Uruguay didn't really cheat at that moment. The rules are just inappropriate in such a case. The red card+penalty is the normal answer to a field player handballing an otherwise goal-entering shot. It could be more similar to basketball, where pushing out a clear shot from its path results in points awarded for the attacking team + a foul for the defender.

True,
but both teams score usually at least 50 points in Basketball. So a single soccer goal would be more closely to 25-30 Basketball points. And I doubt that everyone would be cool if the attackers were awarded 25 points if a defender pushed a ball from a clear shot.

But if a single goal is similar to "25-30 Basketball points", why would that matter? They would only be getting the amount of points awarded for one goal...
Still I think something like this should simply be counted as a goal in combination with a red card for the offending wannabe goal keeper... It is clear that if he didn't d!ck around with the ball (pun intended) it would've gone in... But hey, don't put any logic in the game!!!

Ok, lets be a little bit more specific.
Because the impact a single scoring in soccer has is significantly higher than the impact a single scoring in basketball has, the chance of a single bad referee decision in this critical moments deciding the whole game is extremely high.
Granted in the current case it is pretty obvious that the shot would have score otherwise, but what about the long range kick that hits a player, standing inside the 16m space, on the arm? Should that be an instant goal?
I don't think so; leaving us with the question where to draw the line, if we adopted the way basketball is handling these kind of situations.
When it's clearly intentional? As was the case here? If someone would be protecting his head or torso with his hands, then ok for leniency. When the guy reaches out to stop a goal, then it's clearly obstruction. I don't think that anyone is good enough to intentionally aim for a hand from 16 meters away when the goalie is down.

Indeed, still not happy with the Netherlands lackluster attitude, after they score a leading goal though... And let's hope de Zeeuw is back in action during the final after that horrendous kick to the teeth!
Gottah love the way our little guys (Robben and Sneijder) are scoring goals with their heads :D
Who do you cut from the midfield to let Fabregas play, though? Xavi and Iniesta are certs and I think Busquets covers more ground + is more of a goal threat.
(Unless one of them is injured and I don't know it)

Right is only relative to the camera position. I've not looked that closely, but it may be different sides of the tank the camera is looking through.

A man can dream, can't he? ^^
Gah... It just doesn't work that well in English, lacking accent and flair. Cruijff rules :P
Try telling that to Ghana & Ireland.
My opinion will almost certainly differ to that of a man from Ghana.

He's a schemer- I'd say somewhere between Veron and Xavi.

He always picks the right box, but they flip the image from time to time to make it seem more random.
Fixed :P
