I just wanted to chime in right quick with a note; I posted a bit ago that my game world suddenly eroded away on me and had experienced MAJOR issues after the most recent Stable update. As much as it frustrated me having to start over again before reaching the DRF, I got the Subnautica itch and finally decided to start the game over fresh again...

The game is running beautifully now and everything so far seems to be great! My world loads seamlessly now with very little hitching, and my Exosuit/Seamoth HUDs show off the current changes - before I restarted they still had the original "bland" layout. So I guess it was a combination of the file being Experimental and then forced over to Stable, and stuff just didnt update properly after the Stable update (which the files have usually carried over fine in the past).

If anyone is having issues at this point, I *highly* recommend trashing any previous saves and deleting the savefile/folder and cache, and maybe this will help you out like it did me... I mean, the game is running as well as when the devs implemented the experimental Experimental optimizations.

So uh... I know I don't have any saves left in Subnautica, but I have made a bunch before and my game runs way slower than it used to, when I first got it. How do I delete the savefile/folder and cache? It sounds like it sure helped you out! Will it mess with Subnautica at all?

If you're playing on PC, head to the folder on your hard drive at "Steam\steamapps\common\Subnautica\SNAppData\SavedGames" and just delete everything in that folder named "slot####" if you want to wipe out everything at once (including the cache). If you want to clear just the cache, then delete all of the "baked-batch-cells-#-##-#.bin" in the respective slot#### folder. Be advised, while this will make your gameplay much smoother and faster, it will effectively reset the status of stuff in your world: resource nodes will respawn, fish locations could change (Stalkers or Gasopods may appear where they didn't before), and scanned fragments will reappear again. PDAs/Databoxes will also reappear, but they won't give you a second notification upon picking them up again.

Mind you, what I did and why it helped me was likely because my previous savefile was corrupted because I had shifted it from Experimental to Stable (not really a great idea) and then trying to force it to an updated Stable version. I can't guarantee it will help improve framerate, although excess bloat from multiple save files on the system *could* have an impact on gameplay somehow (maybe from having to maintain data for all of the saves?)

Will things like fish locations not change at all if I do this and have no current saves? I don't want any of my future saves being junked up...

Did the cuddle fish update include any optimization? Anything major?

It does include some optimizations, but we want to hear what people think how the game is now running for them.

It's not. I haven't been able to get Subnautica to stay running for more than 90 seconds - 2 minutes (new game or old save), since Cuddlefish dropped. Crash to desktop 100% of the time new terrain loads (you move more than a meter or two from your spawn point or leave your lifepod at all other than to stand on top). You broke something serious, and there are other folks in the Bug Forums on Steam with similar problems.

And that's after verifying / deleting cache, reinstalling, etc. And forcing DX9, without which the game never loaded. Old Win7 machines that don't meet the recommended just can't play anymore, now? Would be nice if you updated the minimum specs, then... and maybe a refund. Just saying.

    I'm not sure I understand...
If your rig just barely and/or didn't meet the requirements before now, then why did you purchase the game to begin with?

That's like knowingly buying an empty box of cereal from the store, then complaining when you get home that there's nothing in the box.
    smh

    @orobouros
Old Win 7 machine? Make sure that's updated, especially with you having to force DX9 to load -- older version of Win 7 didn't have DX11, which the game normally runs on. Update Windows. Update your graphics drivers. Try running without force DX9. Post back either way.

Always had to force DX9, well, since some point not too long after the Habitat Update. Previous behavior was the game always hung at the starting splash screen, pre-menu, if you didn't force DX9. Remember when they first added the little circle because load times were so long you really couldn't tell the difference between a game that had hung and one that just needed 10 minutes more to launch because the splash screen was completely static? That was right after I learned to force DX9 to avoid every launch just hanging. Now it just crashes to desktop if you don't.

I'm as up-to-date as I can get. There haven't been new drivers for the Radeon 6700 cards in almost 4 years, so there isn't really anything I can do there. Can't afford to buy a new card every couple years, and I'm currently stuck in a low-income period with a machine past its retirement date.

Normally (he said as if he bought games regularly, which he doesn't) I'd use the Steam refund window if something doesn't run well or at all, but Subnautica's performance has always been pretty reasonable, especially for an un-optimized Alpha title. Framerate dips, terrain pop-in, but that's about as bad as it got. Crashes and stutter were pretty rare. Even load times got a lot better.

Just spent a lot of time playing and waiting for the full experience, so I'm a little bitter that I apparently don't get to experience it despite paying for it and meeting the requirements. I figured I'd always have pop-in and framerate dips. I just didn't think I'd no longer be able to play AT ALL.

Keep your eyes open for sales -- you can get decent cards for cheap. I got an R7 360 for $48 after $10 instant and $30 mail-in rebate, and it can run Crysis on High, as well as Subnautica on either recommended or max settings (can't remember, but it looked good and performance was smooth). It was an XFX Core Edition variant.
