So, a mutant, a heretic, and a xeno walk into a bar. They get their drinks from an attractive waitress. The mutant gets up to use the restroom, and once he's out of sight of the others, he follows the waitress and gives her his best pickup line.
The mutant returns to the table with a big red handprint on his face, much to the amusement of the others. Some time and many drinks go by, and the heretic decides to take up the challenge. He leaves the table, goes after the waitress, flashes a sly grin and shoots her his best line.
The poor heretic comes back to the table with a big red handprint on his face, and they have a riot over that. Finally, the xeno decides to have his turn. He downs the drink in front of him, and with determination in his eyes, he gets up and goes to look for the waitress.
When the mutant and heretic see the xeno come back, they are surprised not only to see his face unslapped, but in his hands he holds a number scribbled onto a napkin! I'd say "cue the endless pages of unimaginative people condemning the game without knowing a single thing about it" but uh... I'm way too late for that.
As Kaine points out, there CAN be female marines... but it doesn't matter because under such heavy armour it'd be impossible to tell anyone's sex anyways.
As for the ways it could work? Personally I'd do it like this...
The game would be split into three distinct parts; 1) Towns and bases; where you can just walk about as your character and chat and go to mission briefings. 2) Recon this is where you and your squad go down to investigate, sabotague something or the like. 3) War
I'm thinking in Warhammer 40k, rather than just playing a lone character it would be more inkeeping if you played a captain or the like and had a small squad of NPCs that came with you. That way you'd be more of a 'hero' while there's still plenty of cannon fodder for people to smish.
For example if you went imperial guard you'd play a commissar and get a nice crowd of squishy imperial guard to follow you about.
Of course there'd be loner characters as well for flavour like the Eldar Scouts, Tyranid Lictors (I think a <b>lot</b> of people would play tyranids.)
I doubt the 'popularity' problem would be quite as much a factor for 40k as well. Orks are pure comedy gold in 40k so the humour would draw more people to them than the whole serious and stuffy honourable orcs of WoW. There's no Emo undead but instead aliens-inspired Tyranids and we all know how people love aliens. There was no shortage of people playing them in AvP that's for sure :3 Chaos allows people to grow claws, horns and generally be properly evil. There's just as many people out there who want to vent by being the bad guys as those willing to nicey nicey.
Keep in mind one of the big failings of the Horde in WoW is that they're not really evil, they're all hunched over and serious and nothing about them has much flair unlike 40k's darker races.
Combat would <b>have</b> to be realtime as everyone says. Doesnt necessarily have to be FPS though. I'd rather it was 3rd person. If melee was anything like PSO's for example I'd die happy. Hmm. This game could work, but I don't think it will. If it was like planetside, it'd essentially just be a re-skinned (albeit <b>awesome</b>) version of planetside. Or maybe they could mix in a few different game ideas, like instead of having loads of CR5s (as in PS), there'd be one overall leader of each faction who decides where they're gonna fight etc... (selected like Archlord? Or maybe even the same as BF2 picks it's "highest ranked commanders" or whatever). So they pick where their chapter / race is gonna fight next (instead of islands in planetside, it could be planets or whatever). Then again, a Black Legion led by "NoobPwner08" would be a bit of an immersion killer.
I don't see how it'd work as a classic MMO (like SW:G, WoW or whatever), though. Or at least, I don't see how it could work AND be faithful to the universe it's set in. Like I said earlier, a lone space marine taking a quest? Nah. That isn't right at all.
So has no-one considered the possibility of an EVE-online style game where you play a rouge trader?
That seems to me the only way you could be a human, AND go to a bunch of alien worlds, AND have the freedom to largely do what you like.
Otherwise, yeah, it is likely to be Warhammerside. Not that that's nessesarily a bad thing. The only problem I see is that in 40k, armys are balanced as a whole, not on a unit-for-unit basis. The only way I can see it working is if Imperial Guard and Orcs have no spawn timer at all (i.e, you die and instantly get back into the action) while space marines have to wait for a minute or two. That way the "horde" armies would effectively have more dudes on the battlefield at once, even though the sides are actually equal.
But then I get the impression that even if they gave them feather dusters for weapons and painted them bright pink everyone would STILL choose space marines.
Maybe let people play as IG or Orcs for free and leave the "good" races for paying subscribers <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
like I said nil, easiest way around it is for Orks and IG be captain units. If you play IG you get to play a commissar who commands a crowd of IG soldiers (kinda like a pet class on crack really) and for Orcs you get to play a Nobz with a bunch of NPC Boyz tagging along with you that you can order about :3
The commissar could even have fun abilities like shooting one of his own men to boost the moral of the rest of them or other such 40k style stuff :p

Good rambo races.
Though I agree, the game will either: 1) Suck, as the individual players are horribly imbalanced 2) Come no where near canon, and just look like WH40K and nothing else 3) Pull off some OMGWTHBBQ moves and end up with the best game ever (Gem's suggestion is a nifty idea) 4) Try to pull off something amazing and fail horrible.
Personaly I want my massivly huge Gretchin squad, something just always feels good about picking up around 20 dice for attack (true, it MIGHT kill off 3 Space Marines if I was lucky, but still!)
Maybe if it was more like Diablo or Guildwars, meaning for each battle a separate "instance" is created? Focusing wholly on PvP, with new wargear and even vehicles being accessible as you advance in the competitive ladder. Make it work like the real tabletop game, where the amount of stuff you get to have on the field is determined by the requisition cap, so Ork units are cheaper, therefore you get to have more boyz on the field at a time. SM and Necrons are more expensive, so you get less.
Maybe even make it true turn-based style, but I suppose with 40 people waiting for a turn it would go pretty old pretty fast. A force commander or whatnot giving orders would work I suppose.

A swarm of Gretchins are lucky if they can kill <i>one</i> space marine, let alone three.
Also, about this whole idea... oh but it does make me tingle thinking about a WH40k MMO! OH OH it does! Tingle all the way down to me' toes, but at the same time I have a cold sinking feeling (as many do, I imagine) that the game is going to turn out like WoW with space marines.
Reading the article linked in the OP's post, I hear that someone from NCsoft is working on this? My faith that this game won't turn out like every other MMO-Grind just collapsed =\
But... there is always the odd chance, however slim, that the game will be created with tender love and shining brilliance and come out as the best thing ever!
I won't hold my breath <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
1. MMORPG WH40K has a very rich lore even set at a very small scale, as anyone knows if they've read the books (Especially the Inquistor series). It is very possible to adapt the universe to fit into a single planet while preserving the spirit of WH40K. For example, the game could be set on a Hiveworld. Players could take roles such as Inquisitors, Tyranid Seeds (Not sure if this is the right term), Tau Water Caste, Eldar Rangers, etc... This game would play like any traditional MMORPG with a special focus on real-time, gun fighting combat. It would still retain all the lore of WH40K. Obviously, you would lose the "War" part of the game. Your favorite units would not be playable, but would make appearances as NPCs.
2. MMOFPS This would play very similarily to Planetside, except it would have a better character development and story line. Every year, WH40K hosts a huge campaign that is played out at all stores around the world. These campaigns serve to advance the storyline of the WH40K universe. After the outcome is decided, new stories and lore is recorded. Usually, almost all subsequent WH40K products incorporate the new shift. I would imagine that the MMOFPS would parallel what happens in the tabletop game, or even contribute to it. every so often, huge shifts of storyline would happen causing numerous things to change in game. With this type of game, you would be playing the tabletop game as your favorite unit.
There is one more interesting alternative I haven't seen before, but it supposedly exists in the yet to be released Huxley. In Huxley, there will be your traditional MMORPG aspects like "grinding," leveling, items, quests, etc... This all takes place inside a cityscape. However, you can also move outside the city and onto the fields, where there are squads and vehicles fighting each other. That way, you would have a miniature Planetside inside of a MMORPG...
Turn-based can work with any amount of people provided that you don't use a round-robin system but instead have all players plan their moves simultaneously, then act them out simultaneously. So instead of making your move, then having to wait for 39 players to make theirs, you get to make moves constantly. A maximum turn duration takes care of people taking too long or afk.
<!--quoteo(post=1610424:date=Mar 1 2007, 05:37 PM:name=lolfighter)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(lolfighter @ Mar 1 2007, 05:37 PM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--> Turn-based can work with any amount of people provided that you don't use a round-robin system but instead have all players plan their moves simultaneously, then act them out simultaneously. I don't see how that would work in a multiplayer setting, seeing as the enemy would then also move simultaneously with you, which would make planning attack so much harder. Sort of like in the UFO games of yore, where each character had a set number of action points would somehow work I suppose.
Then there's of course the unappealing appearance of turn-based games which would turn off all the 13 year old kids, and let's face it, the devs are out there to make money. It has to be appealing to the masses as well.
I'm a WoWer myself since release, and honestly I could use a change of scenery. This alone would sell the game to many I think, seeing as I'm probably not the only one tired of the Warriors and Wizards setting. Huxley is gonna be some competition I suppose.
Look, I REALLY have to agree with Scythe on this one. I NEVER in my life ever want to see an Adeptus Astartes say "lol." That would COMPLETELY destroy WH40K lore in one blow...
Even worse would be a Marine tactical squad acting like a bunch of CS players...bunny hopping and all.
You guys brought up the point of per-player units being imbalanced. However this could easily be fixed by making all PvP instanced, and having each instance have a "Point per side max". So if some dude wants to be a terminator, he is going to cost his side in the PvP instance like 50 points. While if another guy wants to play a gretchin (masochism anybody?) he will only to cost his side like 5 points. That way the sides are always balanced.
Infact, they could have you set up your own PvP squad of players. So when an instance opens up it puts your pre-formed "Army" of players into it. So it's like you are designing a 500 point IG army, but each unit is a friend of yours. Possibly allow you to supplement your squad by browsing other players who are currently not in a group and "recruiting" them according to the unit they are playing. So say you want some guy who can drive a basilisk to make up for one of your friends who isn't on at the time, just browse a dynamically updated listing of other players who are un-grouped and pick some random dude.
Another idea would be you set-up your ideal squad, then wait for players who are able to pilot specific units to join up with it and pick what spots they want to fill. Then once the things done, it plops you in a game against an equal point army.
"Looking for squad, 150 point Falcon pilot. Starcannon and CTM" "Looking for 200 points worth of genestealers, PST"
See what Im saying?
My ideas aside, Im not really sure what I think of this yet. Seems much to earlier to even GUESS.
Edit: <!--coloro:#FFFF00--><span style="color:#FFFF00"><!--/coloro-->Hell, with some of the sides that require more in the way of "mass" you could allow people to control an entire squad of AIs instead of requiring each guy to be player controlled. Possibly allow a hybrid of this and the other idea, so you and 5 friends can control 40+ AIs, or if you happen to have 40 friends, you can each control a guy individually.<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> NOTE: TEXT IN YELLOW IS ALL AN ORIGINAL IDEA AND ANY CREDIT NOT GIVEN TO ME IS A DOWNRIGHT INSULT.
"lol, pew pew lol" "4 teh greater good!!!1!1!!11oneone" "OMGWTH u stupid melee nOOb"
I was thinking of that too, having certain units able to be AI controlled. Cause honestly, how in the world can you find a squad of Termagants? The instanced idea works out really nicely, seeing how it would basically BE the table top game. I would like it better though if it was more of a real time global battle like Planetside though. You know what would be cool though, is that if it were your regular MMORPG, but you also have the option of going PvP in an instanced battle! That way that game could have your idea, and it would also allow tons more character development. I would rather see THAT rather than if they went pure MMORPG or pure MMOFPS
What do you guys think? Whould you want an WH40K to be MMOFPS, like Planetside, or a MMORPG, like WoW? I think if they tried to make it MMORPG, it would still work wonderfully because they have so MUCH material to draw from.

4) Try to pull off something amazing and fail horrible.
Personaly I want my massivly huge Gretchin squad, something just always feels good about picking up around 20 dice for attack (true, it MIGHT kill off 3 Space Marines if I was lucky, but still!)

1. MMORPG
WH40K has a very rich lore even set at a very small scale, as anyone knows if they've read the books (Especially the Inquistor series).
2. MMOFPS
This would play very similarily to Planetside, except it would have a better character development and story line.

For the emperor tbh.

Starcannon and CTM"
"Looking for 200 points worth of genestealers, PST"
See what Im saying?
My ideas aside, Im not really sure what I think of this yet. Seems much to earlier to even GUESS.
Edit: <!--coloro:#FFFF00--><span style="color:#FFFF00"><!--/coloro-->Hell, with some of the sides that require more in the way of "mass" you could allow people to control an entire squad of AIs instead of requiring each guy to be player controlled. Possibly allow a hybrid of this and the other idea, so you and 5 friends can control 40+ AIs, or if you happen to have 40 friends, you can each control a guy individually.<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc-->
NOTE: TEXT IN YELLOW IS ALL AN ORIGINAL IDEA AND ANY CREDIT NOT GIVEN TO ME IS A DOWNRIGHT INSULT.
"lol, pew pew lol"
"4 teh greater good!!!1!1!!11oneone"
"OMGWTH u stupid melee nOOb"
I almost wish I'd thought of it first and made two posts about it already. That would've been fab :p
