1930 version: He liked to draw. After reviewing his troops, and waiting for action he sees a butterfly . He reaches out to it exposing his head and gets killed by a French sniper.
1979 remake: Same as above but he sees a bird (who he liked to draw) and amidst all the death and destruction of the battle field he sees a lone bird. He quickly gets out his paper and pencile and stands up a little to get a better view of it. And BAM! Sniped in the head.
