ok i need to stop looking at these for a bit, there's a few that i need to rework, but it's not a bad collection for now, anybody know when the deadline is?
We dont have one, but i guess... IT would be nice to have them in 162 which will hit sometime next week - if we got very very lucky even Monday! (depends on the difficulty of bugs they have to fix)
Decided to go for a style half between the pixel art style (so you can tell one structure from another when close by) and the silhouette style that I first developed.
I'm wondering if perhaps the eggs should be 'really' small. Because you can have 10+ around the higher tiers. As for the Fade, he is a pesky blighter.
All the alien offense chmbers are from the side, I don't want to apply that to any others. I'll have a further go with the Fade though, because I keep hearing concerns :P
Oh as for the icons looking 'better', I sort of compromised on aliens having a certain biological look, where as the marines look more 'digital' - harsher pixels.
But they all read really well (especially marine upgrades) and that is better than turning it into a work of art that you have to take longer to decipher.
Ah i missed to add, still while there is room for improvement your icons atm fit best to the map art style. (You are my winner :P - at least for now ^^ dunno what the rest is up to)
Done for tonight, I'll probably finish and tweak the rest tomorrow. Pretty happy with them.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> Like a Minigame, <img src="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/style_images/tsa/folder_post_icons/icon12.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" /> it! I like the ones from <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?showtopic=112468&view=findpost&p=1826361" target="_blank">supernorn</a>.
Perhaps the characters could be a bit smaller, though.

I LOVE the size of these icons for use in commander view. Standouts are the hive icons, power node (love the green/red status), alien RT. I don't like the upgrade symbols on the command chairs as its fairly confusing. I prefer the actual marine icon to a triangle, but its more personal preference.
The command centers look awesome, and I like the way you indicate upgrade status (L2, L3 is easy to read and understand plus a C for occupied station). The empty RT icons and player icons should be reduced (at least in the comm view) to the size that Xvisions uses. The jetpack marine icon could use some tweaking to make it easier to see that he has a jetpack (maybe little blue flames under him, or a small "J" to test out?)
The dead marine icon is also confusing (should just use crossbones like NS1).
You should put these in a mockup like supernorn and Xvisions has to see how they compare. I like your alien structures but I can't decide between the top down version of the RT like Xvisions uses, or the side view of the structures.
Overall I like the style of Supernorn's the best with some of the additions that Xvisions uses (power nodes, alien RTs) and little tweaks like adding that yellow "direction pointing" indicator for all the marine and sentry icons. I think Supernorn's size is good for the marine minimap, and the commander minimap should have the size that Xvisions uses, but it sounds like that's what the devs were going for anyways.
I don't even think mine are good lol. I don't really see this as a contest.. more of like.. community working together to make the game we like look good!

Supernorn, you should really try getting rid of the black in your icons. I think it's really hurting the overall feel of the icons. This is the biggest strength with Runteh's I think.
Also, Runteh, I love the arrow marine icons. Nice little callback to NS1, with updates. :)

oh and try changing the unused points dark Gray like ns1 .. at first glance they blend in with the blue and its not clear whats their status.

really great stuff in this thread. the only thing i'm worried about is that in the mockups most icons are too big. For example, having two turrets side by side is a common thing to see, perhap even with a armory, but with the current icons size that seems impossible..
here's my entry for the contest, open to suggestions for tweaking tho.
a quick glance at the map should tell you that marines with nades are hitting alien start but the commander has ordered the player to return to marine start to deal with the onos hitting the level 2 comm facility.
1) Power node icon looks a big scrunched, and should be tweaked so the electricity icon looks more like a bolt than a squiggly. 2) Fade icon looks VERY nice, and is easily recognizable. The best version I've seen yet (especially since its a difficult icon) 3) The marine/alien death icons should be changed into a skull and crossbones. Red/Green depending on the players team. 4) RT and tech point icons should remain that gray color as shown in your second picture (w/ the orange background) 5) I like the continuity between the l2,l3 icons on the alien hives like you did with the marine comm stations.
One change I would make is to now remove the "C" letter on the occupied command station/hive, and instead replace it with a yellow glowing outline that hugs the outline of the CC or hive. This way you will still know what level the hive/command station is at even if it is in use (important information).

cory, can you clarify the commander icon, will that be used next to a player's name when viewing the scoreboard, or is that to signify which cc/hive a commander is in (is it an overlay of one of the icons for L1, L2, or L3)?

I would like to see the same style you used on aliens in marine icons.(+ res node)
Or the other way around with simple forms like your arrows(marine player icons), commander, eye of sauron? and doors.
Atm it is a mix of a few styles.
Top view, side, angled, detail, simple, inbetween.
They all look good but its not fluid.
But thats just my opinion.

Stylistically there are two styles. One for Marines and one for aliens.
You have to remember this will be from two perspectives. A biological alien fighting marines, and man made hard edged marines fighting aliens.

Looking GREAT, some feedback:
