I was escorting some bozo to somewhere and the route happened to go past a giant camp, cue him running straight up to the nearest pair of giants and trying to punch them in the knees.

They both thwomped him with their clubs and he kind of just rocketed off into the sky.

I found him after the battle about a hundred metres away, in a heap.

    Dozy sod.

Protip for getting smithing points: Buy all the iron ingots you can (the weapon shops always have 10+) plus just as many leather strips. Create iron daggers like mad, enjoy ebony/dragon/glass armor halfway or so into the game.

I also heard someone enchanted an entire set with "fortify smithing" and got like 400 armor rating on deadric chest. He claimed master difficulty wasn't hard enough anymore.

another good way of grinding smithing is leather, just make leather bracers they use the least leather but you get the same lvl boost per item, huge or small!

    DOUBLE POST INCOMIIINGGGGG

so uuuh, could you uuh get a macro controller and uuuh chop wood while you sleep and then walk up to the dude and sell it honest pay for honest work???

Pretty sure the dude isn't treated like a merchant, so he should have unlimited funds?

OR you could use console commands to just give you the money. Sadly, that would be cheating.

Or, you could create iron daggers and hide bracer and enchant them, selling them for 500-1000 gold a piece, making enough to buy more iron ingots and leather strips and make plenty of money.

Creating expensive items has never been a problem in Skyrim/Oblivion for me. Selling them however, is much more difficult.

The craft & enchant option is less attractive because that will level two skills at half the speed. As I suspected with my first character, Skyrim rewards those who stick to a narrow set of skills and don't deviate too much, especially not into non-combat-related skills. My second character has all but confirmed this, as I can now handle with relative ease challenges that would have been nearly impossible for my lizard wizard.

Also what Quaunaut said. This problem goes all the back to Morrowind, and probably even earlier than that. You simply can't sell if merchants don't have the money to buy. GETTING expensive items to sell is comparatively easy.

Actually, getting smithing and enchanting is downright amazing.

I maxed them, and made myself (and improved) a full set of dragon scale armour (I use light), and a Daedric sword. Enchanted it all, and now I deal little under 190 damage with that sword.

I considered beginning to level (and put perks into) alchemy as well, to get smithing and enchanting bonusses from it. I could also make a smithing outfit to help my smithing even more - that could probably turn into even more ridiculous levels of damage and armour rating.

I find wizarding much easier if you learn healing hands and keep your companion alive. Otherwise yeah, you need lots of magicka potions, max magicka points and constant warding or you die in seconds.

The primary appeal of wizarding is that they're actually the most mobile characters.

Run around like a pansy and use flames to keep things set on fire, you don't need to keep firing it, just use it in bursts so the npc stays on fire, they burn to death fairly easily.

I went through about 20 levels using just flames, really, and burning everything to death, and running away all the time.

What's the benefit of doing smithing? can't you find anything you'd want to craft?

You can improve the stuff you find beyond their default stats. Let's say you find an awesome endtier deadric armor, it has 100 AP. With smithing and the related perks you can upgrade it to 120 AP, already enchanted or not. Now apply this to all your equipment and the fact that every improvement increases the sell price as well. Even unique items can be upgraded.

It's also cheaper and faster (depending how fast you level it) than downright buying it. Especially if you mine and smelt the ore required instead of buying it off the smiths.
  • lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
Smithing has meant two things for me: I got a full suit of orcish armour a lot sooner than I would otherwise have, and all my armour and weapons are a lot better than they would be at their unimproved state.

No idea if anyone else is having this problem, but sometimes achievements don't update? For example, I have bought a horse but I don't have the achievement. I've also completed more than 10 side quests, that's not updated.

    :(

I am annoyed by a bug that is so typical of Bethesda that I'm surprised that I'm surprised by it.

The heavy armour tree has a perk that gives you 25% bonus armour if you wear a matching set of armour (full steel, full dwarven, etc.). This perk doesn't work for ebony armour, probably because Bethesda forgot to make one or more pieces of it part of the set. This means that despite the higher base stats of ebony armour, a full set of orcish armour is worth more protection than a full set of ebony. Sigh, Bethesda. Sigh.

And of course I didn't figure this out until AFTER I crafted that full set of ebony that I had so been looking forward to. :(

Daw, lolfighter. Go kill some hagren for deadric hearts so you can get the superior deadric set instead.

In other news, I finally found another companion besides Lydia \o/ (she hangs around my un-decorated house, giving me honor as I go to bed). However, the new 2hand female fighter "Mjoll" isn't as quiet as Lydia, and only has like 5 lines she repeats TOO OFTEN. She also does not like to be remade into a stonewall tank with shield so instead of using the only melee available she prefers to use the bow until someone has smacked her around a bit. It's really annoying because she has like a total of 65% in "block more damage" which goes to waste somewhat in every battle.

Protip: You can kill (get) the ore from oreveins by literally smacking it with your pickaxe instead of pressing use. This method is much faster.

I don't know what those are (no don't tell me, I'm sure the revelation will make my mind fart rainbows or something) and I don't have that much smithing skill. Yet. I wanted to pace myself and enjoy my ebonics for a little while. :<

Yaargh, been "blocked" from progressing with the main quest fairly early on: slayed my first dragon, been told to visit some dudes up in the mountains, but there's 2 giants blocking the path. They can get me in 2 hits. And yes I saw them launch my companion 1,000 feet up in the air kekeke.

Use bows or magic and stay out of their range, they take a lot of hits but aren't very nimble, you should be able to dodge them easy enough.

going to tell my buddy about the oremine protip

Dragon armor is coooool LF, ebony is for suckers, and yeah it's a got a little less rating than Daedric, but it's lighter

    and just as cool

    except no dragon weapons :(

my buddy shouted for a dragon and it came and ate the guy who was giving him problems, it was glorious

the NPC tried to step to the dragon who promptly screamed fire and then snapped him up and shook him around
