As a note, I'm also one of those 'Freelancer' folks that used the CD version of DX9 since it actually has a couple components that the web-download of DX9.0a still doesn't include like some MP3 codecs for XP.

Tracerted it and got to 18, when I tried to get into the lobby it worked, I'll try and see if it doesn't make it that far when I can't connect to the lobby, and Wolfwings: The reason DX9.0a is missing some components is that DX9 final has been out for months.

Well, I got my login name and set up my account allright, but I can't connect to the lobby either! I did a tracert and it looked fine (i.e, the last 3 hops looked almost identical to the ones you posted).
I am using a shared internet connection from a computer downstairs if that makes any difference, although we don't have a router (don't need one for a 2 computer network) and its worked fine for everything until now.
I have absolutely no idea what to do about opening ports and such, so unless there is a step-by-step guide somewhere, i'm screwed.

Yes a 'shared connection' is the same. Go to the docs page, and read up on Connectivity Issues. You may have to install that DXPlay utility to select which ports DirectX will use, and them map them over on the 'connection provider'.
And just FYI, 'connection sharing' is the same thing as IP Masquerading, Network Address Translation (NAT), and so on... just MS slapped their own name on it, and cut down the functionality. Just map over the ports listed in the docs, and enjoy.

Ok, i've got DXport. A lot of confusing numbers. What do I have to do with it? I've set the range of ports to 2302-2311. I have no idea what that means. Not that it matters, because Allegiance still doesn't work.
P.S, please don't reply with things like "you will need to forward port 47624 to the internal IP address blah blah blah....." as I have no idea what any of those words mean (no, not even 'the'). If someone could give me the big letter version with less complicated words I would be eternally greatful and would probably send you a big slice of chocolate cake through the mail.
I need something along the lines of "click this then this", not "modulate this then forward this".

Actually, the vets seem to have become even less-friendly over the last few days than they were when I first joined on... I'm guessing that the sudden influx of 'n00bs' is annoying them, as they can't play the same intense games that they've been used to, until we learn to get with the program. Sadly, even reading through the game docs and newbie info pages, even with a basic grasp of the game and at least semi-decent combat skills, I get left primarily to my own devices while the standing clique go out and try to win the game on their own. Sometimes successfully, sometimes not. Always annoying though, as usually about half the team gets left behind while the 'vets' charge off to do serious battle and blow stuff up.
