Bah, I was just down visiting him over the weekend. I'll give him a call when I get home, see if he's up to getting back up to speed on this... as far as I knew, he'd decided that there was nothing more he could do (due to the VHE/GTK incompatabilities, and some 'optimizations' aligning textures to faces instead of to world, which makes GTK barf even worse) and washed his hands of it. Though I might be remembering a month or two ago, and he might be back in.. we were discussing compilation matters, possibly letting him snag cycles on my new machine for the final tweak compiles, if Cagey might see fit to release a Linux version of his toolset, compiled to take advantage of the Athlon64 architecture. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Might work. I've just been doing some tweaking by myself now trying to reduce the r_speeds so I can get a copy to Flayra. Anyone know what the most recent statistics have to be for a map? I.E. max r_speeds in commander view, max r_speeds player view, etc...

I've managed to decrease them a bit but I'm not sure what they need to be.

Funny you should mention it, but I just passed the p12 source to a guy who is trying to make it Linux friendly again (Merl abandoned portability a while back). I'm not sure how far he's gotten, but there will be a Linux-friendly source distribution available once he's done with fixing compatability issues (the source is and has been available for a few months now on an individual basis).

It compiles only without the FASTMATH code in hlrad

I havent tried it on anything but x86 and i thing it would be some work to make it work on a 64 bit architecture

I am trying to fix the FASTMATH code in hlrad but I am kind of low on time.

Most of it is done. They had a build done and into Flayra but r_speeds were "high" in some areas because they changed the limit with out telling anyone.

Too bad there isn't a well maintained, central, up-to-date set of mapping guidelines for Natural Selection level designers to check linked from the Mapping Forum FAQ, huh?

I really have no clue what you're talking about. The r_speed limits haven't changed since April, when I added the average numbers to the guidelines--the maximum numbers haven't changed in over a year.

Its not that they changed the limits without telling anyone.. as Cagey said the limits haven't changed in a while. Its just that.. Well, the R_speeds are too high in areas. In commander mode I have gotten 700+ and thats just too high. The engine tops out at 800 before you see a serious preformance hit. Its not like Hammer/Quark/GTKradient can tell you the R_speeds in areas before compiling. Its just something you have to go through and find for yourself.
As for Hazes question.. as far as I know its currently on its first closed beta. I think its only been played 2 or 3 times, mostly just by random people in NSPT. The over all structure is finished, now just fixing up the lighting and adding/removing stuff.

I may be a bit new to all of this - but doesn't the mapping tutorial say that it's fine as long as the commander view r_speeds don't exceed 1000?

Yes -- the artifacts in the HL engine at 800 w_poly that ANeM mentioned occur in software mode, which NS doesn't support. A level must average under 700 w_poly in Commander mode, but can peak at 1000. The guide section on resource limits is linked a few posts up.

the guidelines are a lil weird with the limits. Even though something says recommended, like the 200 entity limit, but supposidly capped at 300, hehe. Flarya wont let anything over 200, as how he explained it to me. And he said average rspeed for player should be 400 and max at 600, hmmm. I mean, i have no prob with lower limits, but let us know. Or it could just Flarya is touchy.

Alright well for commander now I have about 700 or lower as the usual r_speeds, and it tops out at 1000 in a few places. For the player, most is in the range, but I still have a couple areas that hit 800-900 and I'm having difficulty figuring out what to do to fix it...

When was this? Was it for a combat map or a classic ns map? Every time there's been a change in the past, Flay has let me know about it as soon as it's decided. I've been emailing him back and forth on a regular basis for the last month and he's never mentioned those numbers to me.

The original promise was that Lazer and team would remake nancy as good as they can, and pass it to DD. DD will make the final changes, and off nancy goes to another version of NS. And everyone rejoiced.
