You can't call 2.1p internal if the NS dev team handed it over to a different organisation, valve. In that case it would be called a private release...

Pretty much sums it it. 2.1p was an internal release for Valve. Not to say Flayra gave Valve rights to ns or anything. Valve probably just wanted to see how NS did on steam because of the entire "NS might be distributed over steam" thing.

Okay, for starters, I've been against nancy for a while, but that's okay, I can get over it. All I'd like to know is, is there a website somewhere where all the changes in nancy are summarised, because I don't particularly want to go through a 91 page thread to see if you made the nessesary changes and major overhaul to ns_nancy. If there is a link, I'd strongly recommend editing your first post and adding it to there, so people that are new to this thread don't get lost in all the pages.

The only changes I remember reading about in the random pages I chose were some larger windows for onos, so yeah, if there's a summary somewhere, link me please :)

Well basically fixing the clipping issues with the onos and adding "flaps" for the vents are the only changes.

So it's not getting a major overhaul like all the other maps got? That'd be a rather large mistake in my opinion, nancy has some rather large gameplay flaws, the biggest being only one entrance/exit for walking marines into each hive (without welders). (No-name doesn't count, as both entrances lead to the same room).

I'm sure you've all been over this before, but I really think that you should consider giving it a lot more enhancements, new corridors, etc. Otherwise it'll still be a useless map for balanced wars =\

The map, however, will be great for FUN nostalgia. If I could map worth a penny I'd probably rework the vent system to make it less terrifying and make it less easy to siege camp Subspace hive. But that's about it!
• BahamutBahamut Join Date: 2003-01-20 Member: 12522Members, Constellation
meh, it's fine for "public" games, but when you get into wars and stuff you really do need two viable entrances // escapes for onos into each hive, as well as vents that don't look directly at a hive, and a marine spawn that isn't very open. It really, really needs some alterations. Even if you just release the "mirrored" version, then go back and alter it and change it's name or something, I just believe it's design should be improved a bit if it is going to become a chosen map for wars.

That's just my opinion though, I'm sure there's a lot of you out there that don't want to even consider it, but thanks if you do consider releasing an 'enhanced' version as well as the 'mirrored' one.

I think the vents were changed to not look in at the hive, but I'm not sure. They connected the two vent systems to create a single vent system, they made Port Engine hive bigger for onos, and they made vent entrances easier to get into for skulks (no lips on the vent walls in many places). I think the weldable vent to subspace was changed, though I don't remember how (it might be a doorway somewhere else in the wall instead).

Bahumut, your concern is valid, but it's basically like this. They worked on making it EXACTLY like the original, fixing only things that NEEDED fixing (onos hull and movement, vents). Now, (after a couple of bugs are squished) it'll go into playtesting. With a bit of planning and seeing exactly how it runs in 2.1, they'll know what they need to change and how.

Attempting to balance a map that hasn't been played in nearly 5 months is simply not a good idea, let alone balance a map that hasn't even seen the light of day in the latest version of the game. So don't worry about it. The version that we get will most likely be different than the version we remember.

And I really agree about the first page being edited. Too often people ask the same questions over and over again. Maybe someone ought to write up a FAQ to be posted there. (And keep the original post in quotes at the bottom).

Alright, just so it's done. I hope this is of some use. Lazer can stick this on the front page for all the silly nubs in the world to see if he sees fit.

The Nancy Project FAQ

Please read before asking questions or making suggestions!

Why don't you get the original from the author?
The original .RMF file was lost after a hard-drive failure on Devildog's computer.
This file is needed in order to make changes and compile the map.

Umm... Nancy wasn't lost... I have the 1.04 map on my harddrive... why can't you use that?
Yes, many of us have it. The problem with the old map is that it was compiled with the wrong hull file. This wasn't apparent until 2.0 came around and now Onos are stuck every time they evolve. And using /stuck is simply not adequate enough of a fix for the NS team. Plus, no balance changes were able to be made so the map's gameplay became outdated.

So why don't you just take the map, and make the changes needed?
The .BSP file is nearly useless when trying to make changes to a map. It's the final optimized version. The Nancy-Team did use it though, in two ways. The first was for reference. Taking screenshots and walking around, they were able to get a good idea of what it should look like. Second, by using a decompiler and were able to get some of the brush work back. This only made using getting the basic dimensions easier to get as decompilers are simply not very efficient and the brushwork they provide is far from optimal. While the entity work can be gotten from RIPent, this still leaves detail brushwork, texturing (a massive job on it's own) and lighting and since we don't have the lights.rad file that Devildog used, lighting is taking a bit of work as well.

Blah and Blah sucked back in the old Nancy. You should change it.
The map is going to be done as faithfully as possible to the original, at least until playtesting by the NS Team. Then, balancing changes will be made as suggested by the playtesters, developers and the original author of the map, DevilDog.

What's changed?
Major changes being made thus far are:
-New onos hull file.
-Changes to Port hive to allow Onos movement
-Added connection between the two vent "systems"
-Easier access to vents after removing "lip"
-Texture alignment issues

No-name hive! Mother hive! Which is it?
It's Mother hive. This was the intended original name. Yes, it's a piece of nostalgia lost, but you'll get used to it. You can really mess with all the silly nubcaeks and keep calling it no-name if you want. No if's, and's, or's, or but's about it. Mother is here to stay!

Can we see some screenshots?
Due to the faithful recreation, you can simply load up the old Nancy and see it there. There are a couple of rough screens of the changes to port, but none have been released of the changes to the vents. Use your imagination in the meantime. (Though for those who don't have the old version of NS, some screens of it may be posted if someone were so nice as to create them.)

Why not just release it so we all can play it! Mass playtesting!
The answer is no, for now. The team wants to have a good quality project released, not betas all over the place. The first releases will be internal to the NS team. In fact, the intention is to have it playtested there. If it's decided at some point that the map just can't cut it, then and ONLY then will it be released publicly as a "custom" map. That scenario is highly unlikley as the map has been played before.

Isn't it too late to be included in 2.1?
The map has been played before. Unlike the other "new maps", basic things are known about how it plays. The testing that needs to be done are bug testing and testing with the new gameplay. Isolating imbalances and fixing them are also on the to-do list. While some maps may need complete revisiting, Nancy (in theory) shouldn't need much. And worse come to worse, there is a very good chance it could be release as part of "2.2". Remember, NS is going to steam, and that means dynamic content! Either way, Flayra has expressed interest in getting this map back in and since he has final say in such matters...

Why isn't this thread stickied?
Stickied threads are meant to be useful. Particularly in the mapping forum. I wouldn't call the information here terribly useful (though I'm sure there is some useful stuff). It's just ... well ... ask the moderators ...

I don't feel like reading 9 gajillion pages of this thread. What did I miss?
Nothing. If it's not written in this FAQ, don't worry about it.

I don't feel like reading the FAQ. I'm going to post a question answered here anyway.
Then expect all answers to that question to point (hopefully without flammage) to this FAQ. (Hint, hint regular readers...)

Why is this thread open to the public if we aren't supposed to ask questions about it?
This thread is here so that we can all see the status of the map. It's a very communtiy oriented project really! This FAQ is merely here to answer the questions asked every couple of pages. I'm sure the team doesn't mind if you ask what the status of the map is every now and then. (Besides... we don't want this on the second page now, do we?) If you have a specific question, do feel free to ask. And do feel free to keep giving these guys the kudos they deserve! Such l337 teamwork hax!

On the issue of stickying the thread: It isn't a helpful resource for people, but it is certainly a classic. It could be compared to a "post your screenshots" thread, or the thread started by Smart_Bomb (which was stickied, unstickied, then finally locked). It could be an inspiration to others, or something like that. I guess it's up to the moderators, but I really think it should be stickied.
