God, I havn't felt like this much of a newbie since I started playing CTF in Infantry and tried to kill people with an Electron Beamer. That was a while ago, too. ^^
EDIT: To clarify how much of a newbie I was (and am feeling right now) here's a short story of crazy newbie Redford's adventures in pre-Sony infantry.
I had been playing infantry for a little while, and had improved in my skills enough so I knew the interface, and how to fight, but I didn't understand how to examine weapons and what the damage meant. In infantry, you have energy, and you have health. When you take damage, a % equal to your current % of energy is actually taken, the rest goes away. Of the amount that isn't blocked from your energy, it goes to your body armor. Only the damage that gets past those two layers actually hurts you. In addition, most hits drain energy as well, leaving you vulnurable to repeated blows.
But I degress.
One day, I opened Infantry (which was a little diffrent them, the server list had the logon field AND the password field, your logon name was your account.) and was suprised to see that the number of zones had increased to two. Not only was the standard "Beta zone" (the first zone in Infantry, a testing zone, which every other zone has sprang from), but there was a new listing as well, "Infantry CTF"! I was highly excited by this development. I spared no time in logging onto the zone and downloading the map and the files to my computer, which took about an hour back then because I was on AOL (gasp!).
I entered the zone, but being a newbie, I didn't read the zone news, that was a mistake. I spawned in some sort of dropship like device on the ground with a turret out front. The new dropships are space-based. You teleport down. No turret. Regardless, this turret is long removed from Infantry now, as it allways shot straight at you at high speed and did nearly infinite damage. Anyways, I was in the dropship, and tried to buy things. No dice. I had no money. However, this was back when you could drop anything, including weapons, so instead of running around outside armed with an autopistol, I found a weapon called "electron beamer" left on the floor of the dropship. I quickly picked it up and ran outside. Soon, I found a member of the opposing red team, the "collective millitary". I attempted to kill him with the electron beamer, and failed. I repeaded this about four more times, until I got confused (and frustrated) and used my cash to buy an autopistol. Then I queried my team as to what we were supposed to be doing.
Oh, I see. Flags. And we capture them. Hmm.
I get a sudden flash of insight, and decide to look at the electron beamer's stats to see why it wasn't killing anything.
Back then, Ebeamers were just slightly more effective then they are now. However, it was very clear. They only did energy damage. The reason I wasn't killing anything was because the electron beamer didn't damage health. At all.
Needless to say, I felt like an idiot.
Of course, there was that time I set my mines to primary fire by accident and tried to suiside someone because I couldn't figure out how to assign slots, or that time I hopped into a tank for the first time and got myself and three others killed instantly... but those are other stories. ^^
Well after playing for about the past four hours...
I'm confused out of my mind... Yea the playerbase will answer questions, but for the most part if you ask them what youre sposed to do youll generally get a reply of "fly around and do nothing" "sit around and do nothing" or "dont get in the way"... I learned next to nothing about what was actually happening in the game, and sometimes asking still didnt help... situation:
Me: What exactly do probes do?
Teammates: They act as radar
Me: I know they act as radar but whats the significance of them?
Teammates: They act as radar
Me: Wow you clarified that so much, now I understand their role in the game.
Yea.. well.. the playerbase is very nice and all, but for the most part everyone is too busy to actually help you, and you won't really learn much. I'm gonna stick to it, but its really frustrating right now, seeing as I just spent the afforementioned past 4 hours flying around doing nothing.
can anybody explain to me [briefly] the full steps for getting to play the game, from nothing? [im overseas, not USA]
i.e:
1. download 33mb file, from this link : http://www.blahblah.com/file.exe 2. extract/install it fully, dont worry about configuring, running, or registering it yet 3. go to this link: www.site.com/register.php and create a user/pass for yourself 4. youll get a confirmation email, and confirm it 5. youll then need to log in at www.site.com/login and then change your account details [top left 'PROFILE' link] to your country 6. run the game, and find a USA server, [or australian if there is one], via multiplayer > login [use your user/pass from the site] > continent: australia/america, then clicking join on any server you want 7. play

QUOTE (OttoDestruct @ Jun 7 2003, 07:58 AM)

Me: What exactly do probes do?

The probes are very practical for discovering enemy bombers. In fact, if you have an "empty" system, and sit in an interceptor with a very short scan range, it's very likely you will miss all the bombers and scouts out there. If a scout is in the region, it will detect you very easily (depending on your signature given out (which is dependant on weapon and shield selection))..
That way, probes are death for cloakers. And on a side note, if you do buy a cloaked bomber or fighter, MAKE SURE you don't have a shield. The cloakers are weak enough, that if you would get attacked, you will be dead anyway. The shield would provide you with a few additional seconds (probably 1 or 2), but it will greatly diminish your cloaking capabilities. A cloaker without a shield and turrets (only hunter-killer missiles) can achieve a signature of only 12% sometimes (if I remember correctly). And that's close to zero.
1-Get the full game from http://www.alleg.net. Run it, do the training missions, see if it's your thang. 2-Email me at spunkmeyer@fastem.com with the nickname you want and the URL to your profile page here. 3-After you get the (second) email from me confirming your account has been created, go to http://login.alleg.net and follow the instructions there, skipping the registration steps[/B]
otto,
http://docs.alleg.net -> Newbie Tips has good suggestions on what to do, as well as the top post on the Newbie Zone. Just had my first game, twas really cool, got a few kills, then got into a turret and got some more kills... and then we lost, and somebody had the bright idea to make me a commander, and kept on telling me to give it up, I don't know how, so they said to join another team and come back, but that didn't work, maybe i wasn't doing it right, so I said I'd leave the game and come back, left, and then the game told me I couldn't login to the lobby server. Is it down or something?
I downloaded the installer, installed it, booted it up and I was greeted with...
a blank black screen.
I tab-alted out of it, closed the program, and tried again. Same thing. Anyone else have that problem?
I've had a problem or two as well, whenever I finish a training mission the screen just freezes. Apparently it goes back to the menu but I never see it (I can hear the sounds of mouse-overs, though)
No, I patched it Redford.
I downloaded the full version (supposedly with the patch) from alleghq, is that why mine is screwing up? Oh, the HUD also halfway dissappears in the middle of training missions. Goodee.

Don't even bother playing if you don't have a joystick, its just not fun, well, maybe after 6 years of practice it might be kinda entertaining but... The thing to remember is that you will get pwned by your joystick enhanced bretheren.
Yay, it's fun, kind of Homeworld/Freespace hybrid. I played online already, much harder than the combat-simulation(I stopped after 7 bots because it got boring )

Hi again.. to answer a few questions that seems to have popped up:
1-Yeah, Europeans/Australians/Mongolians can play. No probs.
2-The game is VERY playable with the mouse. In fact, I don't have a joystick. Aiming is actually more precise with the mouse, however you can't throw it around like a joystick, and obviously you don't get a hat, throttle or as many buttons.. so you need to compensate with a good keyboard setup.
3-The controls are fully customizable. Look under ESC->Game Options
4-The problem with the freeeze seems to be a driver issue. Best place to go for those is AHQ.
5-Yup, you need the patch.
6-Feel free to msg me in game if you see me around. I'm more than happy to yak away
7-Thansal, if your joystick works in Windows, try hitting numpad 0 in game. It may also be a driver issue, someone had a problem with Saitek drivers. (again, see AHQ for more help)

Well, I finally got in my first couple of games today, and was simply blown away by how well everything works perfectly. I'm left wondering why this didn't become a hit, and a legend in online gaming, learning curve aside. It is absolutly incredible. If you find this intimidating, stick with it. Like I am doing, like I will be doing, and what you should do. I can see beyond the learning curve, and at the end is a game that could neigh be legendary in terms of a teamwork combat space sim combined flawlessly with an RTS.
This game was defintly ahead of it's time.
I will defintly be playing this a lot more when I am not sleepy. ^^

Oh! The memories...
