seeing how i just read the whole thing, two things crossed my mind:

    1) some peeps will hate it and start saying cs is the worst game ever(which is irrelevant to the qeustion)

    2) overall a good idea to let steam off after some nerve-breaking games of tactical NS.

what the hell is wrong with some good ol' fashion team deathmatch? it is a great mode to get some experience with weapons. this willl decrease the loss of heavy weapons which will mean the comm will have not to drop as much weapons as before. but as always some peeps think that DM is automatic CS(games like CS and TFC do have a degree of tactics involved, i haven't seen one man cap the flag simply by shooting enemys on a good server with competent engineers).

well if you want tactics, then forget about getting HL2 and the like 'cause they aren't sporting a commander mode or something equivalent.

Also, if you really think ns needs something to teach the newbies how to play, all they need to do is....ask! The natural-selection community is (currently) one of the most friendliest gaming community around. Just yesterday I was trying to teach a friend the basics of ns on JarHedz server, and before you know it, a lot of the other players chipped in with their own advice and knowledge. Again...Im not sure if this attitude will stay once the co_ maps get mixed in. I mean when was the last time <insert game similar to NS:C, im sure you know of MANY> had players that were THIS accepting of newbies?

i said this mode would teach survivabilty to newer players. how to shoot at aliens and get experience with higher level guns. this could be a great help to to comms.

seraphys domination idea sounds great, it would still make NS somewhat tactical.

let me quote something from 2.0: JUST WAIT AND SEE HOW IT TURNS OUT.

It's a great way to build up your combat skills without the hassle of alot of the teching up and building. I doubt very much that it will be like cs <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> The weapons and characters of the game are far too different for the two to be compared on the fact that they both would be deathmatch. I'm all for it. It would attract more players that don't want to have the steep learning curve and make combat senarios occur more often. My only question is if you upgrade is there only a linear pattern to how you upgrade? That is, if i have a shotgun can i only upgrade to GL? If thats the case it's a major flaw. The GL is currently very hard to use in comparison to the lmg or shotgun in a DM environment. Unless you added a secondary fire feature where the grenade explodes on impact. I didn't read the other 15 odd pages i skipped because i dont have the time right now so sorry if i'm repeating.

    How about that flamethrower flayra?

At first I thought "God, NO!! A CS clone for NS" but then I engaged my brain and did some thinking.
Recently I have played CS more than NS despite being an admin of one of the finest NS servers.. why is this? Because time and patience has been in short supply, and NS requires both in abundance.

Rather than make the tactical game more arcade this move is to have a quick fix option for us NS fans. I think it would be nice to have NS:C maps in rotation with NS similar to the way de_ and as_ maps can go on the same server but change the rules of the game. Meaning that NS:Pure can be the tactical, strategic game we love for the weekends and days when we can devote an hour to gaming. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Also I would like to see the current problems with 2.0 fixed (and yes I know you are well on the way) and NS made Steam and VAC compatible BEFORE much time is given to NS:C

HOWEVER there is validity to scenario maps like was mentioned.

IE give marines a setup and access to weapons/etc (with kills/goals) and have aliens be opposite.

I don't care about clan play... clans and tournies can cry all they want.  If it doesn't work for them... they don't use it tough luck.

Basically I think this type of kill/objective based gameplay with individual upgrade options would be good, but only in the context of maps that had a theme for NS.  I agree with most that just making de_dust with ns guns and textures is not where the mod should head (old tired territory with lots of competition).

I think at the point of ns:combat you are moving away from ns as a fps/rts mod and into the universe of ns.  That is a good thing.  Stories, special scenario maps, etc I think would benefit ns tremendously.

I would definately be interested in doing some scenario maps, or design work at the least.

I think to keep NS:combat new and exciting new weapons/mutations/upgrades would need to be added as well. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
NS is a team game, individualising upgrades/weapons for marines is not team oriented.

If you want your kill/objective based gameplay (note: NOT <b>team</b>play) go play some cs. essentialy what i believe this is doing is trying to get cs players to come play "ns" because its the same thing just different guns.

I have very strong views on this, feel free to flame me all you like. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->

    With regards to Rank...

    1. Private
    2. Private First Class
    3. Corporal
    4. Sergeant
    5. Lieutenant
    6. Captain
    7. Commander
    8. Major
    9. Field Marshal
    10. General

    And for aliens

    1. Hatchling
    2. Xenoform
    3. Minion
    4. Ambusher
    5. Attacker
    6. Rampager
    7. Slaughterer
    8. Eliminator
    9. Nightmare
    10. Behemoth

Also, gorge should definitely be in. It's a healer and support class. Just think of it as a medic, it can hide behind enemy lines and back up rampaging onii.

However, in my personal opinion I would rather see Marine Vs Marine gameplay first, rather then this. But if this comes first then so be it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Eagle i like your idea. Like for a certain MAP only. Not the server itself. Only the MAP its running. So you can have 1 NS:C map. But wait... then some servers will have all the maps ns:c and there will be no more normal ns! This spells doom!! noooooo! <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

We'll see. In all cases it is a good idea because this is a new game mode, this will not replace the old strategic one. People can choose.

    Good work NS team.

when i first heard of it.... i was nervous

then i thought on it some more

and i have this to say
Flayra has been delivering in my mind...
well thought out and finished products...why should he not this time :-)
so i look forward to this gametype

    one suggestion
instead of kill counting which can lead to kill stealing (and frustration and animosity)
    how about damage counting?
this might encourage teaming up on the enemy.
since everyone firing/biting on that enemy would get damage points.

I'm just replying directly from first post.

Sounds like an interesting idea - though I would be concerned that it would overtake standard NS.

I prefer playing standard NS, and this looks like a sort of fun diversion.

TBH I kind of expected the first NS spinoff to be TSA vs the big corporations.

Still, it'll be interesting to see what Combat brings to the NS universe.

Sephary's idea is pretty excellent, NS:C will be much better with some kind of objective other than 'kill the other team'.

I would propose that maps be designed with 3 res nodes, and roughly symmetrical. Each team has 1 node fairly close to their base, and 1 node is directly in the centre of the map. This will be playable for small teams as most of the action will be focused around the central node area, but with larger teams, sneak attacks on your opponent's node will be possible. Just a suggestion.

I believe this will only lead to CS players first trying NS:C and then moving to ordinary NS. And THIS will lead to servers filling with rambos and "**** this is a ******* stupid piece of ****. If CS sucks, why did you buy it? Thanks for making the new mode... I love it, and will play it as soon as I can get my fingers on it. Nice forum too... I like Invision, but it is a pain in the butt to make themes for. PHPBB is way easier to make and get themes for, but if you have a team, it doesn't really matter.

I too have skipped quite a few pages, but i gotta say something about this step in the evolution of NS that will prove to be either a milestone or a disaster. I agree with what people have said about attracting the wrong sort of people, but not all CS players are bad people (keeping Flayra in mind).

I don't know why you want would res points in NS:C and I don't quite understand how this menu will work (Probably because I skipped 16 pages).

If gorges were included it would be pretty cool if they could invest some of their kill points for res so they can drop buildings around. Very cool indeed.

I suppose the simplest way to balance this mode is to make the amount of kill points required for shotties quite a big leap, therefore making weapon upgrades a huge investment, giving time for aliens to buy their hive upgrades. Which from what I've read seems to be a missed detail by many people.

I look forward to trying NS:C and I will do so with an open mind, but let's hope we don't need to wait so long for a v2.0 of it <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> that is if it needs it of course.

What if marines just....camp out in their base? Shooting things from far away should be easy enough, they get a ton of upgrades, aliens can only rush and rush, not even being able to go gorge. The "you stole my kill" on this mode would be horrible, considering the kills determain the upgrades you get. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
Wrong. There won't be any kill stealing. If you actually bothered to read the layout for this in that map guidelines, it clearly said exp. would be divided. So ramboing by yourself has advantages, as you won't have to divide exp, but also at the same time you are easier to kill by yourself. Skill will be the most important factor in NS:C.

Anyhow, spawn camping at base is easy as hell to avoid if you are a mapmaker. All you have to do is make the alien spawn friendly to marines (big open and no cover), and the marine spawn friendly to aliens (lots of vents and cover).

Now, you might say there will be spawn camping. Wrong again. All you have to do is make the aliens spawn in a safe area, that they walk out of, and that area is now marine friendly. As the aliens move to the middle of the map, it becomes advantageous for both sides.

Although, you won't need spawn safe area's for aliens if the aliens have a hive there healing them 20 hp a sec. Not to mention aliens spawn in waves.

Marine's won't need to spawn in safe areas where they can't be spawn camped because you can't spawn camp marine's as aliens. Just ain't gonna happen. Remember, the marines will spawn in waves... ever try to spawn camp marines that have used distress beacon as skulks? Yeah, that's what I thought too.

So please, map makers, make the marine spawns like hera, where it's VERY friendly for aliens, and make the alien spawns similar to the power silo on nothing, where it's very friendly for marines. This will <b>kill</b> all intentions of camping your own spawn.

Two entirely different gameplay modes in the same mod don't work. DoD tried with Para-style and failed horribly. People always say they want "change", but what they really want is a predictable game experience.

Which means that whenever the server switches to the alternate game mode, everyone leaves. That will lead to servers (and players) dedicating themselves entirely to one mode, splitting the community in two. Not desirable.

OMG 18 pages of pain and i read the whole lot!!

I put total faith in Flay and co. and i feel if they can achieve something they will. Too many people are so resistant to change its sad.

For all those posts about weaps not being useful or too useful, im pretty sure Flay knows what he's doing and will balance every aspect of it.

For those that didnt know this was the original intention of ns <a href='http://www.overmind.org/strathl/Humans%20vs.%20Aliens.htm' target='_blank'>http://www.overmind.org/strathl/Humans%20v...s.%20Aliens.htm</a>

This will be make or break for the mod and i stand by it on all aspects no matter what. Flayra is the only person i know that is coming close to making a game that will appeal to everyone I say good luck to him.

For all those close minded people that think they are above CS players plz get over yourselves. I am not a fan of CS but i play it a bit due to the fact that NS just isn't huge in my local lans, if we can create a game that will appeal to all, then perhaps i will get a real choice of what game i will play and not just be forced to play cs coz thats all that can be played for 5 to 15 min matches.

This idea is a smart one to open the community to more people and to allow all people to play it regardless of how many people you have. This is real gaming evolution. I still believe this is make or break just due to the fact of all the people in the community that would disregard a good game on the possibility that it mite become another.

If u could mix the best parts of all games you would attract the best and worst of people, the worst are more memorable sadly and therefore degrade opinions of the game as a whole. It will just have to lie in the control of Flay and co and see what will happen but everyone get behind Flay and back him up he is trying to improve things for the community as a whole and he deserves credit for that.

Im sure Flay knows all the consequences of his actions, and sadly i dont like seeing him release info like this to the immature community, they need education before they post. Its for reasons like this, the beta forum nearly got closed off to plain members.

    GL Flay and co.

I know several cs teams that tried ns and won't play it again just because of the harshness of the ns community towards people that don't know how to play.

A newbie in a regular round of ns only hurts the team, alien or marine. So he will get yelled at cursed off the server.

Anyways my point is, I believe this could help newbies out in learning basic combat in ns.

It will also be nice if you want to play for just a few minutes.
