->.

    Now we've just got to figure out a way to make all those people in the pub servers follow direction enough to make it work. Oh well, I suppose with every good tactic, in real life or in games, there is a huge amount of pressure put on the competence of the team.

    OMG this mod looks so sweet, thank god I just noticed it now when its near release!

    Finally a mod that is actually gonna emphasize teamplay. I hate CS and TFC and DoD because people are llamas always taking on entire teams alone.

    This is really brilliant, the commander feature is utter genius. Sounds like its not very lag proof though...

    Other then that, w000000t!!!

    Actually, from what I've heard, the code that Flay uses to minimize the effects of lag is very good. Although it is true that there are an extra-large amounts of entities and translucent effects...

    I've been following you guys for awhile, but I didn't want to post until now.
    Don't delete the stories. This is one of the most interesting threads I've read in many mods, and it'd be a shame to lose it (I also get the feeling its something of a resource for the fan-fic folks[say that 3 times fast..]). On the other hand, it is rather lengthy, so if you are going to pare it down, why not just save the stories? If you cut out the responses and distill it down to the in-game accounts it'd still be amazing.
    Speaking of fan-fic, where are the remaining 5 days in Sanji?! I'm looking forward to that almost as much as the rest of the mod!
    Thanks for reading, hope you agree.
    Cheers <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

    First off, welcome to the forums! 2nd of all, on the first page, I try and keep a mostly up-to-date .doc of just the stories in it. I just updated it today, so check page #1 for a link to download if you want. Glad to see another eager fan! <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

    Parasites CAN be used to give advantages to marines. How?

    Marine A has been parasited, Marine B knows the map very well so he finds a room where Marine A can stand alone, but in a way so the Aliens will come and try to kill him, when the aliens are approaching him, Marine B, C etc. jump from hiding places around Marine A and overwhelms the Aliens.

    Bang! The Marine with the parasite has been an advantage and has actually used the Aliens own weapon against them. A simple ambush using a single marine as a lure. The only problem is finding a server where the team can coordinate well enough for something like that.

    Yup, in playtest, there is usually a quick exchange like "We're going to the Wastes hive? OK, I'm parsited, I'll go pester em at sateliite". <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->

    Good stories, loved Hida's lucky teleport.
    Also loved hearing the marine tactics, its nice to see how the enemy mind works.
    The thing I loved the most though is that two experienced marines ambushed a Fade and died <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

    Well, we spawned in NS_Eclipse, and joined up... and suddenly, all the marines said "coil, you're commanding."  I'm not a frequent commander at *all*; I have trouble dividing my attention like that, and I'm not great at strategizing.  However, the playtesters have been discussing that it'd be good if we were all semi-capable commanders on release (to provide guidance on the pubs), so I've been trying it a bit more this weekend.  I hopped into the chair.

    Eclipse is *huge*.  I mean it's really big.  I decided to keep skimpy on the base defense for the beginning of the game, saving my RPs to get a second resource node and trusting my marines (with an armory for restocking) to keep the aliens at bay.  So I had one stay behind, and the other three set off to the nearest node, which they built and set up two turrets to defend.  With a few RPs in the bank, I then built turrets to strategically protect my base - two turrets only, which could each see one side of the Infantry Portal and Command Console.  Base secure, it was time to take a hive.

    We headed east, to the maintenance hive, where we encountered minor resistance.  After destroying the alien node (I love destroying alien nodes, because they're expensive!), we built our own, a phase gate, and some turrets.  Unfortunately, we were coming under attack pretty heavily when Grendel suddenly called for my attention; he'd found the south hive built, but empty and undefended.  Seizing the opportunity, I built a turret factory, two turrets to defend it, and then a siege turret nestled against the wall.  As the hive's groans of pain began calling to aliens all across the map, Grendel built a phase gate and two more turrets, a nice solid setup protecting this outpost from all directions.  My marines started phasing through, and soon enough the hive had fallen to the siege's relentless attacks.

    It was off to the Command hive, now, in the southwest corner of the map.  While we'd been taking down the south hive, though, aliens had destroyed my meager defenses at the Maintenance hive; I knew it was only a matter of time before that one came online, but I also knew I was in a better position to attack the Command hive, from my forward base in the south hive.  Grendel, once again, was my forward scout, setting up a turret factory, two turrets, and starting the siege before succumbing to what seemed like a veritable FLOOD of aliens.  Too late for Grendel - but not for the siege - the cavalry arrived, setting up two more turrets, finishing the siege, and holding off the aliens while the siege shredded the hive.  A phase gate finished off this outpost as well, linking both captured hives with the marine start.

    There was only one hive left... (to be continued!)

    (continued!)

    Remember when I said that Eclipse is huge?  Well, trying to get a group of marines from the Command hive to the Maintenance hive is a perfect example of just HOW huge it is.  The aliens had a lot of resources now, and we were running into resistance - in the form of turrets and defensive healing chambers - all over the map.  Lerks were chipping away at my siege turret outposts - if one of those went, a hive would be up in short order!  I had to get my marines organized, but they were fighting individual battles all over the map.  One failed assault on the Maintenance hive almost became a LOSS for us when a Fade showed up in the main base and started hacking into the Command Console!  I logged out, and I and two other marines managed to kill him... the console had dropped to about 1/8 of its full health.  So close to victory, and I could feel it slipping through my fingers.

    I recalled all my marines to base, practically telling them to type "kill" in their consoles if it would get them there any faster.  I then sent marines with welders to repair the buildings at each outpost while I researched Heavy Armor.  Grendel wandered the map, putting up resource towers for me wherever he found one.  Grendel likes doing his own thing... but he does it well, so for the most part I keep him supplied.  (:

    Finally, I dropped 3 HMGs, a Grenade Launcher, a shotgun (for Storm, who won't use anything else), two welders, and 5 suits of heavy armor at the main base.  My marines suited up and headed southeast, towards the hive.  The welders kept all the heavy armors fully repaired, the grenadier took out outposts as they encountered them, and soon my squad was overlooking the imposing maintenance hive.  They opened fire on the hive, shredding it as only multiple HMGs can.  It fell, and I dropped a turret factory, two sentries, a siege, and a phase gate in the entrance.  They weren't getting this hive back easily.

    Why did I bother?  During the arduous fight to the hive, an enterprising Lerk had finally taken out my defenses at the south hive, and a new hive came to life practically as the Maintenance hive fell.  My squad of HAs began the slow trek down to the south hive, finally working around to where the very first siege had set up.  With all others defending against the alien onslaught, a single marine built me a phase gate.  Resupplied with ammo, health, new weapons, and other goodies, I told my marines to just go for it.  No finesse, no stealth, no strategically placed siege turret... this was just our weaponry against the alien menace.

    They rounded the corner and opened fire on the hive.  Bullets and spikes flew everywhere; Skulks and Lerks growled and screamed as they attacked, fell back, killed my marines, and fell themselves to the hail of bullets.  Grenade explosions half-obscured the entire scene for me, watching from above, as I dropped health and ammo for my marines, fighting and dying to save humanity from the alien menace.  Finally, the hive let out a guttural groan, sagged, and died... The battle was over.  The alien advanced had been halted.  My marines congratulated each other, dusted themselves off, and headed back to base, ready for their next assignment.
