The first room I made for the map was based on the Hypostyle Hall from a temple in Karnak. The columns in my version were replaced with missile tubes though. I tried to replicate the main features from the Hall, namely an interplay between light and shadow and a sense of massive scale.

Unfortunately, Half-Life really doesn't like massive scale that much. Even with just a box and some cylinders the r_speeds were around 800, so the room had to go. I remade it and it became the Missile Room in the finished map. The light and shadows theme is still there -- the main walkway is brightly lit and the rest of the room is dark. A also added a high and low theme by making the marine half on a raised walkway and putting the alien area below it. The center of the map seemed like a good place to put it since it reprensents a transition between the bright corridors of the marine area and the darkness of the alien held areas.

So... that's why the map is called ns_karnak. Another example of my odd naming system is my next map (there's a screenshot on the screenshot thread). The corridor I made was based on a corridor from Aliens: Resurrection, which was on a few days ago. Wynnona Ryder was in it. The (temporary) name of the map? Ns_klepto.

nice that someone reads this nonsense XD
but Im really in need for some good maps. the screenies seen in the picture forum are nice but nearly each mapper is terrible slow ( so am I ) when someone at the server asked for ns_wheel I nearly slapped him to death cause there are some people out there not knowing what this server is like. sometimes I dream of an custommap server without any official map in the cycle but over 25 ns-style custommaps that are worth playing.
I think I will create a award-section for good maps
like I told nay his map ns_colony is the favourite map on our server. so guys hurry, your work isnt for nothing anymore...

also will change the server mapchange cycle to change easily to custommaps (problem yet that some maps cant bee played cause of a bug in clanmod)
fix the problem with ns_leigonXIII never played

Perhaps the "pw: nostromo" in the server name was a clue. Or maybe not.

Um, well in rotation it has the 7 reg maps, plus mixed in Rampage, Greian, Atomicamass, and Hydrosity.

You can also vote for quite a few maps, it gives a list when you join the server. Unfortunely, I can't get NS_Lost to open up on my computer, and for some reason when I try changing the map to trane_beta7 (or whatever its name is) and Colony they say bad map name :-\

well are you using the name of the .zip file? because that is different in trane and colony

ns_trane07.bsp
ns_colony.bsp
------
ns_trane_beta7.zip
ns_colony_beta9.zip

use the .bsp names.

nay: hell man, give your map a name I dont know which version is on our server, it was simply called ns_colony. thats problem with some of the maps. I dont even know if ns_atomicmass is the finalversion of ns_atomicmass21 or the other way round.
some more problems about ns_60seconds. will test the map onserver asap. *sigh* another 28 minutes of compile terror!!! commanderview is sowhat irritating and I forgot to add nobuild to the whole arena. you only can build on small platforms with therestower. slightly cool done

ns_atomicmass was the last version to be released to the public (when it was submitted to Flayra for 1.1). You could just check the file creation dates hmm?

chrome angle you will laugh: I checked the creation date. but I wasnt shure. to this time the hivemind featured the old version. its hard to tell people where to download a map when you dont find the place where you downloaded it once. I guess I have to upload all the zips onto the hp.
btw: how do I create this cool exe fileinstallation featured by mayberrygames?
• NayNay Join Date: 2002-06-09 Member: 741Members
its a piece of software something like installshield etc

Personally I don't like Mayberry's installer. It makes all maps - especially the small fun maps - much bigger. Damn background graphics Who needs them?
The only benefit is that it automagically detects your Natural-Selection folder.
I would rather use an installer that detects the directory, is small and has no other interface than a dialogbox that asks you whether to intall the map or not while displaying the map creation time, readme and name. This would even be smaller than a WinZip Self-Extractor, I'm sure.

damn it! I will search another provider for the webspace cause coolfreepage really sucks!
zip will be enough to worry about in the moment.
I will feature the custommap downloads asap but got also in trouble with my hp provider. damn it all...
• NerdIIINerdIII Join Date: 2003-04-05 Member: 15230Members
Well it speaks for itself that a free homepage provider does not let you abuse their service to host a bunch zip-files. After all they get their money from people looking at the advertisements and perhaps clicking on one or the other. If that is your problem (?)
Honestly I do that with my free webspace from 100Free.com, but their terms of use don't say anything about zip-files only pages. This is surely not an accident, beacause you can only host files up to 100KB. But that is enough for me atm. They also offer FTP-upload, so it couldn't be easier. If someone wanted to upload a single MP3 file he would end up with about 50 zip-archives *g*. No I think the 100KB policy saves them from abusers
• Lt_GravityLt_Gravity Join Date: 2003-04-28 Member: 15909Members
what is this for kind of information? 100kb zip file is completely nonsense! we speak over maps! hl maps not tetris! so a zip file ALLWAYS has over 100kb! I dont understand the psovider. they dont even check what kinda files were uploaded. but life goes on and I will never ever choose this "freespace" again. lets try tripod. they updated their linkability to tripod/lycos germany so I have to redo my hp completely. but mapuploads were no problme with tripod.
• NerdIIINerdIII Join Date: 2003-04-05 Member: 15230Members
Yes, I know, I know.... I'm just happy that I can still 'abuse' the service because my downloads are so small *g*. hehe haha (Just some test maps for NS and some tools I coded that are both about 40 KB files.) But finally, when we are talking about maps: aren't there some NS fan sites that host maps for free? Or even some clans like 'Die Doppelnullen'?
• Lt_GravityLt_Gravity Join Date: 2003-04-28 Member: 15909Members
I want our hp-provider to host the files anyway
cool thing is: I had two provider for my private hp but now the remote linking has been canceled between them. so I simply use the unneccessary webspace for the hp! voil?! btw all maps up, the beta 1 version of ns_60seconds will be available soon. watch out!
