who cares the r-speeds limitations anyway? in my opinion its absolutely possible to create maps that have 800 in commandermode and round 500 in first person view. and if you are skilld enough it would look more detailed than veil, nothing or origin ^^

Umm... I know my roommate cares. High r-speeds = bad fps hit on lower end machines.

One of my first maps like 3 years ago hit 1200 in places and his computer would crap right out on it. Like go from 20 fps down to 2 as soon as he hit those spots. That was just the two of us testing a cs map. Another buddy of mine can't play NS because his comp barely plays the simple maps of CS. (NS standards are a bit higher than CS too.) And getting them to buy new equipment would be great... but being students ... yeah... money is tight.

Cagey, thats what he told me when I emailed him my map a few months ago. Yes, it is confusing.

my first map, which i still have, averages at around 2000 r_speeds, it is very purdeh though. Hehe. It started out as a remake of goldeneye temple, and had many many modifications.

How on earth did I forget that?

*Bangs head on wall*

Lazer can append this to the front page I suppose.

And here is the FAQ again, brought back to the latest page for those who go straight to it. I dunno. Just felt like it.

The Nancy Project FAQ

Please read before asking questions or making suggestions!

Why don't you get the original from the author?
The original .RMF file was lost after a hard-drive failure on Devildog's computer.
This file is needed in order to make changes and compile the map.

Umm... Nancy wasn't lost... I have the 1.04 map on my harddrive... why can't you use that?
Yes, many of us have it. The problem with the old map is that it was compiled with the wrong hull file. This wasn't apparent until 2.0 came around and now Onos are stuck every time they evolve. And using /stuck is simply not adequate enough of a fix for the NS team. Plus, no balance changes were able to be made so the map's gameplay became outdated.

So why don't you just take the map, and make the changes needed?
The .BSP file is nearly useless when trying to make changes to a map. It's the final optimized version. The Nancy-Team did use it though, in two ways. The first was for reference. Taking screenshots and walking around, they were able to get a good idea of what it should look like. Second, by using a decompiler and were able to get some of the brush work back. This only made using getting the basic dimensions easier to get as decompilers are simply not very efficient and the brushwork they provide is far from optimal. While the entity work can be gotten from RIPent, this still leaves detail brushwork, texturing (a massive job on it's own) and lighting and since we don't have the lights.rad file that Devildog used, lighting is taking a bit of work as well.

Blah and Blah sucked back in the old Nancy. You should change it.
The map is going to be done as faithfully as possible to the original, at least until playtesting by the NS Team. Then, balancing changes will be made as suggested by the playtesters, developers and the original author of the map, DevilDog.

What's changed?
Major changes being made thus far are:
-New onos hull file.
-Changes to Port hive to allow Onos movement
-Added connection between the two vent "systems"
-Easier access to vents after removing "lip"
-Texture alignment issues

No-name hive! Mother hive! Which is it?
It's Mother hive. This was the intended original name. Yes, it's a piece of nostalgia lost, but you'll get used to it. You can really mess with all the silly nubcaeks and keep calling it no-name if you want. No if's, and's, or's, or but's about it. Mother is here to stay!

Can we see some screenshots?
Due to the faithful recreation, you can simply load up the old Nancy and see it there. There are a couple of rough screens of the changes to port, but none have been released of the changes to the vents. Use your imagination in the meantime. (Though for those who don't have the old version of NS, some screens of it may be posted if someone were so nice as to create them.)

Why not just release it so we all can play it! Mass playtesting!
The answer is no, for now. The team wants to have a good quality project released, not betas all over the place. The first releases will be internal to the NS team. In fact, the intention is to have it playtested there. If it's decided at some point that the map just can't cut it, then and ONLY then will it be released publicly as a "custom" map. That scenario is highly unlikley as the map has been played before.

Isn't it too late to be included in 2.1?
The map has been played before. Unlike the other "new maps", basic things are known about how it plays. The testing that needs to be done are bug testing and testing with the new gameplay. Isolating imbalances and fixing them are also on the to-do list. While some maps may need complete revisiting, Nancy (in theory) shouldn't need much. And worse come to worse, there is a very good chance it could be release as part of "2.2". Remember, NS is going to steam, and that means dynamic content! Either way, Flayra has expressed interest in getting this map back in and since he has final say in such matters...

Why isn't this thread stickied?
Stickied threads are meant to be useful. Particularly in the mapping forum. I wouldn't call the information here terribly useful (though I'm sure there is some useful stuff). It's just ... well ... ask the moderators ...

I don't feel like reading 9 gajillion pages of this thread. What did I miss?
Nothing. If it's not written in this FAQ, don't worry about it.

I don't feel like reading the FAQ. I'm going to post a question answered here anyway.
Then expect all answers to that question to point (hopefully without flammage) to this FAQ. (Hint, hint regular readers...)

Why is this thread open to the public if we aren't supposed to ask questions about it?
This thread is here so that we can all see the status of the map. It's a very communtiy oriented project really! This FAQ is merely here to answer the questions asked every couple of pages. I'm sure the team doesn't mind if you ask what the status of the map is every now and then. (Besides... we don't want this on the second page now, do we?) If you have a specific question, do feel free to ask. And do feel free to keep giving these guys the kudos they deserve! Such l337 teamwork hax!

Never ping.. everything has been completed. It is a playable, compiled map. They just have to go back and fix a few things mostly commander R_speeds in the north end of the map (around marine start) along with lighting.. because its too dark currently...
and maybe put something in the expanded part of port because its too damn empty. Maybe some computer stations on the walls?

Go to the window to the left, from marine start, hallway. If you do it correctly, you can get out there.

Yes, Wolf had fixed a bunch of the build-outside bugs that everyone had a problem with. Though he had to be reminded that they existed. Not sure if they were all solved though.

No, not yet. =-.-=

Unfortunately, I don't have a Half-Life CD currently, as I can't find it since my room-mate moved out. It probably got packed away in the cleaning frenzy, I simply don't know. :-(

Doubly-unfortunately, I don't have a working copy of Steam any longer to simply fetch or extract the files from. Previously, I had to jump through hoops to get Steam running, since I'm a Linux gamer, and I had it working, but a recent update hosed it entirely for me now. =-.-=

So, yeah... I'm pretty much a wash-out until either Steam works under Wine/Crossover Office/WineX, sadly, and can't even play NS. :-P

He doesn't need steam but he needs hl and all the wads.
Isn't plain hl $15+. Just grab one.
Also if steam was working. Doesn't store the cd key somewhere.

Another thing the cd key is in the hl dir. I think it stays after an unstall unless the folder was deleted.

Edit: Ahh cd not cd key

No CD unfortunately. I have the jewel case, and the CD-Key is on my PDA regardless along with a copy in my CD-Key logbook.

And right now, I wish I could spare $15, but I simply can't.

At this point, do what you can without me, I'm afraid. I'm out of the production loop entirely at this point, unfortunately. :-P

Actually, as a quick note, it's legal to own, create, or use an emulator regardless of if you do or do not have the original system or original games.

Possessing the ROM images without possessing an original source for them is what's illegal. Not the software that can simply run them.

Of course, the above is assuming you don't have a stupid national law like the US's DMCA that can circumvent fair use just because something is digital instead of analog.

The thing is, they already know about a lot of the problems that need to be fixed. They just need to fix them. Lazer was hoping WolfWings could do that, but unfortunately that won't happen, so Lazer will probably have to go through and fix it.

Just use Windows. I was addicted to Linux myself but then I realized it wasn't worth the trouble of running NS (no voice comm, sound issues, lower FPS) in Wine and started using Windows again. Sure I go back to Linux for IRC and web browsing but come on, Windows ain't that bad.
• TalesinTalesin Our own little well of hate Join Date: 2002-11-08 Member: 7710NS1 Playtester, Forum Moderators
Yes, it is, Chuckster. If you'd like an explanation of the thousands upon thousands of bugs and security holes that no one but Microsoft can fix, and that many of the bugs have been outstanding for over three YEARS... you get a little disillusioned with the pretty-pretty-pointy-clicky crib.

It's his decision, and IIRC, he'd actually had voicecomm working. Unless I'm completely insane or misremembering the timeframe.
