Now, Josiah Bartlet, no offence. But no one gives a ****. I mean have 49 Start on the Flag, no one cares. If you're really going to get mad at it, look for a Model Replacement.

Actually people do give a monkeys as it has been reported on the DOD forum by someone else before I did.

If the American flag was put upside down there would have been outrage so please don't mock my point because no-one "gives a ***" because it is obvious people do.

The whole flag issue:

As many people have stated how easy it would be to find a British flag, and seeing how the DoD team isn't exactly stupid (as they made quite a good mod) it only stands to reason that it was INTENTIONAL.

In the past they've done some really REALLY boneheaded things tough. Like having a cvar that took of recoil? Yeah, that was really intellegent...

Actually, that's a good programming practice to make everything modular, programmable, testable, etc.

You might say it's the boneheaded players that cause them to have to think of these things...

Yes, but they left it in the public version. I'm saying that they should have taken that option out of the public release.
• Josiah_BartletJosiah_Bartlet Join Date: 2002-07-04 Member: 880Members, Constellation
The only reason why I could possibly think that they made the flag incorrect on purpose was because they don't think that Northern Ireland should be part of the United Kingdom.

If someone has some other reasons why I would like to hear them.

I don't know why so many people are complaining. I've been playing since before they added machine guns (I don't remember the versions, that was pre-2.0, right?) and I love the new DoD. The graphics and maps are much better and look much more polished. I also LOVE the minimap...I think it *enhances* teamplay because you actually have a clue where your teammates are, instead of them all running off in seperate directions and being left in the dust. Plus, the large map is very useful for maps you haven't played before, it at least gives you an idea of where to go and where the chokepoints are. Granted, I don't like the ability of seeing enemy grenades, but in relation to the improvements I think that's minor. The only major complaint I have is the server performance/lag. Everything else seems great. Great job DoD team!

Welp I've been playing DOD since the days of the mounted MGs (the lame ones that were up on walls in some maps). I've always loved the game, some of the chnages have been good other have been bad. Here is my review of 1.0:

The positives:
Great improvement to the visual quality of the game, the map design has also improved. The ability to pick up and drop weapons is very good. The sniper is once again a playable charachter because he can WALK (not run) while peering through his scope ( he is still not 100% acurate, meaning if you are moving and you fire, the round doesnt hit where the cross hairs intercet) The british are a nice addition with new weapons, and several maps once again have interactive spots (mortars, guns, etc) The visual effects and sound effects of bullets hitting walls and flying by you are simply incredible (specially for HL) Pices of wall a mortar/brick chip away. Grenades detonating in water look amazing, and they no longer cause small nuclear explosions in tunnels and small spaces.

the nuetrals:
Since most of this stuff is server options I've desided not to call it negative.
The radar reveales enemy grenades, if those grenades are "seen" (are in LOS) by friendly units. The map also shows frendly/enemy positions, so you no longer have anxioty attacks when hearing footsteps, you can simply glance and see if any freindlies are walking around. The lame arse "autohelp" (heheh only cause I was too lazy to check the console command to disable it) The biggest annoyance in this category is seeing who killed you and from where, absolutley positivley

The negatives:
Ohh boy... well here goes.
The weapon recovery time after going prone (how long it takes you to lift your weapon when you drop to the ground) is simply too long, it almost seems like a guy is taking a nap. The large/small crosshair system need major improvement, since the crosshair is Ither TOTALLY inaccurate, or TOTALLY accurate, no inbetween. Sometimes while you are in a gunfight and you die, the last few rounds you fire dont count as damage ( so even thougha puff of blood appears on the enemy, he still has 100 health wehn you die) And my absolute biggest complaint is the nerfing of the MG42. I've been a big fan of the german army for a long time, the MG42 was the backbone of the blitzkreig, it was a super accurate super deadly beast with an effective accurate killing range of 500-800 meters. and a "target" effect as far as 1200 meters (means you can spray and pray for almost a mile) Now to the beef of the matter, I'll use dod_anzio as an example, there as abalcony above the AXIS flag 2, the balcony overlooks the courtyard and the entrance to the church. The balcony is the best MG map in the game, it defends the middle 2 man flag and prevents the allied flank through the church. In 3.1 you could effectivley kill people dashing for the church (if you were a good MG you could kill them in the open area before the entrance, if you were sloppy you could kill them through the slab, and if you were REALLY bad you could kill them in the entrance of the church sometimes) Just to give you an Idea I could easily have a 20/0 run on the balcony picking off allies that try and flank, I did the same thing in 1.0 and guess what, I only scored 3 kills in 30 minutes on that balcony, the MG42 is a staple gun now, and there is absolutley no excuse for it. It was supposed tgo be an overwhelming weapon, and it was never intended to be a scatter stick. I can post pictures of Mg42 with scopemounts that had recorded kills at a distance of 1400 meters. I hope that they will increase the weapons accuracy a tad, if they wanted to tone it down the should have made it overheat faster. there is o excuse for that kind of travesty, that alone makes me question my longevity with DOD. Especially since NS has totally spoiled my sense of teamwork, I find myself having an anurism because DOD players dont understand the concept of WAITING at a 2 man flag for the capture before running off to score a kill...... seriously the cooperation in NS makes DOD seem like a single player game.

Ok, I've posted in this topic a few times b/c I hate seeing ppl **** when they don't know the facts. I'll try to stay civil since this has become somewhat of a mantra for me. They Haven't Changed A Single Element Of Weapon Accuracy Except The Bars Recoil, there I've said it again and so everyone shuts up about the weapons here's a link you should all look at.

The official post from the DoD team was not entirely correct.

The MG42 now fires one bullet per shot instead of two. That means you have to fire at a target twice as long until you hit it. The actual "accuracy" (i.e. the fire cone/random spread) was changed neither for the MG42 nor the BAR, but only for the unscoped Sniper.

IMHO this ROF nerf makes the MG42 quite pointless. It's now an inaccurate MG34 that overheats. But since it still ejects 2 bullet cases per shot and the nerf was not listed in the "official" change list, there is a slim chance that it was an oversight that will be corrected in a new version.

I havent been a big DOD player, but I gave it a shot (Last year I think)

and it was a BLAST... Felt like war, looked like war, and sounded like war.

I gave this new version a shot today, and I got bored pretty quick. It felt like CS, still looked like war, and sounded like all the weapons had the same kind of ammo/barrel

I give it one star out of three, why? because they took 2/3 of the game away

I have since deleted Day of Defeat from my computer. It wasn't worth the space on my hard drive. I deleted Counter-Strike long ago, but I was tricked into downloading it again, this time from www.dayofdefeatmod.com. I won't make that mistake again.

I'm afraid that this thread could be locked soon. I thought we weren't supposed to flame... (looks pointedly at Lindstrom).

I still prefer 1.3b. I played Day of Defeat before then, but I thought it was at its finest at that time. I became rather bored with the newer versions. I always hoped that the next patch would feature the fun gameplay of 1.3b, but that hasn't happened yet.

Natural Selection owns Day of Defeat. The teamwork required to win a game of Natural Selection is far greater than Day of Defeat.

I'm playing more DoD than Natural Selection at the moment!

Why?

Because Natural Selection has gone stale. It's all about the rushing now. I much rather liked the whole idea of "I wonder how this will work?" That the older versions of the game. It's as if JP/HMG and D/M/S has become embraided on the foreheads of many players.

There have been countless times where the commander has stuck to a tactic he knows will work only to be confronted by a hive that seems too defended to do anything with. It's almost like he overlooks the other option that the protolab gives him which is perfect for that job. It's things like this that make me scream. that and when I join a server and try to go comm and try experimenting I get crys of "0MG!!! n00b!" Either that or if I'm a normal marine my calls for a Shotgun of HA get unheeded.

Personally I'm taking a break from 1.04 until 1.1 comes out.

gee, reading all the complaints I thought the mod became utter crap ...but then I tried it out and SURPRISE! SURPRISE! I liked it! a lot! still do ..and I have been playing since 1.3 aswell ...and I still remember how people have been complaining about the MGs killing off the fast pace of the game dominating it and now they complain about the nerfed MG-42...
I for one think the mod got a lot more balanced, which is a good thing and which is why I like this version the most.

you, sir, have been playing too much on the same server. I regularly go play on servers where sensory first (cloaking) or movement (celery/silence) is as frequent as defence. On the marine side, we try all kinds of stuff. For example, Jetpack+welders, sieges in sneaky spots (think top of Refinery) and other unusual tactics. We also go from time to time the dreaded hive lockdown (I personally hate it) but ever so rarely go JP rushing.

Now your reaction is probably going to be WHAT NOOB THEY NEVER USE D/M/S OR JP+HMG? well, that is the whole POINT.

Back to DoD: is it just me, or has the community gone down to a CS level of stupidity? If so, is it possibly related to its availability in the commerce? (is it already?)

I'd love to join a server with that type of atmosphere.

I tend to go to Blueyonder, Roobubba or Bacterial Gridlock as a group. But really for me as a player NS has still got too predictable even with the unusual tactics.

My reaction is not "0MG! Th3y 4r3 n00bs!!" I would love to see that more often. But unless you can regularly get on servers with people willing to experiment theres no point. Recently NS has felt more like a chore than fun.

There are some mind blowing games and there are those 5 min ones that are no fun at all. Added to that prolonging the game for no reason (Spawn Camping etc) I'd rather have a game thats more consistant in how much fun I have (DoD) rather than one that can be a mixture or heartpoundingly good games or complete pants ones.

NS is a good game and all I just want a little more flexibility in the games I play. (Oh and Oni at one hive )

DOD is so cool.

I had great games where our team worked all together for objectives (minimap helps). The game is very balanced and I love so much those one-shot-kill-carbines. The graphics are just awesome and the overall gameplay improved.

The things I don't like is that you can run around like a little skulk with scoped sniper and the fps going down when you die.

Another thing I noticed is that usually games aren't fun if you keep complaining about ABC or XYZ. Just play !!!

edit: I think nerfed MG-42's are much better now (wasting less ammo)

Natural Selection stale? Perhaps. But it really depends on the people with whom you play. Just last night I played commander and started experimenting. We lost, but it was fun trying new things out.

Thanks for all the support on the mg-42 gripe I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed it.

I realized a few other things as well that add to the negative aspects of the game

You no longer score points for "holding ground" you used to get points per tick based on how many flags you had (so if you had 4 and they had 3 you would score 4 points a tick and they would get 3) made the game have a war feel "controll ground" now you only score per flag cap and map cap, just seems like it lacks somethig
