SBV, click on free games.

Spunky, have you heard anything else about the HUD disappearing? It won't show any text period (including chat messages), just bars and the targeting picture at the bottom.

Great game though, best part is the XvT controls. I'm already in an XvT clan, and XvT still pwns, 'cept for maybe the lag.

Ok heres basic tips I've found out while playing...

When game starts load your cargo up with probes, then launch. Press F3 to go into the commander view and go scout around other sectors finding new alephs, dropping probes where you think they might be helpful (they will tell you what enemies are in a sector). Pick up any "tech" (weapons, boosters, etc.) you see when scouting around. When youre looking for alephs, they form in a pattern in the sector, two alephs = line, three = triangle, four = square, etc. Use this to predict where the other alephs might be. Once youre done scouting, ripcord back to your base (target base with B then rip with R). Now you can either climb into a fighter and defend your miners (find where they are by bringing up the mini map and looking for the shovel), stay at home, scout some more, or just see what others are doing and follow them around.

Is there a way to get this game on a CD for we 56ks? You should consider making a service - $5 for a CD with the installer on it.

Easy. Just get a friend who can download it, copy it and send it to you...

Running a Radeon 9500 Pro, so I honestly can't see what would be lagging it that hard at 800x600, unless the game pulls funky visual rendering techniques. The lack of an ability to set up your visual options other than in-game is moderately annoying as well, being a tweakaholic.

Just as a test, runs fine at 1024x768 on a Kyro2 for crisakes. Radeon 9500 should be happy as a clam chewing on it at MUCH higher resolutions, both effective and real, than that.

I have no problem logging in with sovLogin. Allegiance than launches. I can't get to the lobby however. When I click gameslist I get the box asking for my callsign and then after a 10 second pause a "Failed to connect to the lobby message" Also at the top of the page where you select games list it still says zone matchmaking service. Is this right? I'm using the retail version of allegiance with the patch from your page. Should I just try the download version?
• MelkorMelkor Join Date: 2002-12-18 Member: 11068Members
Using the downloadable version didn't make a difference. I still get the Failed to connect to the lobby message.

Are any of the 'failed to connect to Lobby' people behind a NAT? Take a look at the docs, and note that you need to map in the DirectPlay ports to your machine in order to get it to work.

I have a cable modem and airport extreme router.
Could you be a little more specific as to what I gotta do? What docs?
How do I map the ports?

Melkor,

Go to http://docs.alleg.net then Connectivity Issues. Basically you need to forward DirectX 7 ports you your machine, and if the range is too large (102 ports) then you need to narrow it down with DXPort.

Oh, and someone was asking about Training Mission 7 - you need to have the server installed for that to work.

I get "cannot connect to lobby server" regardless of whether or not I'm using my firewall (zonealarm) and it works sometimes, but its extremely rare and seemingly random, once again, I play in 640x480 because I get horrible FPS in anything higher than that, my vid card is a Geforce2mx 32mb, which is 100x faster than my voodo 3, which is faster than a TNT2...
[edit] I have a DSL modem (no router) using a standard NIC configuration [/edit]

Thanks for all the help but I still don't understand exactly what to do. I followed the instructions at that link and DXDIAG says allegiance is using DX7 which means(according to that page)that I need the following ports open:
Initial TCP Connection 47624 Outbound 47624 Inbound
Subsequent TCP Inbound 2300-2400 2300-2400
Subsequent TCP Outbound 2300-2400 2300-2400
Subsequent UDP Inbound 2300-2400 2300-2400
Subsequent UDP Outbound 2300-2400 2300-2400

Right?

Ok, so what do I do with that info. A step by step explanation would helpfulcuz I have no experience opening ports.

I did download DXport, and started it. I entered 2300 at start port, and then entered 2400 for stop port. Next I hit update. It then gave me a list of all the ports from 2300 to 2400 and said Available UDP/TCP. I left the program running and tried to connect and still had no luck.

And I'm still getting the lobby problem, I'm not behind a router or firewall so the alleg docs don't help at all.

Okay, I'm running into an odd problem...

I can connect to the lobby just fine.

Every time I try to join an actual game... boom, fails THERE.

DirectPlay ports, TCP and UDP, even the 'server' ports, are set up correctly through the Linux 2.4.x NAT box.

System is WinXP, newest video card drivers, tried reinstalling DirectX 9.0a and that didn't help. What's goign on here, and what else needs to be mapped? Normally, I'm the one folks go to for help on this, so it's double-annoying. =-.-= I just can't figure out the problem. :-P

sounds like everybody's having a lot of trouble =/

somebody [cough.. not me... cough...] should make a huge FAQ/help doc

Training is nothing like the actual game - those who have already played will attest to that

Now, I have no idea what eediot's problem is. Never encountered or heard of anything of the sort. Sorry. Again, someone else on AHQ might be able to help.

Wolf, crash (exception violation in SOVLogin) on joining the actual game is a sure sign that you didn't apply the patch. I haven't encountered another reason so far.

Melkor, you have to setup your router to forward those ports to your gaming machine. It depends on the actual router - could be a web interface (you type http://192.168.1.1 or whatever your routers IP is in your browser), could be a telnet interface, could be a utility. Either google for it or post your router model on AHQ. What you'll eventually end up doing is telling the router to send TCP and UDP conection on those ports to the internal IP address of your game machine. Some routers cannot forward all 102 ports involved because they don't have an option to enter a range (instead each individual port has to be forwarded one by one) - that's where DXPort comes in. It reduces the number of ports needed from 102 to 10 or less.

Silencer, when you are having the problem, do a tracert www.alleg.net. The last few hops before it times out should look like this:

16 130 ms 70 ms 150 ms srp1-0.rlghnca-rtr1.nc.rr.com [66.26.33.179]
17 100 ms 130 ms 70 ms srp4-0.rlghncg-rtr1.nc.rr.com [66.26.33.167]
18 160 ms 210 ms 100 ms srp1-0.rlghncj-ubr2.nc.rr.com [24.25.1.150]

If you can't get that far, it's an intermittent router outage somewhere along the way. Nothing can be done.

Hm, did I miss anything?

Spunky

Been in the game several times already, although now one concern i have:
During the evenings at least there seems to be absolutely no one on. Played in one game earlier with about 30 people, now can't find any active games. Is this normal? Or am I using an outdated server or something?
