As with above, potentially spoils.
*goes back to playing Skyrim*
If all else fail I just turn into a werewolf and beat the living ###### out of everyone I can see and feast on their bodies to further keep up my rage all while getting nothing for it in skillpoints.
P.S. The finisher move is really retarded. I've been instant killed by an orc when at full health while his previous powerattacks attacks only took like 1/3 of my hp. It seems awfully random and I rarely get crits that allows me to take a tough half hp left enemy with a single blow.
I also have like, 12 dragonbones waiting for me to grind up my blacksmith skill to 90 :/
Anyway, I had to start over because my character became unplayable. I tried to play a lizard wizard but with a bit of sneaking thrown in there as well. So my standard approach was to sneak (sneak) my way in there to try and backstab (one-handed weapons) someone in the hopes of killing them so I could reanimate them (conjuration) to have an ally in the coming fight where I'd mainly use the Firebolt and Flames spells (destruction) and heal myself (restoration) when necessary while using shield spells (alteration) to protect myself. Outside of combat I made a lot of potions (alchemy) mainly to sell for money (they were poor in quality anyway), I also made rings (blacksmithing) to enchant (enchanting) in hopes of getting something useful out of that eventually, and I sold huge amounts of loot (speech) to amass lots of wealth, much of which I got from various locked chests (lockpicking).
End result? I was spread across eleven skills, several of which contributed marginally or not at all to my combat ability, and suddenly I was at level 20 and no skill except sneaking had even reached 50. Suddenly bandits (not to mention draugr) had more health than I could drain before my magicka ran out, which got really interesting when I faced entire groups of them. I simply gave up - the game assumes that a level 20 character should be able to handle things that I just couldn't handle, and every fight was a struggle to survive and was no fun.
So now I've re-rolled and I'm keeping my focus narrow - to boring, practical things like one-hand, heavy armour, blocking, archery, and restoration. Maybe some smithing. And I won't be able to avoid leveling speech and lockpicking, although I wish I could increase those skills without them increasing my level.
Bethesda's intention with completely removing skill selections was to let people dabble more, but I think it has had the opposite effect. Now you have to consider whether you can AFFORD to dabble in that skill, because if it's going to increase your level without increasing your combat abilities you simply risk that the enemies outpace you and suddenly you have to struggle just to catch up, if that's even still possible.
so.... ###### awesom
and then some random bull###### arrow hits me again right in the face, killing me with full health,
or some ice spike from behind, right up my butt, wth
still awesome
I think my main problem is that they just can't bring back the wonderful feeling of playing morocrack for the first time....
My poor character is only level 14 but she's spread across 9 or more skills as I've just kinda been trying everything that comes to hand in little bits and pieces. Most of the time her bow is serviceable but sometimes I'll come across an enemy that makes me feel like I'm firing foam darts :o
Gah... After reading all this I'm pondering whether to start again with a more focussed character, now that I have a rough idea how various stuff feels XD
Why do sewer rats suddenly become wererats just because I levelled up?
Ah well.. nevermind. I've been playing too many old school games (megaman X etc.) and am kinda missing the challenge in all those new games... yeah I know exploring stuff is pretty awesome in Skyrim... but at the end of the day it's not how good you can control you char, but how you've planned him and his numbers vs. the enemy numbers and/or abuse AI/pathing....
I think I'm just getting old. :(
Wouldn't that be neat.... instead of simply making enemies stronger by giving them + levels, they would keep their level but just be cleverer.... by working as a team, using their weapons/spells more effectively/differently/ambushes....
Honestly... it sucks that AI programming is the hardest thing about games.
yeah.. like.. i run away from a couple of cave bears, bump into a giant killing a mammoth just when the shadow of a dragon flying right above you appears, dragon lands, attacks everyone, i just keep running, a wild sabrecat thing appears, and wants to play with the cool kids as well ignores me totally, i just stand there watching them fight each other. suddenly mammoth stands on dragons back attacking it from above, dragon takes off, mammoth still riding it, flying some circles, it was out of sight for a moment when suddenly a mammoth falls from the sky
this
and nothing to record hilarious crap like that
I imagine I would emphasis heavy armor, one arm weapons, magic (destruction / revitalization). Smithing is something I find cool cause you can improve stuff you find, it's about the only other thing I would sink lvl points into. The goal I guess is to walk around in full Daedric and or Dragon armor.
my character name is going to be the space symbol
[edit]
oh yeah and at least a lvl of speechcraft, I figure 10% of prices and +10% for selling prices thought the game would eventually add up
I've basically said 'eff you' to the main story line and have been doing whatever I want. Right now im in mage school doing those quests... next I'm thinking about joining the dark brotherhood (assassin guild) or maybe those mercenaries in Whatever-hold. I'm honestly not even sure what the main story line is.. probably killing those dragons... the side quests are so in depth.

This is how you are supposed to play TES games.
Wander around doing whatever you damn well please. Exploring, joining guilds, finding cool stuff, finding all the amusing stuff laying around, etc etc etc.
Indeed, I did just that, sidequesting before main quest.
Ended up knowing a lot of shouts but not being able to use them because I hadn't killed a single dragon.
If you level up non combat skill before combat skills you'll end up for example being an awesome smith with brilliant armor and weapons but doing little damage because of the lack of skills with weapons.
Not only that but you end up being high level with low combat skills, so creatures will be high level WITH high level combat skills. Ruh-oh.
Shouts are rather awesome I say:

Edit:
Creature interaction can get quite interesting:

After the lackluster Oblivion and Fallout 3, my hopes for Skyrim was dim. But not anymore alright.
It is exactly like playing Mw again, only 10 times better and immersive.
This infuriates me and shows they are doing a oblivion again with preview videos.

I've had it bite a guy and fling him around, and shot one down so it crash lands in a big trench, but not seen it pick things up when it swoops.
But then I am also kinds glad as that looked reallly bad in the preview video.

I really rather hope FUS RO DAH becomes a meme, I want to see the photoshops it produces, also I like the idea of solving all problems by yelling at them so hard they fall over.
I was gonna do a little bit of main, but mostly WHATEVA I WANT

Superb.
The worst thing with a bounty isn't paying it off with blood or gold, it's that they ALWAYS take all your stolen ###### as well. Stupid guards and their item hivemind. I don't suppose they only take stolen stuff which was taken within their own area? It's global right?
