@ATF i had a similar idea the other day, imagining it somewhat like the PSO lobby system. More than anything I was thinking of it as a place for inter-server socialising rather than matchmaking
I like it. Let's not hold back and replace improve/advance the main menu with this. It currently already loads a bunch of assets and the rendering engine so why stop there.
You'd make it connect to that server in the background.
Structure it like a club, one main room for general whatever people want to do, a room for competetive discussion, another for gathers/pugs. There'd be one for ridiculous strategies, too. Possibly a server ops corner.. any thing really.
Random Joe would then be able to 'just walk in' for example the competetive scene to learn about it and have a go at it.

I kind of like this idea. Would need proper directional audio with distance falloff. Some sort of group server vote function by room where those who voted get sent to the most voted server to pub or pug.
Making the Protoss for NS2 was a thought experiment for me. Basic thing is Protoss has a shield bar on top of normal health bar. Shield takes 1 damage from everything, heavy to light. Recharges fast after not taking damage.
Buildings require a Pylon. A Pylon starts with 20 energy. Can be upgraded to give 40 energy at max upgrade. Buildings can be built normally, but require a Pylon for power to work. Larger upgrade buildings require 30-40 power to function. Shield Battery will be core for defending the base and whatnot. Pylon can be turned onto be a spawning Pylon. Enables spawning on the field but the Pylons are much weaker.
Base lifeform is the Zealot clone thing. It has a melee that deals about 35 normal damage twice every .4 seconds or so. Second weapon is a plasma rife. Deals like ~20 normal damage every ~.25 seconds. Fires a bit like the Plasma Rifle thing in Halo. 100 health and ~125 shield.
Passive ability is that anything he is looking at, he takes half damage from it. Mostly designed to fight the Marines. Unlockable ability is charge. Gains +5 speed and charges forwards for 1.5 seconds and takes 25% of normal damage during it. One of the later game abilities is Shield Recharge. Gains +40 shield regen till shields are at full. Then two seconds later, the shield goes down for 10 seconds.
Mid form lifeforms are Dark Templar and some dude with power armor. Dark Templar gains a sniper rifle that doesn't give any targeting location stuff. Then Scythe blade. Invisible and stuff as well. Power armor dude is the most ranged class.
Max level form is Archon. Deals like 100 normal damage in a five meter radius seven meters away from where he is looking. Damage falls off. Can fire a slow moving plasma ball that deals like 80 building damage. Not really used for anything but the basic of auto-attacks at range. 1k shields and 50 health. Can easily be killed by spamming ranged abilities or an Onos just taking him on.

Could work on more but meh.
This sounds alot like Starcraft and Warhammer lol, Warcraft?...... Starhammer )
Remove Alien commander and let gorges do the building.
Make Marine commander buy everything for the team again.
Marines get PRES only through kills, all RT income goes to the TRES pool.
Take over the matchmaking and ranking system from the SEK2000 server (one of the few servers in EU that is full) into the game.
Remove Alien commander and let gorges do the building.
Make Marine commander buy everything for the team again.
.
Ahhh yeah NS sounds so much better when there are 1000x the opportunities to troll entire teams
And extra duties on top of an already mentally exhausting role that nobody really likes doing.
@Flaterectomy: More weapons. Obviously, marines would start at 0 PRES and if a marine gets lets say 5 skulk kills he/she can buy a shotgun.
@meatmachine: I'm not here to vindicate my oppinion on what I think is best for NS, especially not against people who have no idea what they are talking about.

Hello counter natural strike selection.
Personally, I wouldn't like to see a natural selection 3.
Not at least, until the NS2 community starts to ACTUALLY GENUINELY DIE OUT. (much to the dismay of doomsayers everywhere, it is growing)
Maybe something similar, or in the same universe, though. I wouldn't mind a Squad oriented game (like seriously squad oriented) Co-op game where You go around exterminating khaara hives, or something.
Maybe something like what we were expecting from cololnial marines?

Sounds like pure trolling to me. If it is not I finally understand why my pub experience (especially on the SEK2000 servers) became worse and worse ^^
@bERt0r Why fanboying? I actually don't play NS2 anymore... And what makes you think I do not know what I am missing? I played NS1 and liked it. I am not all against removing alien comm for example but the "Take over the matchmaking and ranking system from the SEK2000 server (one of the few servers in EU that is full) into the game." just completely disqualified you from a serious discussion for me. If you do not know why read my posts about the SEK2000 mods in this forum...
This is going offtopic, so if you want to discuss this further pm me. The point about that system is that with greater skill, you have to bear greater responsibility. The good thing about it is that it enables making even teams when a round starts. I can say for sure that it worked out great in NS1 since it was one of the few servers constantly populated even when NS1 classic was dying. In NS2, it is still one of 4 servers in EU that is full whenever I look for a game (probably EU peak hours).
I can understand that you got pissed off because you got punished because of a system you dont understand. But I think that the SEK2000 system at least does a great job at judging a players skill. Not only as a shot but also as a teamplayer. I don't know how it works internally, I can just tell from my limited experience that it produces even games compared to the stomps you see on most servers.

I don't know what you are trying to imply by assuming I do not understand the system. I am pretty sure a system like that works when you have a very narrow distribution of player skills. That is presumably why it works on the SEK2000 servers (where I estimate the skill to be low to mid). What I have experienced is that the system fails as soon you have one or more higher skilled players on the server. But it's not only the systems fault, that in NS2 a lot of times low-high skilled players are playing (or have to play) on the same servers and I can't really think of any system that could account for that while randomizing the teams.
No, it means that for one very high skilled player to play on one team, there has to be an equally high skilled player on the other team to ensure a fair match. That should be a no brainer. If there is only one super high skilled player on the server, it is often still possible to balance out the team strengths by making him play with the weaker half of the players or giving the other team extra players. When you joined SEK, you messed up the balance and got a warning. Stop being butthurt because you were not able to stomp noobs in a stacked game.
Your assumption is also not correct since the SEK2000 server in NS1 was populated by the strongest EU players back in the day. Afaik, Treffnix was one of the regulars there and he was not even the top (at least I can remember his name from there).
Ok ok guys enough now kiss and make up, I'd love it if electrifiable RT's made a nice come back, damn those pesky skulks, mines are too expensive and people too stupid to use handgrenades!

Protoss.
Half-serious ideas for this anyone?

Also dark templars.

Blizzard canceled ghost (which was vaporware anyways) to make their own NS2 because they realized how awesome it is (jk jk)
