No Flames PLEASE!
being as the current DoD fourms are down, i want to make this thread the offical place to take about DoD and how much it sucks/rules

rules:

QUOTE

ONLY people that have played v1.0, and have more to say then it sucks/it rules

ONLY TALK ABOUT GAMEPLAY!! (not the pre-patch madness)

i want to see posts that have more then 10 words people!

we will start with mine:

at frist.. i was disapointed... valve really did take over the team, and you can see the counter-strike in it.

the worst part i think, it the sniper can now move around, (albet at walking speed) while scoped (CS) and the death cam after you die ranks up there. the minimap is cool, but is shows the enemys nades.. whats really sucks

the game has turned into a mix of BF1942 gun recoils, Counter-Strikes feel, and Natural-Selections skulk on celearty running.

but after playing a few minutes, it begins to grow on you.

and i must talk about the graphics..... OMG is this even HL? i was blown away! i mean these are some hi poly models... but the unfourtainate side affect is that is lags on really slow vid cards (hugs geforce 4 ti 128meg )

i did have a lot of lag, but i cant tell if it was my connection or Dod's fault. (most likely my connection)

they did a bit of changing to the recoil... it feels weird now, i cant really describe it..

the new maps are really good (a new snowtown is back.... well the layout anyway) and the brits are really cool to play (the enfieald pwns!)

all in all, it does grow on you, and is a nice break from NS till 1.1

I watched the guy with a railgun take about 7 bullets with my MP40, turn, look, and shoot me.

I tried getting into the game, but this is *NO* DoD 3.1. I feel that it just doesn't play right. It contained the minimap (Cough counterstrike cough), showed your teammates (cough radar cough), included a somewhat useless rocket launcher, nerfed the grenades (at least they're not ueber-leet 'nades of doom), the new recoil is.. interesting? but they ruined the weapon system. I saw no point in using any gun outside of the railgun. The most fun was watching people doing the famous DoD runstrafe, stop, shoot, runstrafe, stop, shoot, and were getting about 3 kills for each death. They really broke the gameplay, and punish any kind of realistic behavior.

If this was the direction they were heading for, they succeeded. If it wasn't..

While I don't really like DOD (its simply not my style of game, much like CS isn't either), I do have nothing but well wishes for the DOD team with this and any future releases. It takes a lot of talent to get a mod to the level where it can go retail, and just as much to keep it going after that.

That's all I got to say. :P

Well i'm around 50% through my download with
20 minutes or so left.
I've been playing Day Of Defeat since 1.3b, back
when the guns didn't have recoil. They simply had
nice World War 2 style graphics and authentic(ish) guns.
Version b2ta 2.0 saw the introduction of the recoil
system and the Machine Guns. Most of the DoD players
loved the new features, but there's always a small
percentage that COMPLAIN about every little detail, and wanted
to see 1.3b back. After a few hours of playing, we all
realised that DoD had grown for the better.
Version beta 3.0 saw a few new weapons (Grease Gun etc)
and the introduction of the para_ maps. Again, the majority
of us just played the game and enjoyed it for what it was.
But again, people complained. Everytime a para_ was loaded
onto the server, people would complain "OMG VOTE MAPZORZ 2!!!"
and "THIS MAP SUKZORZ!" etc. But again, DoD had grown for
the better and alot more people were playing it.

I have no doubt that version 1.0 (or beta 4.0 if you prefer) will be
no different. I know several hard-core DoD players who won't be
pleased with the new features/changes. But it's only a matter of time
before we simply GET USED TO IT and continue enjoying DoD. And
thanking the DoD team for a very good mod.
It's not as good as our beloved Natural-Selection but what is ;-)

All I can say is wow, I really enjoyed it but like Catpoker says you can tell that valve really took over and sunk its claws in
you can see the cs in it. I mean look at the cross hairs THERE LIKE CS'S!!! I remember when the dod
team was all proud with THERE cross hair that looked like iron sites....I mean also I kinda seems like they
turned it into a Mohaa ish as well (well it just feels that way) and also the picking up of guns, I LOVED
it in dod_Festung and I wont lie I even said that it would be cool if you could do it all the time. But alias
it turned against me cause it felt all weird when I was getting killed by my own weapon...just seems outta place
in dod I dunno I've been playing since 1.2 hardcore and stopped playing it once ns hit (lol) then im back again
and it seems even tho I hate valve for slapping it with cs ish type crap I think im gonna be playing it quite a bit
more now, as a break from ns. But to ME it seems like its reverted to the deathmatchy 1.3b feel

God, as if I didn't have enough reasons not to download it already (56k), now the sniper rifle has been turned into a railgun. It makes you wonder exactly what Valve "contributed" to CS, and why it really sucks now (aside from the community, which already sucked before 1.0).

Im mostly concerned with the huge performance hit i got. I used to get an overall 80fps give or take. On the new maps im down to 40, and for some reason when in deathcam mode im down to 10fps??? what gives? I really hope its patchable or turn off the new particle system able or something.

To early to say about the gameplay changes. I agree its a bit counter-defeaty.. oh well.. I shudder to think what the core community will have to say about it.

I like it, except for the new gun sounds. They all sound the same now. Perhaps that's "realistic", but I preferred distinctive sounds for every gun. I especially miss the Kar98 shot.

All the other changes are great. No more retarded Para_ games! That gametype was a clear CS ripoff, and they removed it. So much for the accusations. A minimap that shows your teammates (not the enemies, it's not a radar), and a crosshair that shows your firing cone is pretty much standard for team games nowadays. It's not more of a ripoff than group hotkeys in RTSs. Honestly, which gameplay elements of MOHAA or BF1942 do you actually see in DoD? I don't get it, the games are fundamentally different. All they share is the theme.

The maps are also a great step forward. All those crappy chokepoint maps like Heutau or Zafod are weeded out.

Re. weapon balance, I don't think they changed anything except the Kar98 bolt speed and the BAR recoil. The automatics just feel different because they sound so crappy . I doubt the change will be enough to stop "railgun wars", but so be it. Every team has a powerful rifle, it's not unbalanced, and I definitely prefer long range engagements to kamikaze CQB charges.

Moving snipers frighten me a bit, but I guess letting them move slowly and scoped is better than giving them the high unscoped accuracy of b3.1.

I don't like DOD because it is a boring sniper fest and had to be controlled by server ops. The huge number of camp spot/sniper nests only fuels the "sniper fest" this game is. I don't know how many times I join and game and I see everyone as a sniper.... it's a freakin' staring contest. So we have everyone as some leet sniper sitting somewhere on a dark balcony. It's all the people who don't be lame and go grunt who fall victim because they're the ones that actually have to do any moving. Oh, the limitations of the sniper are nowhere to be seen. In TFC the sniper could only be efective if you shot the head of the victim and you also had to hold the fire button. In CS, the sniper was mostly expensive save for the scout (love that weapon). Also the CS levels didn't have very many effective sniper nests. A lot of levels were indoor so that killed that, but on open maps, the number of effective places could be none to only 5. For example, on dust, under the bridge is the most common spot with the Ts getting the advantage on that. Even if there are a lot of long stretches for snipers to take advantage off, the spots are often in the open and a group of 2 or more could probably take out the sniper. Unlike in DOD you never know what hit ya! So many dark spots to hide in for snipers with great vantage points! Im not kidding. What POS level design is that. So when you encounter the sniper, you can't even fight back cause hes hiding in some dark corner of the map. Heck, in FA the levels weren't that bad. Also, the sniper gun costs. In DOD its nothing but pick this guy and then you got sniper power with the level designs backing you up. It's frickin appaling. Why did they go with all those hiding spots. Even grunts make use of the numerous hiding spots. I know that DOD team probably wants that WW2 feel, but gameplay >>> realism. This is where it has gone too far in the levels department. It does nothing but make the snipers too potent (because there is no restrictions from taking up the sniper rifle either). So there you have it. DOD is a camping/sniper fest. I'm all for playing the game stragetically when its called for, but the public games its just a sniper/camp fest. Why I'm the only person that is a grunt and getting killed by the same 7 snipers covering that BIG OPEN AND BRIGHT area of the map with dark spots surrounding it all. Of course, I may be stupid for walking into a part of the level that's just asking to be sniped... except the stupid flag is there and the rest of my team won't help cause they are busy staring into space cause they won't see anybody walk by cause they haven't noticed the other team is all sniper. Bleh.

Okay, enjoi.

Zerg, it sounds like you'd enjoy blowing up sniper nests with a Bazooka in v1.0.

And by the way, sniper nests have always been flankable on the good maps. A sniper might kill you once, but then you'll know where he is, you can sneak up behind him and whack him with your shovel.

Ugh! Way to bypass a good feature Valve/DOD team! I guess Zerg will hate this version even more than the last ones, its a shame, I really liked DOD on LAN games (which my school has every few weeks).

The only thing about it which has impressed
me, has been the way the sand-bags spews
bits of snad when you shoot them.
Thats not anything ultra special but it's a nice touch.
The rest seems the same, average but enjoyable in
moderation.

I'm off to play The Wind Waker (which was released in
the UK this morning)

Pros: Nice lighting, explosions, ect. Pretty much all the visual effects. SOME of the new models are nice, the thompson sucks though. Nice how they added model transparency!(0,0,255 [pure blue] in the skin)

Cons: Everything else...the gameplay was crap, the kar was totally unbalanced, nobody accually played the right way, they treated it like it was in DM, unlike in the ORIGININAL, REAL DoD 1.0.

Overall: Like someone said:

Yes this is a very nice graphical game, but I think the radar thing map is reall bad. I mean it's not like you have a map all the time when you're a soldier.
Apart from that, they messed up DoD like they messed up CS

I just had a long and incredibly entertaining session, and it was on a server with Friendly Fire! I've never enjoyed an FF game before because the skins look so similar that I never dare to shoot until it's too late. The little icons that identify your teammates, along with the minimap are the best additions to teamplay EVER!

If this is what happens when Valve takes over mods, they need to take over more.

I've also changed my opinion about the gun sound. It really grows on you after a while, and since you can pick up enemy guns now, it doesn't really matter if you can't identify a weapon by its sound.
• abtmabtm Join Date: 2003-04-08 Member: 15337Members
I personally used to enjoy DoD heavily. Now that the team has gone and changed so many things they said they would never do I.E picking up fallen enemy/comrade weaponry I change my stance on who really owns/works on this MOD anymore.

I'm starting to enjoy it alittle more and more with each

The new sand effect is VERY nice though and
i've wasted countless grenades and rockets like
the one below.

I like it a lot. It all feels like a quality game now and the graphics have certainly improved a lot. The sounds may seem a bit similar but it makes for a very good and realistic atmosphere... I played it for a while last night. I must say I'm not impressed. It IS more pleasing to the eyes, but the gameplay just doesn't feel *there*. Just feels a little sketchy if you ask me. I never was a big DOD fan though.
• TenSixTenSix Join Date: 2002-11-09 Member: 7932Members
The weapons are what really **** me off, I duck, shoot twice and the other guy just pops me once and I keel over. I won't even mention how many times 1 guy has run through the spawn, killed everyone, then ran off. Hell, there was one time me and anther guy shot eachother about 5 times each and neither of us died. But I get hit once by a Garand or something and thats it.

It feels so much like deathmatch, the super fast running speeds, insane recoil no matter what, theres no teamplay being enforced from what I see. Everyone goes sniper, runs out of the spawn, and thats it.

Like somone said before, DoD seems like they don't want you to be anything BUT sniper. I mean theres at least 20 sniping spots per map, theres tons of wide open areas, lots of sniper spots around the spawns (encouraging spawn campers). Anyone who goes grunt is useless, completly useless, in the ammount of time it takes to deploy a MG a sniper can come along and kill you ten times over.

Yeah I understand the "realism" of it all, but this isnt real life, its a game. And its a sniperfest.

I'm a fan of 1.3b all the way. I have never said that any new patch is better than 1.3b, and I've always hoped the developers would return to that style of gameplay. Finding servers running that have been difficult, due to a lack of players who actually want to play an older version.

You can see my review on my website, but I'll post it here.

I can safely say that Day of Defeat 1.0 is everything I feared it would be. It's Counter-Strike: Condition World War Two. Most (if not all) of the things I said would be wrong with the game came to pass. I've been searching for something new to the game that was worthwhile - it's been difficult to find anything. The graphics look better now - in fact, they are sometimes on par with Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. In fact, it's so much like Medal of Honor that it often plays like it too. In the time I played, the game no longer had the slower pace that was well liked among the gamers. Now it has a more arcade like gameplay style, reminiscent of Medal of Honor or Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
There are a few new graphical tweaks that are worth mentioning. There is now a overly stupid pop up help guide (which I promptly removed). The crosshairs now widen whenever one moves (which I promptly disabled). There are some rain effects that use the new particle system. They look the same as the sprites used earlier, but no longer have the bugs that accompany sprites (except in the fog). Guns now have muzzle flashes! However, the muzzle flash can be seen through walls, ruining the effect. Teammates now have a small icon denoting their affiliation, making it easier to distinguish team members in crowds. I removed this feature as well, since I thought it detracted from the whole teamwork issue of coordinating efforts. It seemed more on the par of (surprise!) Medal of Honor's gameplay, not the old Day of Defeat.
Player and weapon models have been updated in this game, but I hesitate to say they're better. Player models look much more detailed and lifelike, but their animations leave something to be desired. Weapon models range from adequate to downright ugly. The Thompson is one of the latter cases: it appeared to have been assembled out of LEGO blocks.
And don't even get me started on the new website for Day of Defeat. The thing looks like the army is off for a trip in an African safari adventure, not war. Who decided the Jurassic Park font would be a good idea for the main title? Why?!
Overall, I wasn't very pleased with this release. I wasn't surprised, either: I was dreading this new version and what it would do to the Day of Defeat community. I'm glad I decided to leave the sinking ship and move to Natural Selection. I'm having a hard time not saying "I told you so."

Everyone needs to boycott this aweful game.
The DoD team made it playable, the Valve team made it marketable.
You also get those beta-testing lap-dogs who will say anything for a chance to test for valve!
I'm going to give this game one update before I discard it forever.

I really liked 3.1

However I can safetly say 4.0 is far more enjoyable. Much much more.

It feels more like a war than it ever did and it is much better than it was.

The only thing it's missing? dod_overlord

But then again I haven't tried Charlie yet!

played it again today, had a little fun. I played on a server where I wasn't pinging in the 100s, had a few good people on the team, but the runstrafing brits will win the game EVERY time. Regardless of how you play it, it is impossible to get a good runstrafer before they get you, even if there are 4 of you (unless you're all machinegunners).

it's cute, the minimap helps, but detracts from the whole game experience that was DoD.. Oh, and the minimap doesn't seem to help much. And as for the icons, I am getting used to shooting the guys without icons over their head, but that doesn't feel "right" to me.

I'd give it a C (minus), instead of an F.
