Well this thread really stoked the flames. I didn't play much of Ut or Ut2k3 (just the demo) but only because I'm not big into deathmatch. However, I was very impressed with the graphics engine. My computer is getting old (as far as gaming rigs are concerned) and I think ut2k3 ranks up there with some of the best real time graphics this old beast has ever pushed out. I noticed someone else mentioned this, and I recall getting good framerates with the details medium-low and it still looked great. Brings to mind a classic Penny Acade quote from when they first saw Doom III:
- Doom III has the most amazing engine I've ever seen. - I can't wait until somebody makes a game with it.://- Doom III has the most amazing eng...a game with it.

I might grab the demo for the occasional stress relief frag fest
(I swear I didn't type the quote like that, but I can't seem to fix it)

I've known that all along, that's why I'm getting the demo and not the full version. I hate these kind of games. Even if it's in the future, you should try and give it some degree of realism. At least NS has plausible reasons why stuff works, unlike most other FPS with their **** trance music in the background and majick (Unreal 2). The original UT did have much better bot AI than the Quake series, or so I'm told. I wonder how the hell their development team gets so much prestige when there's _nothing_ new about their ideas? Hell, if all was right in the world it would be the NS team who'd be getting all the attention over ingenuity and gameplay, not some people who rehash old ideas with new graphics.

compared to most of the stuff UT felt different and refreshing back when it came out... a lot of people had high hopes for UT2k3 to continue in the vein of UT but instead the afterbirth that Epic churned out was more like quake 3, not that quake 3 was bad but if you wanted Q3 you went and got Q3 not frigging 'UT2k3 - Quake 3 now in UT flavour' =/

Unreal Tournament has finally worked it's way up to an extremely polished, beautiful, addicting game. It has a different game mode for every single person. Personally I can't get enough of the onslaught and assault (convoy) levels...

Summed up, simply amazing. Enjoy.

Well I will admit, I DO like it. (atm )

I have played one round of conquest Vs Bots (that was all)

Weapons are the same ol same ol.
The Vehicles are fun.
It runs surprisingly well on my system (a definate plus for a game that looks like this)
Conquest if fun.
OPEN AREA MAPS! (aka, not all the maps basicaly feel the same. where as what I saw of 2K3 it was still basicaly the same map type over and over)

I still wish they had done some decent weapon recreating.
Admitedly the problem with UT is that they have stupid amounts of weapons atm and if any of them get removed people will COMPLAIN to no end ;(

I still think the weapons in the original unreal were far superior to anything in the unreal tournament series, but this game does verily rock. Somebody should take a stab at adding mechs to the vehicle code.

I played the Convoy level and a power (something level) and I can safely say it kicks ****! I've got the settings on full and running at 1280x1024 and its running well on my GF4MX. It looks really great. The addition of vehicles is nice too.

Amen, amen. Heres my things about the demo I've found:

First off, I'd like to say that while the graphics aren't "Better", the engine seems to be performing even better than it was the first time around(in which it was incredible then, now its even better). Now, for the stuff that matters to UT-ers:

The vehicles kick ****. The Leviathen is the most...coolest, vehicle ever. Its huge. And, being its a tank, with a simple switching of modes, it sets itself up as a humongous turret of death, and to say the least, will be harder than hell to take down without using teamwork.
The Scorpian buggy vehicle(that looks a lot like the warthog) has some sweet features of its own: The primary fire is this green-laser wire thing that comes out(longer the more charged it is) that wraps around vehicles and some walls, then explodes. The secondary fire brings out 2 bladed wings, that are funner than hell to slice off someones head with(only way to get past is to either jump, dodge, or duck- and with how precise this thing is, dodging and jumping are harder than-'ell, and ducking gets you close to the car itself- fun!), not to mention the jump button initiates the handbrake, that you can do some SWEET powerslides in.
The rather big truck like thing(which I forgot the name to, sadly) its fun itself. The driver is just a driver, sadly. BUT luckily, the back gunner gets a huge gun, perfect for killing anything. Chargable(but if you don't charge, 2 hits(or just 1 hit of both lazers) will kill any man, and a full charge will cripple if not outright destroy most vehicles. The sideseat has a nice cannon on it too, mainly made to take care of stragglers the main driver can't hit, as well as to give focus to where any enemies are, and slaughter them quickly and easily.

And while the vehicles(many of which in the demo I haven't even mentioned) are very strong, and a main part of gameplay on many maps, the AVRiL RPG will take many of them out in either 1 or 2 hits, in a nice fasion(and sometimes suicidal- many a time I would get a buggy at the last second, it blows up, flies in the air, and lands right on top of me). Its truly a lot of fun.

And Assault I'm sorry to say I never played in the original UT(because I only played that once....oi) and man, it is a fun mode. Now they've made it more like a single-player experience, with the intro to each map(just click to skip it) showing you what you must do(this isn't in the demo, in full version) to win the map, step by step, and(in the demo) they tell you what you must do each time you spawn, with little waypoints NS style strewn all over.

Also, my favorite new weapon, the Mine Layer, lays spider mines- nothing special, right? Well, even though they do the standard "Chase after nearby enemy", you can also just launch em out real quick, then with the alt-fire, tell them where to go(you have a limited ammo source, so you gotta keep doing that, but its fun for me to be a good ways away from a enemy base, let out 12 of the little buggers, and laser-point them in the direction of the enemy base, then about 2 minutes later, see that i get 5 or 6 kills. And while that may sound cheap, even the weakest weapon gets a mine easily in 1 or 2 hits.

Really, the only problem I see is the netcode, which is a bit laggy right now, but their polishing that nicely, so no worries there- they even mentioned in a just-released video interview their working on that, as well as some new muzzle flashes, and the such. Its great, I'm really excited about this.

A pleasant suprise, to be sure.

Perhaps it was my previous lack of broadband, perhaps my mediocre computer, perhaps it was simply fond memories of the original Unreal Tournament, whatever: I greeted UT2K3 with a lukewarm reception.

But this, this. This is fun. This is special. I like this.

It's getting bought!

rofl, soo true =P we NS junkies think alike -- I bet every one of us made the same discovery about 'caek' on our own...

as for the game itself... I'm not impressed. it's 2k3 with a few bells and whistles. the vehicles are done pretty well, but certainly not well enough to warrant getting this game if you own 2k3... I mean, if you NEED a new FPS knock yourself out, it'll probably the most technologically advanced FPS on the market til HL2 and Doom 3... but really, I'd suggest waiting to see if the mod scene for it heats up... because if it stays lukewarm like 2k3's mod scene, then don't bother... some of the weapons are cool concepts but completely useless in effect... like the car w/ the blades that come out of the side -- how often is THAT gonna come in handy? especially considering you can just run ppl over instead... and why does the game need the sniper rifle AND the lightning gun? couldn't they think of something unique and original instead of putting TWO sniper rifles in the game?
