Recommend any?
Woah...I almost spelt any as anie. Scary.

Anyway, I haven't seen any good movies where the protagonist(<--big word=pwn) loses at the end. Ha anyone seen any that they'd recommend? Well, Gladiator featured the good guy dying at the end. But I mean like, the bad guy wins.

Edit: Probably should have been more specific, I meant action/sci-fi movies. (Bday party next weekend! w00tcookies!)

Well, I don't know if Tony Montana can be considered a "good guy" but Scarface is a great movie in which the main character dies.

Liku, i think we're going at this the wrong way.

leon, SPR, road to perdition, etc..

the protagonist, though he DIES, is still WINNING...

    he wants protags LOSING. hmm...

The Empire Strikes back ended on a downer. Han Solo was frozen, Luke's dad is Darth (who chopped off his hand), and Leia lost her cinnamin buns.

Memento is the first example that popped into my head, but there's a better one. Possibly the best answer to this question.
Shakespeare's Othello. You can't get much more classic, and you can't find many more evil characters than Iago.

[edit]Action/sci-fi? That changes things a bit. Chances are most answers will end up being a horror/sci-fi blend because protagonists never seem to "win" in better horror films

Funny... I don't remember the protagonist dying in Memento, anyways, Scarface is still the best example.
[edit] Except not... I completely forgot about American Psycho. [/edit]

It's just one of those movies where everybody loses. Heck, I don't even know if there is a clear protagonist -- everyone's either evil or a jerk in their own personal way. Not too much unlike regular people, actually...

    Hm.

Well. Although it may not fit, I suggest seeing "The Game" simply because it's a good movie.

No, the protagonist doesn't die, but the guy who turns out to be good does. At least, I think he was good.

(cue bad singing voice) Tiiiiimmme is on my side. Oh yes it is. Tiiiimmmme is on my side.

The only movie I've ever seen where the protagonist loses everything at the end...Fallen

    [edit]

And the World War I film is All Quiet On The Western Front.

Ever seen Citizen Kane? There's a classic protagonist-losing film. Other than that... You're in luck! I'm in a noir film class!

Lessee... Out of the Past sticks out pretty strongly, I really liked that one because Robert Mitchum was such a badass in it. Double Idemnity as well. Criss Cross is supposed to be good, I haven't seen it. Also check out The Third Man, which was written by Graham Greene, so it has really awesome dialogue (compare it to Double Idemnity, for example).

If you want something more recent, that's tougher, as there aren't many films with bad turns nowadays. U-Turn was the most annoying movies I've ever seen (stupid Oliver Stone), but it was a reasonably effective noir parody (watch out for J Lo's terrible acting).

"The Fallen" the protagonist clearly loses in that movie. Was a pretty good movie, makes you angry at cats.

Edit: I am retarded and do not read 2 posts up before replying.

Theres some mel gibson movie where he gets frozen in a capsule in a WWII experiment.... his aging stops but soon as he gets back out he starts aging again then dies at the end. Er.. I can't remember.. he either dies or just gets really old. Decent movie. He doesn't really actually lose though.

I had to read that book in English class, I hated that book.

How about Little Nickey? I mean, he is the son of the devil... That makes him bad rite?
    Or Donnie Darko?...
    Or Jeepers Creepers...

I think he means the protagonist LOSING, rather than DYING. Dying doesn't necessarily mean that the hero loses.

I don't think anyone mentioned it yet, but Braveheart would fall under this category. It's one of my favorite movies.

    FOR FREEDOM!

Davis, may I recommend editing the post and just having the titles, as the summaries kind of ruin it?
