Just want to say that this was a GREAT game. I was on the closed beta (MS with the developers - started back at beta 0) and I recall having LOADS of fun playing beta tester vs dev matches.
It's too bad the game died though. During the beta many of us felt that they should have made the game independant of the subscription. (like Freelancer) That way people could buy a premium subscription on the Zone if they wanted, or they could run their own server. I'll have to see if I have a gold edition for this game.
Has there ever been an 'official' statement from MS on the status of this game? They still have the old stuff on the MS website: http://www.microsoft.com/games/allegiance
It looks like a great game, but I'll have to play it with a keyboard. I just went to the website of the company that made my joystick, and it cheerfully informed me that it's no longer supported (and there are no current drivers for it). GG Microsoft and Mad Catz.
I'm using a microsoft precision pro sidewinder I got off ebay for $8.00. With windows xp you can have it automatically detect it, and been working great with all the rest of my games. I'm hoping to get my 2nd confirmation e-mail soon, dying to play. I'll let you know if I have any probs with the joystick.
If you have any technical problems, I highly recommend searching and posting on AHQ. One of us is bound to have been through all that.
Re: learning curve: it took me about 30 hours of gameplay to grasp all the main aspects of the game. As for proficiency..well... I'll go out on a limb and say 6 months.. yeah it does take some time.
spunkmeyer - thanks for the instructions on setting up an account
ive downloaded, done training missions [except commander], and although its hard and fairly annoying at times, i dont think its such a bad game
problem is, i cant really sign up because my forum email isnt the one i use every day, because its run out [the email provider discontinued its free email services a while ago and i havent been bothered changing anything seeing as i didnt need it for ns forums]
but yeah, in case i need to verify, thomasopdam - at - hotmail.com = my email
thanks
edit: just got a PM from you about half a second after a post [on the refresh]
I seem to be having problems, presumably joystick related o.O On the 2nd training mission, basic flight, after the chick goes offscreen and says she's above and to the right of me, I can't turn to face her o.O I've tried using mouse, turning joystick every which way, etc, all to no avail. I went ahead and tried remapping the controls, and apparently the game DOES recognize input from the joystick, as I can make it remap keys as x/y axis-0, etc. Any ideas?

Well, can drop in the game, fly around in the training missions, and (seemingly) connect/verify with SOVLogin. Even updated itself while I watched, then restarted to apply the changes. All well and good.
Attempting to actually connect though... there's the rub. Sitting at the updater screen with the 'Available Games Listing' button. The scroller is meandering by quite happily, and SOVLogin hasn't tossed any errors. Hitting the button though, Allegiance just sits and spins for a bit before complaining that it's timed out.
I *am* behind a NAT, but I'm pretty sure I've set up the iptables rules to forward the needed DirectPlay ports to my workstation. (Though the way Roaring Penguin does it, I'm not certain if they need to be set on ppp0 or eth0.. tried them both ways, and neither did a lick of good).
Anyone have ideas?
(edit) Correction, apparently they have to be set on BOTH interfaces for some reason. :b Only had tried them on one *or* the other, previously. It seems to be working now, or at least gives me a listing of the open games.(/edit)
Cool, never really played any kind of "space, sci-fi, flight simulator" before, unless you count being the only person in my class to successfully land the space shuttle at the Huntsville Space Museum. Will defiantly register.

How do you use a mouse for turning? There are no ingame options for this... I'll check again, maybe it only works if you dont have a joystick. [edit] Found it... "Enable Virtual Joystick" Why didn't they just say mouse look? My handle in Alleg is Pulse btw [/edit]

YEARRRRGGGGGGGGG! I finally was able to get into the lobby server and find a game, saw Talesin and was promptly disconnnected with some authenication error and now whenever I try to login it says my callsign is already logged in. [edit] nm, its working again [/edit] [edit2] wonderful... The lobbys down again [/edit2]

Frustrating to dust off my Wing Commander skills again, just to have someone strafe up and around to escape from a perfectly-executed Dralthi Slide.
Though some part of me can't help but compare to Freelancer as well, and miss the ability to cut the engines (and compensators) and coast to conserve fuel on a long trip, or spin around and fight someone tailing you, while sliding backward blind. :b

Oh, hush. I only skipped the Command tutorial as I'd assumed I would only be playing as a pilot for at least two or three weeks before I got the hang enough to play the Command role.
Heh... leaving myself set to the Command wing was a mistake in that regard. Kept thinking all the 'goto X' commands were meant for me, and was wondering why all the Miners were following me around. Though I *did* pick up quickly on what the Probes did, and ended up skimming around for a game with no weapons and a cargo-hold full of Probes, dropping one near the middle of each sector before running away from the ticked off opposition. Seemed to make the Comm happy, and I got blown up at least a little less, being able to outrun the pursuers.
Just on the off-hand... anyone else get horrible amounts of frameskip/slowdown at the default resolution? Running a Radeon 9500 Pro, so I honestly can't see what would be lagging it that hard at 800x600, unless the game pulls funky visual rendering techniques. The lack of an ability to set up your visual options other than in-game is moderately annoying as well, being a tweakaholic.

I'm getting that too, also, turning hardware acceleration makes the game look like ****, but doesn't affect perfomance at all, there should be a huge performance increase when I switch to hardware but there isn't. Thats not a real problem though, 640x480 works fine and looks great, the real problem is that I can never get into the lobby, seriously, I've played two actual games, ever, although I've tried at least 30 times now, is anyone else getting this problem? Another problem is that there never seems to be more than 10 people online at one time, its almost getting to the point that its not worth the effort, I mean, the actual game is outstanding, but its almost impossible to play, even without the learning curve.
Well, i've done all the tutorials, now i'm just waiting for my e-mail......
Dum de dum....
I had the problem where the HUD disapears for no aparent reason, so I just change resolution and, oh look, its back! I just hope the HUD doesn't disapear like that in actual games.
Is it me, or do the computer controlled enemy tactics seem to be to ram into you? And how come they always survive the collision
I was playing the tutorials assuming it was like starlancer, i.e, hordes of ridiculously easy enemies who can't shoot for fudge. But no! The enemy ships are actually a pretty close match for mine (in the tutorial anyway). I also wasn't expecting a collision to completely obliterate my ship; in starlancer a collision does a little bit of damage, and the enemy ship sort of pings off your shield. Now I have to change my whole flying style!
Not that these are BAD things, I guess i'll have to play it for real and see....
Have you guys been able to do the last training mission? The "free technology experiment" thingy. Didn't work for me

Hmm, lobby connection problems could be a network routing issue - you haven't switched to the open lobby have you? As for players, yeah, it's usually pretty thin in the morning, but right now, for example, there are 28 players on.
Hardware acceleration on or off should make a huge difference in both visuals and performance. The biggest performance penalty with HW off is when there are explosions around you, such as in a minefield. Not sure why you are running 640 tho, people can play 800x600 even with TNT2s with little problem.
I used to have an issue with stuttering when stuff filled up the screen, turned out it was Trillian (go figure). If all else fails, try ALT-J (LOD scaler)
BTW, I'm here until late Tuesday so you can keep the registration requests coming.
