It all depends how the playtests go. Obviously they won't ship it if there are still big issues with the build, and as of Friday, there still were. It's getting close though. Glad everyone got a little preview from NS2HD. The new infestation, medpack/ammo/weapon icons, and the sounds are quite awesome. It's also much more playable with all the great bug fixes that went into the patch.
Obraxis hit it on the head with his post. The amount of effort from the play testers finding bugs and UWE fixing them on 186 is remarkable for such a small team. Coming from someone that was once a non play tester like a lot of you, it can be frustrating waiting for a new build. I just want to let you all know, UWE is putting in as much effort as they can to make 186 a solid build to begin implementing the content you are all wanting. What good is an onos if the animations are not complete?; what good is mineshaft if it isn't complete and optimized for performance?; what good is having a map cycle on servers when their is only 1-2 maps playable? Just try to understand the UWE is not trying to neglect you all, they are trying their best to release playable builds that we all enjoy playing/testing on.
Build 186 is very close with very few lingering bugs that can turn into game breaking bugs if release prematurely. We don't want another similar to the one with the skulk bite exploit do we? The play testers are working overtime to find the causes to help UWE eliminate these game breaking bugs once and for all. I forsee 186 this week as long as all the remaining bugs are resolved and confirmed fixed, but as you all know, nothing is set in stone. We all want to publicly play on a new build and I believe we will very soon.
I hope this helps relieve some tention for some of you. UWE is doing everything they can to get this (amazing) new build out to the public, I can promise you that they are not holding it back to torture you all ;)

Me thinks they're really getting this build into good shape so the NS2HD tournie guys will have a solid build to play with while they're working on implementing bigger features for 187. A pretty good idea.

It appears they are more focused on getting the Onos in a build before the Exoskeleton. But to answer you question, we will just have to wait and see what the future holds for us ;)
Even if 186 had perfect performance and no bugs, im not sure i would find it any more interesting to play at this point, that may sound bad but there's a real lack of variety, we need to start seeing a growing number of maps being rotated on servers, i think this should become a priority soon or we'll keep losing interest and have empty servers, the maps issue had been neglected for far too long.

They have 2 other maps ready (or almost) but they're waiting for the occlusion culling improvements because right now they are unplayable.

I'd say not so good if I had to guess, but there is currently a playtest. Most issues are resolved, but there's a couple left that affect gameplay greatly.

It's not so much the bugs and gameplay issues that are holding up the release at this point, it's that we are trying to get the performance back up again, before we release 186. So, not sure when we'll be able to patch, but definitely not today.

Yes, while for a very small few, keeping performance the same will be acceptable, the majority of the community needs a performance boost, and is actually expecting it in 186. If 186 is a base even build, with regards to the FPS we can expect, I hope 187 is the performance patch this game needs.
(I know the game bottlenecks FPS with regards to the network code in some regard(s).)
Yeah, I was under the impression there would be significant performance enhancements made. I love NS but it's really hard to play at 11-13fps - and its particularly hard to swallow that level of fps when every other game I have runs splendidly (The Witcher 2, for example, runs and looks fantastic). I really hope significant gains in performance are forthcoming because otherwise I won't be able to play.

..But better another weekend without b186 than a new build with worse performance as b185.
